: w5m6a 5 speed gear ratios & you

According to SCC...

1st gear - 2.857
2nd gear - 1.950
3rd gear - 1.444
4th gear - 1.096
5th gear - .761

Final Drive - 4.687

Outer tire diameter with stock 245/40/18 = 25.72" (18" wheels + 3.86" sidewall x 2)

According to this calculator (http://golenengineservice.com/calc/calcrpm.htm), to cruise at 80mph, you will be at about 3700rpm.

I recommend NOT crusing at 80 mph, not very efficient, plus there are few roads you can cruise at 80 mph without getting a ticket. Try 65 mph which puts you at 3,000 rpm and will get you closer to the rated highway efficiency for the Evo X.

There are roads in the US with a 75mph speed limit, so cruising at 80mph is acceptable.

I chose that speed to basically see what the worst case scenario would be on a US highway.

OK. I think the fastest posted limit in Canada is 110 km/h or 68.4 mph. 65 mph will still get you where you are going, though in the Evo X you will get to 65 mph pretty fast! If you want to go 80 mph I'm not stopping you. Especially if you are on the track or strip!

Top speed per gear @ 7000rpm

1st gear 40mph
2nd gear 59mph
3rd gear 79mph
4th gear 104mph
5th gear 150mph

Used this calculator. http://www.apexgarage.com/tech/gear_ratios.shtml

All seems good except for 104mph in 4th...that seems kinda low.

yeah too low somehow sounds like it will be killing the car.
in west tx the speed limit is at 80mph so 90 still wont get you a ticket unless you get an ass cop.

I forgot which magazine I read, but it says that the optimal gear change is at around 6,500 rpm. I'll try to find the magazine again

Motortrend? Evo X vs. STI?

I remember someone mentioning how the driver kept shifting at 6,500 RPM on the evo.

Since it's been said that the power dies off up high, I can believe that.

here in florida its 65mph but i cruise at 80-90, just have to watch out for highway patrol and maybe get one of those radar detectors and install laser jammers on the front of the car

The actual ratios and number of teeth for each gear are:

40/14 = 2.857143
39/20 = 1.950000
39/27 = 1.444444
34/31 = 1.096774
32/42 = 0.761905

Final is 75/16 = 4.687500

Almost all Arizona highways are posted at 75 MPH. Several highways in Texas are 80 or 85.

Illinois is the worst hands down- 55mph limit- I drive at like 80-90 just to keep with the flow of traffic!! Seriously! I've had cruised control set at 100- and been passed by soccer mom minivans, escalades, and hummers. Chicago drivers are the worst!!! And the state patrol? ha- theres way too many miles of road for them to cover- and they are always tied up with accidents and breakdowns

Huh? The maximum speed limit for any road in CA is 70 mph. And I-15 doesn't run between SD and Orange County, I-5 does.

max in FL. Miami. is 65mph. but i like to drive above 90. cops are not big of a problem till now. my problem is the RPM so high all the time. is like im missing that 6th gear it drives me nuts. plus it feel like it need more power in high speeds it takes to long to reach 140 mph. course i dont dont drive tha fast at all time. but I had and RX8 tha reach 140 quicker and a 07 350z that climbed 150 easily. my evo is only fast to 60. I realy miss the brute force of the Z. but yet I love the handling, cornering at 70 is awsome. I'll just love to have a bit more brute force in high speed and be able to drive my x at 90mph at around 3000 RPM is that much to ask? i know the hp can be gaine with some mods but how about this RPM issue what can be done about it? feedback please. thanx in advance.

You can run 5th gear out to ~155-160mph @ 7,000-7,200RPM I wouldn't recommend staying there to long though, because your engine is gonna be giving you the big middle finger.

Missouri is 70MPH but 80MPH is usually acceptable on I-44 and I-70.

You cant really go on that tho.....when you start modding the best shift pts change depending on how your tune is set up.....so the best way to determine your best shift pt is with your dyno sheet for it will be different which each cars esp when it comes to turbos cams etc...

if the 4th gear isn't weak like the 6spd on the previous gen Evo then hell yes.

having the cruising RPM so high on the freeway has brought out all sorts of rattles in my X. it sucks.

So what is the largest size 18 inch tire that we can fit in? That may help a bit, lower the revs?

We have a fix for the 4th gear on the old six speeders too, but thats another story.

The 6 speed we've designed for the Evo X is carved from God's testicles, so it would be more than adequate for the job methinks.

I dont think a 6 speed is really what is needed. Taller gears in the 5 is what I think is needed. 6 speed is just another shift, I'll avoid that at all costs. Our cars in stock trim are the most potent as mentioned under 6500 rpm. I am all for having having taller gears in the 5 speed. That would mean being in that range for a little while longer. I wouldnt have any problem with that.

I kind of miss my cobalts gearing. My 5 speed cobalt SS had gears like this

1st 37 MPH
2nd 70 MPH
3rd 108 MPH
4th 145 MPH
5th 155 MPH

I was able to finish the 1/4 in 3 shifts most of the time. I would usually shift into 4th @ 7000 rpms, but only to not bounce off the limiter.

I ran 4th up all the way once, and it went to 145. The car is electronically governed at 155 (which I had removed through HB Tuners software) and when in 5th at that speed you still had tons of RPM range left.

5th was mostly an overdrive gear.

well ive done 105 and that was right at red lining in 4th gear and then hit 135 in 5 but i didnt have the balls to go faster

So there's an aftermarket 6spd available for the X?!? where can I find this?! Like the other guys said cruising at 80 @ 3700rpms seems a bit rediculous. My old Acura CL-S would be around 2100 rpms @ 80....

Lol it varies here in OH. We have 55, 65 and right over the river is 70 in KY. I usually just follow the flow of traffic, people like to rip it here. Like 80mph in a 55.

I looked down the other day following a couple SUV's and some BMWs and I had cruise control set to 100mph and they were still pulling away from me. I slowed down.

All Wheel Drifter - I had read that article after browsing the net for the FQ400, so I know theres a 6spd out there, however is that available to us everyday Joe-shmo's? The reason I ask is looking to not be at such a high RPM while cruising. If there isn't a 6spd available is there possibly a different 5th gear or final drive?

I think the thing you linked to is wrong. I have never heard of the FQ-400 Evo X having a 6 speed manual.

Great link! I wonder how badly that will effect acceleration at lower speeds & 0-60? I bet 0-60 would actually improve!

Can anyone else agree that driving at high rpms on the freeway as added rattles to their car or it's more of the road and the stiff suspension?

4 of my last cars were 6 speeds and having a 5 now doesn't bother me. It's good having a 5 speed whenever you wanna pass someone you PASS someone without needing to downshift. I wasn't to happy when I drove to Vegas for the first time in my car and I saw how high those rpms are.

Then I came to terms that the car wasn't build to be economical so somehow I just accept it. :)

Technically you are 100% correct, but I used to take the (57-->91-->)15 --> 8fwy to go to El Cajon/Santee area. So, speaking in the sense of OC --> SD, yeah 15 is acceptable phrasing I would say since it's the majority of the trip, as long as the 91 isn't it's usual parkinglot traffic.
