: Mobile Phone OS Shootout
Kooldino 03-19-2009, 09:26 PM With iPhone OS 3.0 ready to debut, this article is worth a read.

Personally, I'm considering an Android phone for my next phone (I use a Palm Treo 700p now).
With the Android Phones - are they easy to tether? Also, can I import my contacts and calendar in from my treo easily?
Get the iphone yo, I was anti-iphone, till I got one. Now i'm crazy about it cuz it just owns everything out there.
Kooldino 03-19-2009, 09:46 PM The iPhone has it's merits, for sure, but for me - no hard keyboard, no care.
TheSin 03-19-2009, 10:29 PM see and I'm the other way, hard KB and I stay far away :D Each to his own ;)
Katya4me 03-19-2009, 10:39 PM On the tethering question, it used to be open to rooted phones only, but I saw this today: http://www.junefabrics.com/android/
As to transferring contacts, if you can save them to a .csv file, you can easily import them. In the meantime, I'm continuing to look for import methods that are for the Palm OS.
It looks ugly, but I found this: http://www.io.com/~duanev/computers/android/palm_import.html

Oskinosmee 03-19-2009, 10:41 PM I love blackberry!
I had a G1 and it sucked bad
XxLaNcErGTSxX 03-19-2009, 10:51 PM iPhone FTW
xPRimNT 03-19-2009, 11:11 PM I've been using the iPod Touch for some time, and have found the available applications indispensable for my studies.
Then, when my previous phone was up for renewal, I had planned on getting a BB Bold. I quickly realized that it was the same price as the iPhone, and the BB didn't have the wealth of programs available. I jumped ship and grabbed the iPhone. I couldn't be happier.
The functionality provided by jailbreaking the iPhone is insane. Full access to the filesystem, terminal access which includes SSH (great for administrating my home server) and others, VPN, Remote Desktop, etc. However, I use my iPhone more than another phone because it is jailbroken: the same amount of functionality is not available normally.
hotroddude 03-19-2009, 11:31 PM Take a look at the Openmoko Neo Freerunner. It's Linux based and it will run several operating systems that are optimized for phone use (including Android), or for computing (including Debian). I've had mine since christmas and absolutely love it, I've never had so much fun with a phone before :) Their wiki-page is just www.openmoko.org
PS: I used to own an iPhone, I hated it.
Kooldino 03-19-2009, 11:50 PM Wow, quite a bit of info here.
@ Oskinosmee (http://www.evoxforums.com/forums/member.php?u=3984) - What didn't you like about your G1?
@ Katya - How's the battery life on your G1? As for the export, I can probably export it to csv. And w00t@the tethering program. I'd like to be able to do it via bluetooth, but I can deal with plugging it in.
Katya4me 03-19-2009, 11:58 PM Battery life w/ the stock battery sucks. I pretty much plug it in every day and that is with no Bluetooth and minimal GPS usage. On the upside, you can get larger aftermarket batteries for it and it will charge off of anything w/ a mini-USB plug. :)
Oskinosmee 03-20-2009, 12:45 AM The battery sucks, text get stuck, poor camera, apps are cool tho, poor email, gps is weak
olsookie 03-20-2009, 12:52 AM i have the iphone 3.0 software on my phone, things are going to be great once they get this released. mms txt doesn't work still, i don't think att enabled it yet. but other than that all the new features make the phone that much better.
i was blackberry bold gung ho and then my work bought me an iphone as a little surprise and i must say, it blows every blackberry/treo/smartphone away. i have experience w/ a lot of phones, i'm a messaging admin at my company. the only phone i'd like to check out is the andriod.

are the bigger batteries clunky and/or expensive? What's the battery life with those like?
Kooldino 03-20-2009, 01:27 AM The battery sucks, text get stuck, poor camera, apps are cool tho, poor email, gps is weak
What's not good about the email?
What do you mean by text getting stuck?
Katya4me 03-20-2009, 02:00 AM are the bigger batteries clunky and/or expensive? What's the battery life with those like?
1 step up still fits under the stock cover, the next one up from that requires a replacement back, but you get about 2-3 times the current battery life. Costs can run from $15 up to $75 depending on the battery and where you buy it from.
I have no problems w/ text or email, GPS can sometimes be weird, but I do fine w/ just the towers 90% of the time.
Oskinosmee 03-20-2009, 02:23 AM text option gets stuck quite often. I like my emails straight to my phone as i sell alot of things, the g1 doesnt do it. I now use a blackberry storm with my tmobile service
Kooldino 03-20-2009, 03:09 AM 1 step up still fits under the stock cover,
How long is the battery life on the stocker? How long on one step up?
the next one up from that requires a replacement back, but you get about 2-3 times the current battery life.
Which is how long? How much bigger is it?

Groovy.
TargeT 03-20-2009, 03:55 AM +1 for iphone, i hated apple before I got one (and still do, hahaha) but I love the Iphone, its so versatile.
how can you turn down an in pocket dyno? and the interface is so intuitive compared to all other phones I've had.

I still rock the stock battery and I can get about a day and a half w/ careful management before the phone dies. From what I've read, the aftermarket batteries get you 3-4 days of battery life, maybe more. As I spend 8 hrs. a day sitting at my work computer, I usually just plug it in there and haven't bought another battery yet. Some are also hoping that Cupcake may help, but I'm not counting on that.
Kooldino 03-20-2009, 02:42 PM A day an a half with plugging it in at work, right?
So what if you don't plug it into anything, and you make about 2 hours worth of calls per day?

No, that is assuming a full charge, ie. plugging it in overnight and then carrying it all day.
It should be fine, but I haven't made any calls past 30 min. on it and multiple short calls are fine. I use data a lot more and the 3G sucks the battery a lot more than Edge, but you can turn off 3G if you want as T-Mobile's Edge is quick but I like the 3G. Last month Ii used about 90MB of data and that was w/ regular surfing, navigation, and apps, but no tethering.
Kooldino 03-20-2009, 03:43 PM So you have 3G on all the time?
Do they have unlimited data plans?
Katya4me 03-20-2009, 03:49 PM Yes
Yes
Kooldino 03-24-2009, 03:19 PM So when the hell is Android Cupcake due out in the states?
Katya4me 03-24-2009, 03:54 PM :(

ashams 03-24-2009, 04:08 PM If you stay connected to 3G network, it will suck your battery....G1 has alot of room for growth, it will catch up in abilities very quickly....right now IPHONE is pinnacle of PHONE TECH..........HOWEVER.......I am an IPHONE user, and only use it b/c it was a gift...I had Nokia before...SYMBIAN is the best OS out there, but its not flashy, or for games...It really depends on what you want to use the phone for...flash and cool factor = iphone - productivity ---Nokia S60 Symbian......E72 is a sweet phone..I had the earlier E61 Euro Edition.
Katya4me 06-01-2009, 03:21 PM I has Cupcake!!!!!! :D

Mmmmmm doughnut......
Saiba Samurai 06-01-2009, 05:05 PM I have a first gen iPhone, and I'll probably get the 3.0 The thing for me about the iPhone is industry support. The Android looks like it could be a real competitor, but it's just a little too far behind in the race right now. Sure if it meets all the features of the iPhone you could say phone for phone it's a competitor, but until it out paces the iPhoen it really won't be a competitor. Because right now soooo many things are being developed for integration with the iPhone, think about all the head units, music apps, networking utilities, etc.. that are being developed solely with the iPhone in mind.
I'm sticking with the industry leader until Google starts leading the pack not just catching up. Because even once they catch up, they'll still have a ways to go before they lead.
TheSin 06-01-2009, 05:27 PM I completely agree but if anyone can do it it'll be google I think. Just isn't there yet is all.

Yeah I have complete faith in Google to do it, just not as quickly as they used to do it. :) :googlesign:
Kooldino 06-01-2009, 06:02 PM I has Cupcake!!!!!! :D
Finally. Is it official? How is it?

If people don't support Android (and support the iPhone instead), it's going to make it that much harder to make Android #1.
Katya4me 06-01-2009, 07:15 PM Finally. Is it official? How is it?
Yeah, it was announced on their official forums as an roll-out in batches last month, and mine came thru this morning. I'm swamped at work right now w/ a crap signal in my office, so can't play with it yet. I can tell at a glance that I do have a new boot screen, on-screen keyboard and camcorder. :) I'lll check in more detail later tonight.
