Would the Mitsu Evo X MR be a good choice for a first car ?

P.S. I 'd have to wait until I win A big lottery before I can buy a car.

2) Then why are you asking?

To your question "no". To your comment, make that a "hell no".

Of course there are exceptions, but it's usually safe to use the assumption everyone will wreck a first car.

good to know..

I bought a 91 hatch, built b16, all motor ran a 12.5 - sold

92 hatch b20 turbo - sold

95 coupe single slammer - sold

06 wrx stage 2 - traded for..

06 sti built and TOTALED.

took me 4 cars before i even got in a single accident, and the whole time i had a tunner car i was soem sort of pickup truck. i had a s10 and a nissan hardbody, never been in any accidents till my 06 sti.. hit a wall coming off a onramp last summer. Insurance paid for and and i got a evo X. so not every wrecks the 1st car.

but you should still start off with either a lancer or a civic. not a evo

Hmm... I was a pretty decent driver at 15, when I got my license, but had a few beginners mistakes. For instance, curbing wheels & clipping a couple curbs, as well as backing up into a trash can (lol). Parking in a high school parking lot was bad w/a semi-nice car, which I had. People, especially many high school students get jealous easily & for that reason I had my car spit on & a deep gouge in my bumper. Needless to say, you wouldn't want that to happen to a $40k car... I was pissed when it happened to my $12k car. I also would speed a lot, which could have been deadly in an Evo. So basically what I'm saying is that getting an Evo at 16 or so would be a bad idea for many young drivers & would have been for myself as well, even though I really really wanted one at the time. It's also a lot costlier for upkeep. Just work your way up to one & maybe get one in a couple years

Well.. I'm 17 years old right now and i've had my liscense for over a year, and im in LOVE with the evo. I find myself talking about cars and the evo constantly at school, to the point where it drives everyone crazy lol, and right now i have the choice of getting a car for college since i have to commute back and forth next year. I talked to my dad about getting the evo and he sounds up for it, but I don't know if its the right choice, especially with keeping up with the maintence and lack of mitsubishi quality, as i've read on the forum lol. The evo is an amazing car, but I dont know if i want to get it right now and have to worry about my dad paying everything for me when i get just take one of the cars here at home, and i just wanted to make a comparison at what age you got your evo, or any car performance car in that price range, to see when's the right time.

joshesevo22
01-23-2009, 02:28 AM
^ yea my dad was all up for it to then had to convince my mom for about a month to let me buy it.... Its pretty easy to pay for if you have a decent job, 390 a month for me and i still have money for my girlfriend movies etc BARLY...... BUT i wouldnt recomend it as a 1st car as i stated the reason earlier in this thread :D

Not too sure if the Evo should be your first car...Not doubting your "skills", but the car needs extensive care, and attention. Again, its a high performance car, you need to do many things that you wouldn't conventionally do for an "average" car.

@ strat: Just go w/ what works in your situation. I'm 20 right now & got my MR just under 1 month before my birthday, which took a lot of saving for & is making my budget very lean, especially since there are so many items that I'm wanting to buy for it. If you &/or your family can afford it & you are a responsible driver & your parents know so as well, then do it. All I'm saying is that the first couple years, people tend to screw up & aren't impeccable drivers. The more time you have behind the wheel before getting a quick car, the better.

As far as Mitsubishi's quality, they're no BMW or Audi (even they have their short comings), but they're no 90's Hyundai either. Previous to my X, I had an '03 Lancer OZ Rally, which is a large downgrade in quality, but was by no means a POS. It lasted me about 5 years w/o anything other than regular maintenance needed. My BF loved my lancer so much, he bought his own. There's no big gripes from me on Mitsu's quality.

IMO opinion if this is your first car get something that you can bang up some especially if you are still in high school. Even if you do not wreck it someone will. Several of my friends with nice cars in high school got keyed, backed into, rear ended, etc. Get a beater Volvo 240 Dl. Let people tear it up then get you a nice car in college.

If some 1 doesn't know alot about cars maintence etc yea they shouldnt own a performance car :). I grew up around racing since i was about 6 motocross and up to helping my dad rebuild the 98 cobra we had, and still this forum as taught me sooooooooo sooooooooo soooooo much that i didnt know.....

Buy a manual Corolla, last you some good years, good gas mileage, and you can resell in down the road for a good amount and put that money towards an Evo XI, hehe. Plus you will impress your folks with how sensible you are for your age.

People who drive Evo's and Sti's when they are 16 and 17 years old are the reason we all pay a shitload of money in insurance premiums for them. Because young people wreck, get speeding tickets and are generally stupid with cars. No offense to any young folks here, just a fact...I was young once too. In fact, one of these young people slammed into my new Evo last week! While I was sitting at a RED LIGHT!!!!

Of course older people can be stupid too, but there is a reason that your insurance premiums plummet when you turn 25! And insurance only gets cheaper as you get older, because older people don't file as many claims. My insurance was nearly 3K a year for my WRX when I was 23-24. It's $800 a year now that I'm 28. No speeding tickets helps too!

if u wrecked the evo x, insurance rate will go up for us too!
the reasons evo insurance is expensive is because of those idiots driving crazy on roads and crash it.
so please dun make evo ur first car, even if u win a lottery!
unless u are sharing it with me 50/50.

As has been said an old beater is a good first car, manual is best, I wish I had bought a manual first the Evo was my first DD manual car. On top of an old beater buying it yourself is a very good idea, I know I took better care of my first car I bought myself than my brother with his '95 Blazer I bought for him, loaned him money and he ripped my off. He beat it up to the point where I could only sell it to a junk yard to get any money back.

i disagree. I had a 2002 trans am WS6 with an LS1 vette motor in it as my first car and i dont regret it at all. It makes you RESPECT the car and be smart about where you drive. I am not 19 and i have a GG 08 evo X. ALL OF WHICH, were paid for by me. I worked two jobs while in HS. Work hard, and respect what you have and it CAN be done. Hope this helps and with hard work and respect for the car you can drive anything. IMO. Just work hard and buy it yourself. You will have a much better respect for it.

I think it's clear that we've all agreed a beater would be a good first car. So if a Mustang GT is your idea of a beater go for it.

We're only saying this because odds are something will happen to your first car. How do we know this? Threw experience. Hell, I'll admit to it, I had two accidents in my first car. One was only a fender bender and one was a bit more serious. I'm not just talking about accidents either, you will learn some "do's and dont's" in your first car. Weather that be scrapping a curb or parking in a bad spot. There's tons of scenarios. For that, I'm extremely happy my first car was a beater and not an Evo or Mustang GT.

No one is perfect at something when they first start, its human nature. If your learning to ride a bike are you most likely to fall off in the first few weeks, or after a year?

We're not saying you have to drive this car forever, but at least start with something that can be easily replaced. Get the idea? To each his own though, that's just my two cents. You do whatever you feel is right. :)

1986 Volvo 240 DL......my first car. Young drivers need cars that aren't rocket ships, are difficult to kill yourself in, and don't attract a lot of police attention. Plus, having a beater as a first car is a right of passage....it builds character. People who get nice cars as first cars turn out to be d*cks.

Get a used Si. There are plenty of mods to buy that will keep you happy for a few years. Buying used is the wisest decision because if you're like me and your income quadruples right after high school then you can just trade it in and buy something new and nice. I bought brand new and I'll be upside down if I trade.
