: Can I put these tires on my EVO X GSR?
Tekno 12-22-2008, 09:23 PM I know the car is 245/40/18 stock.
I am looking to get snow tires and i found these on craig's list.
Front 225/45R18
Rears 245/45R18
Will they work?
will3ptman 12-22-2008, 09:28 PM 225 is to small for the stock rim

thanks for the reply.
What sizes can will work? just the 245/40/18?
or i can have a range?
I appreciate it.
will3ptman 12-22-2008, 09:38 PM pretty sure you need to stick with 245. and up to 45 for the sidewall
245/45R18 doesn't work safely. It fits but will bang around.
225/45R18's would work if you had snow tires, but not for dd.

a 225 is to narrow it would be stretched on the stock rim. and a 245/45 doesn't have that much higher of a sidewall compared to a stock 245/40
Jackygor 12-22-2008, 10:09 PM whats the goal in these tires? Is it because they are cheap?
will3ptman 12-22-2008, 10:18 PM idk, not me trying to buy them. But I know a 225/40 will not fit a stock rim, and a 245/45/18 will fit, unless you car is dropped ridiculously low,in which case a 245/40/18 would probably rub too anyways.
EVOXCO 12-23-2008, 12:24 AM I run 235/40/18 with no problem.
will3ptman 12-23-2008, 12:31 AM a 235 is bigger than 225. and not as far of a stretch. can I ask what made you go with a 235/40??
Lesterh 12-23-2008, 03:05 AM Won't having two different tire sizes (225 front, 245 rear) destroy your differentials eventually, since the diameter of the tires will be slightly off? I'm certain that I read that somewhere in the manual. Or maybe in my old WRX manual.
jamdread 12-23-2008, 01:55 PM I'd guess that having different sized tires on an AWD car is a bad idea
I misread the part that you are running staggered tires. It won't work at all. :<
Tekno 12-23-2008, 02:54 PM Thanks Guys for all the reply.
Yes, i am trying not to break my pocket, at the same time, i DO NOT want to break my car :confused2:
I found these on Craig's list for someone 20 miles away from me.
Four Michelin Pilot Alpin High Performance Snow Tires for sale.
Size: 245/45 R18
Will that work? :confused2:
jamdread 12-23-2008, 03:03 PM That's slightly bigger than stock but it should still work - your speed will be off though
For winter the narrower the tire the better. On the forums you will see people running 235 and even 225 width tires. Technically even 215-45-18 will work but I don't know anyone that makes that specific configuration of winter tire.
^Actually that's not stock size.
The 245/45R18's will fit, but they will rub when you have either a full car, in steering full-lock, or going over bumps. It is not ideal.
Go with 245/40R18, try not to compromise on tire size.
Scooter 12-23-2008, 04:41 PM I would check with Tire Rack on most snow tire issues... You don't need to get the tires there, but they seem to do their research on what sizes fit and don't. And for snow a thinner tire should do better (depends on brand and design), but it also needs to be mounted on the correct sized wheel.
And no, I'm not a Florida native. I've lived in NYC, Buffalo and Chicago. Yes I have seen snow. (Sorry, just trying to avoid getting flamed.)

i'm guessing you mean a narrowor tire? not thinner (sidewall). But narrower is going to require a second set of rims.

Correct. It will let the tire "dig into" the snow a little better. Rally cars use tires narrower than stock to let the tire dig into the dirt. Same concept. Snow tires are a compromise because even when it snows you won't be driving on snow 100% of the time, so snow tires are made in stock size so you can do both. Drive on asphalt, concrete or snow. But if you know you are going to be driving on snow almost 100% of the time you can go narrower.
And yes a narrower tire will require narrower wheels. Another reason snow tires come in stock sizes.

I will back this up as well.. Installed 245/45/18 michelins on my brand new evo and immediately noticed full steering lock rubbing on the front air dam vents. Exchanged out the michelin alpin pa2's for dunlop m3's in 245/40 and love them. traction is amazing and the dry road ride and handling doesnt seem to suffer much except for a little more body roll it seems. (soft tire)
