Just a couple of photos.
Better ones coming next Wednesday when my car club does an Evo 0-10 photoshoot. 7 weeks old.

NZ specs:
No leather. Except for wheel and knob. The rest = Suede and Cloth.
NZ got the performance option 5SpdMT and the STT
18" Lightweight BBS Alloys
Eibach springs
Bilstein Shocks
Black Interior
Lightweight 2 peice disc Bremo brakes (1.3kg lighter per piece over the standard Brembo discs)
No chrome front grill surrounds
High performance tires with stiffer walls and better grip.
Proximity security key.
From what I see its like the MR and the GSR package without satelite nav, full leather and the rockford sound system.
Specs:http://mitsubishimotors.co.nz/vehicles/cars/evolution/specs.asp

Feedback:
You can actually feel the cars systems move the car around under you when youre pushing the car hard, it feels wierd but you can definatley corner hard and fast.
I had a evo 2 before and the X ride is less harsh, I really like it. I'd compare its ride to the latest Audi Rs4. Very livable and comfy.
Heaps of torque low down, feels way more than 206 kws..
The car feels a lot bigger. Inside theres heaps of room. I put my 1Yo in and out and theres heaps of space for all his stuff and his baby seat.
Battery and Water bottle ofcourse relocated to the boot, meaning boot space isnt as deep but its big enough. Absolutlely love the handling. Too bad the factory BBS dont come bigger than 18"'s.
Power on tap and certainly quieter than my previous Evo II. No regrets.

21/11/08:
Mods added:
Modified factory exhaust straight pipe and cat
Modified the factory muffler/rearbox.
HKS hardpiping and the HKS racing suction pipe.. (all have been powercoated black)

Factory intake and cold airbox remain the same.. even the filter!
After some dyno time result:380.5HP/6213rpm 467.2nmtq.

The factory exhaust now has a nice burble to it, gets real throaty at WOT.. I cant believe that those mods and a good tune have produced a monster..

Fuel usage is better, more economical.. the car now sits at 2800rpm at 100kms in 5th, before it was running at 3100rpm.. Power hits from 3000 and carries skyward 6500 then plateaus instead of tapering off.

Next up.
1/4 mile
dyno day to compare results on the same dyno that stock figures were taken on

Future Mods, injectors and fuel pump.
More Pics and audio to come.

all i can say is...hot hot hot, its going to be difficult deciding between white and black.

thank you for that little mini review.

btw, one question. Do the asian markets get Tarmac Black and Phantom Black? At first I thought your X was Phantom but in your sig, it says Tarmac.

I'm in love.

Heaps of torque low down, feels way more than 206 kws..

^This is great news to me. I'm generally unhappy with how 2.0L turbo cars feel low in the RPM range.

Apparently the X is a bit weak up top, near redline. Can you confirm or deny this?

Any chance of you taking a few video clips for us and posting them? I'd love to hear the idle, and hear the exhaust and such.

I don't think NZ and Australia get phantom black, certainly NZ and perhaps JDM get Tarmac (which is actually charcoal/black.. almost black and dare I say it changes colour in different lighting). I had to put my name on the waiting list 1.5 years ago for it. :)

1. Turbo spools at about 2K. TOrque is thick all the way up to 6K.
At 180kms/hr the car still wants to jump forward for more. Im pretty happy with its performance.I think it will run out of gear ratio around 240-250kms I will have to research this. Its actually scary that 400HP should be an easy figure to tune to given its stock performance already. I read somewhere that MMC designed it so you could double its power 'comfortably'. problem = modifying = voiding your 3 year warrenty.

2. I've only gone up to redline once. I didnt notice any issues. Will let you know if I do.

Haha... what about in Singapore? I just committed to pay the equivalent of US$90k+ on my Evo X SST. It's not Mitsu's fault... it's the vehicle taxes. Income tax is much lower in Singapore than in the US, which really makes us better off overall.

Its actually cheaper by about 2K from the Evo 9. :S

2nd hand market here in NZ is awesome.. straight from Japan.. cheaper than most places.. ie a TME Evo 6.5 would go for about 23-25K.

1. I can hear it sucking in air big time from 2K onwards. I think full boost comes at 3.5K-4K but cant be too sure till I get a boost guage or access to the mapping. I'm looking to keep the 'cockpit' reasonably stock so am getting any mods hidden for that 'sleeper' look. I've already started that hidden look for some of the 'devices' I have installed.

2. I also don't know the stock boost level. In my Evo II it was 12psi (until I started modding that). Does anyone know what it is for the Evo X?

Additional little things that improve but add weight to the Evo X:
- Interior very nice and easy to live with. Distinct difference to the earlier evo's. Interior improvements are the same across the new series of lancer) although I would have liked to see the Evo X have slightly different interior to indicate pedigree.
- Recaro seats now have built in airbags.
- Auto lights (off and on depending on lighting conditions)
- Auto rain sensing for wipers
- Battery and Water moved to the boot. (Very cool)
- Auto intercooler spray. (in my old evoII I had to do it manually)
- BlueTooth integration.
Edit:
- Proximity card is very cool. You actually dont need to key to start the car. And it unlocks as you walk beside the car.
Also unlocks the boot. Boot has a button that you press to open. ( will only open if you have the proximity card on you). The card also has an alarm on/off and boot open button.
- The HID lights are awesome and bright. No projector light upgrade required.
- The cornering lights are great. They light up the edges of your road when you turn.

Only complaints:
- I think the wheels could have been bigger or atleast the evo's suspension slightly lower.
- The stock AudioVox sound system sucks. If you have the option to go to the Rockford, then DO SO!! OR you'll be like me and wanting to upgrade sounds ASAP.
- Factory options can be expensive. ( I was given the option to get a Push Start button - cool feature but at $500 - not worth it).

Biggest bonus. The car is very very cool in the looks department so I can just focus on performance :) and perhaps a wheel upgrade.. IMO best option for MMC to ever have 'visually' is to have the BBS factory alloys in 20"'s..

yep definatley get better sounds if you havent got the Rockford Option.
The 6 speaker AudioVox stock system sucks the big one. I bought my wife a brand new 2007 Suzuki Swift LTD and the stock speakers in the Swift has a better sound! More base, more depth and less distortion.

Thats good to hear, now it is a no brainer for me to get the technology package!

edit: I am glad to hear that the interior has gotten a lot more livable! It actually has a lot of gadgets too! Your car must turn a lot of heads!

Oh ya, what are your thoughts about the sound of the exhaust? When you turn on the engine does it the "VROOMMM!" thing loudly? Oh and the engine sound too!

So far, all we know that 4B11T has a higher compression than the 4G63, and 4B11T runs a smaller turbo than the 4G63.

Hey on2it, 1 question. Whats the price for adding the tech package?

Techpackage/Performance packages comes 'standard' in NZ. The NZ has gotten a 'quirky' package. You can then build on that using the optional extras.

As far as I'm aware, the NZ standard packages is Performance GSR + MR package minus the Rockford sound system, the leather, the chrome grills, satellite nav.

how the exhaust note?

sorry guys have been veeery busy. I have to do my tax returns this week. doh!
Will get around to posting some stock sounds tomorrow or Thursday.

Question on sound deadening. Sounds pretty muffled inside so I'd say pretty good. The lack of sound also lends to the feeling of stability and stoutness on the road.. if that makes sense.. It should also lend to making the premium rockford sound system sound even better.. if you had that option :(

One other thing. The gear is notchy, nice and smooth if you get it right.. real notchy if you dont.. especially in and out of first gear.. or into reverse.. could be just mine.. other owners should confirm.

Another thing. My evoX has got these nifty little buttons on the door handles which you can either press to open or lock and alarm. So as long as the car senses the proximty card the buttons work.. MMC are thinking of the little stuff. handy when your hands are fully or you cant be bothered looking through your pockets for the proximity card.

Perhaps a different trans fluid could help? I've had good luck with redline fluids.

No audio controls on steering wheel.
No blue tooth controls on steering wheel.
Only thing on steering wheel is the road surface selecter. ( snow, gravel, tarmac)

1. MMC will definatley fix the SST issues. But I guess if your thinking heaps of aftermarket mods, Im not too sure how much more power you would be able to put through.

2. Yeh mine has the reputation of being the first road registered in NZ which makes it the first road registered in the world outside JDM.
I guess I paid and waited 1.5 years on the waiting list for that kudos as well.

on2it - Is the fuel economy really 16/22mpg? What are you averaging? What octane do you run?

I'm averaging better than I thought and I haven't been conservative.
18.8mpg for city driving with some motorway driving thrown in.
Will do some long motorway driving this weekend or next weekend to get a good indicator of mpg for cruising.

I'm using 98Octane. We don't have the 100Octane JDM has. Could always use octane boosters I suppose but not that fussed.

Also, you are using 98 RON over there right? To us Americans that is 93 Octane Pump gas, we use a different PON rating system for our fuel.

Imagine how bad our (Australian) 92 octane fuel is then.......however it suits most cars here, no problems at all - I've used it in my LS1 powered HSV R8 and only noticed 'a little' degredation in performance compared with 98 !

We have 92, 95, 98 and 100 octane available at the pump here :)

To run your car on continously on 100 though, at an average of $1.60 p/ltr you'd have to sell one of your kidneys :uzi:

While I never bothered with octane boosters (since at best they would bring you up a few tenths of a point), I'm curious to hear an explanation on why it makes things worse.

Also, you are using 98 RON over there right? To us Americans that is 93 Octane Pump gas, we use a different PON rating system for our fuel.

Is that a fact? So their 98 is our 93? Odd, never heard that before.

FLK
12-18-2007, 06:37 PM
^Their 98RON is our 94 Octane. It's an average of the MON and RON ratings. Found this out while I lived in the caribbeans, which uses the euro RON. Check this explanation (http://www.btinternet.com/%7Emadmole/Reference/RONMONPON.html).

I believe either episode 3 or 4 of Top gear this season ran a hardcore test with scientific equipment and crank dynos with various octane boosters and found it degraded performance. If you check on their website you can find which episode it was in.

After watching that I stopped putting in higher octane than what my cars are rated at. It's basically a waste of money since the engine isn't tuned for it :)

:) I assume you will install a vent to atmosphere BOV. I had one in my Evo 2. It was loud but I dont know if it was benificial. I'm keeping my X stock so no shrieking noises roaring down the street. There have been many debates about BOVs that actually vent externally and whether or not they are better than plumb back BOVs.

The benificial point in letting the BOV vent into the atmosphere is to release the hot air that has already passed the compressor into the atmosphere. If you let it go back into the intake, you will be recirculating hot air instead of intaking cooler fresh air. In conditions where your turbine is glowing red hot it may be benificial but under normal conditions, it probably doesn't do much.

Cool, yes but in the meantime. plumb backs vents back to the intake system and accounts for the air initially measured in the intake when it sets air/fuel ratios between gear changes.

I guess At it's worst with a Vent to air BOV, your car will temporarily run rich between gear shifts ( which my evo 2 did) and could even hesitate or stall. I guess for the X and more recent performance vehicles this is not a significant issue (ie most people never even notice anything). The X then would run very very rich, since its already running rich :)

Are you planning a Vent to Air BOV SIC? i might consider a Hybrid but haven't thought that far.

I guess it will reduce turbo back pressure and aid throttle response.

You won't run rich in between shifts if you run the BOV before the MAF.

Hey on2it what brand laser jammer and radar detector are you using? Are they hard to install? Do you have any pics from the install?

on2it
05-08-2008, 04:57 AM
Bel Sti-R and Target LT400 - This is smoking hot. Better than the blinder and other Target systems. I've seen a few laser gun operaters jam then check their guns before drawing a bead..

It was sold to me as a garage door opener.. thats the only way they are legal. It is classed as a garage door opener with the 'unfortunate effect' of jamming laser signals.. "but not to worry, as soon as it detects that it might be jamming signals .. it switches itself off after 5 secs."

Do a google on LT400 to see how easy it is to install.

I had this installed by my dealer and covered by dealer warrentee. bloody expensive but worth every penny.

note i do not condone speeding above the legal speed limit.. just unjustified and lazy entrapment. here in NZ there has been an 'unofficial' police quota.. where the police have to ticket "x" amount of ticket.. read into that what you will. ;)

UnctrldRage
05-08-2008, 05:04 AM
That unofficial police quota exists everywhere thats why cops like to go to car meets (where cars are off) and charge people with street racing.

Hey On2it, Just picked up a silver E10 sst on Wednesday. So that's one more on the shore.
There don't seem to be many 10's on the road here yet.

Welcome!
yeh not too many evo X's in NZ, only a handful 5spd GSR's came in on the first shipment in Oct 07, and the first bunch SST's came in on March.

I hope your dealer gave you all the options you could get! we are a little spoilt in NZ with all the awesome JDM options..

I have only seen 2 other evo X's on the road, and I do know of the FQ330 one down in Napier.

I have not seen silver one yet, although the Napier one is silver. And ofcourse fellow forummember DREX is based further down the northisland.

Congrats on your purchase mate. make sure you post in the NZ/Aust section of the site. :)

Just doing intake, exhaust (if I can find one the right noise level) and get ecu tuned.
It's got the performance package, paint package, proxy key, rain sensor etc.. and Rays Eng wheels
It's a new Import, all the sst's in July’s shipment are pre sold, and they were trying to steal my E9. So I saved a lot and got a new import now!

I traded the E9 on it down in Dunedin but swapped it up in Nelson last Tuesday. So I drove the 9 down over night swapped cars and drove 10 back the next morning so it was a great comparison.
10’s are better all around mostly, on the open roads its great but a bitch in the drive though and confined spaces. They seem to use the same gas too.
If anyone else is having trouble making the decision go the 10 it’s worth it.

All come packaged for $2k - "sight sound and spoiler package"
