so i bought my evo x maybe a week ago, and all my friends are telling me watch out for the clutch...they said youll start smelling it by 5000 miles. my boys father owns d g motors in lindenhurst n.y. and they have one with 404whp that went thorugh a clutch at 4500 miles...do i have anything to worry about with the stock clutch and car? Also when shifting into second and third i fell a little grind theres only 300 miles on mine.:wtfsign:

mine isnt bad so far but i was hesitant to buy the evo in the first place because i heard that there could be tranny/clutch problems..

First off, welcome.... and don't worry about your tranny doing that, it is normal... it will go away after a couple of thousand miles. The clutch issue is going to depend on who drives the car, their driving style, and what is done to their car. My clutch is holding up fine for the time being, I have 7,000 miles on the car, 2 track days, and about only 10 launches on it too, and 70 less hp then the dg motors X ( on the same kind of dyno ).

Does it grind or is it notchy, mine was notchy for about the first 1k miles, now it's fine and i didnt change anything. With that much horse power of course the stock clutch isn't gonna last.

The clutches on the X are notorious for failing, but I do believe a lot of it has to do with style of driving. Some people have theirs go out within 5k miles, whereas mine lasted until about 23k miles.

I'm at 15k miles now with 2 track days and 15-20 launches. It's still going strong.

I have about 14k miles on my car and I am about to replace mine. Driving has a lot to do with it, but I have maybe lanched my car 5 times maybe. I think it is hit or miss with some of them, cause I definitely know how to drive a manual and Im not that hard on it. It really only get driven down highway 18 miles and back per day so very few shifts. I have not been to drag strip, Auto X, or a Track Day. I'm an old man that enjoys spirited driving, but I would say I probably baby the car alot more than most Evo owners. The clutches on things I do not hink will last for 30k miles especially if you add modifictions. Mine is cooked and I make 340whp.

I suggest an Exedy or ACT street clutch.

single disks have been recently claimed to be causing issues with the slave cylinder. Twin disks are less work for the cylinder and usually better anyways. Exedy makes a great twin, as does carbonetics but they are of course more expensive than a single disk.

It depends on your goals and horse power and pockett book. A solid clutch for up to 500hp is the Exedy Stage 2 for just under 600. If you really have some cash you can get a twin clutch, but then you are taking about 1800. Ive gotten quotes from 600 to 800 to install.

I have not heard such great things about the ACT clutch for the X. I know 3 vendors all suggested the same clutch to me I also know one vendor that isvery well known for their Evo drag cars and they are completley against ACT for EVOs.

What was the reasoning for the anti-ACT suggestions?

For whatever reason they have a tendency to not get along well the Evo's drivetrain. This goes for VIIIs, IXs and Xs.

I am close to 23K miles on my stocker and have been making beyond stock power for most of that time and still not one slipping problem (knock on wood).

not to mention all the people with the ACT HD pressure plates that are breaking the master cylinders.

Yeah, there was soo much info flooded on the forums about the ACT for the evo's that I really had to dig and research for a while. I'm pretty damn sure I'm going with Exedy at this point.

I know they are pricey but has anyone heard any feedback on the RPS clutches?

ddawg1130

Yeah I saw a thread somewhere on here where they went deep into detail about the RPS and why they liked them. They also mentioned that they had installed one on an evo x and that it felt great.

I can't say that i know more about them then that though as they are way out of my price range and so I haven't researched them.

Yeah, I saw that one post on the install and then the followups. But I wanted to see if there was any additional info or feedback from other customers. When I replace my VIII clutch I'm going to see about RPS but still waiting to see if anybody aside from SSP comes out with an upgrade for the wife's X MR.

I just got off the phone here in Oklahoma with a place that works on lots of DSM and prior to X model Evos. They have worked with Exedy, ACT, and Spec Clutches. They highly recommend the Spec clutch. They say they have gotten better pedal pressures and longer life out of the Spec. I might have tried it out if I have not already order the Exedy.

Well I'm certainly glad to hear you found a place that'll get it in for you.

^^Trust they where also very down on ACT. Said that their quality is very very poor now days on most the applications. They sway all their customers to a different clutch then ACT if they can.

Okay I'm going to help you guys out with something I learned the hard way.

Don't come to the forums asking which clutch. Go to your local shops. Figure out what clutches they recommend. Bring that list back to the forums, and then ask which one.

Never pick a clutch instead of an installer. You could pick the most wonderful, powerful, reliable clutch in the world. But if the installers in your area don't have a clue how to install it. It'll be dead in no time.

And I mean no time.
