: White smoke from manifold/turbo/downpipe area.
SamiEvoX 05-30-2009, 05:09 PM I saw some white smoke coming from the manifold/downpipe area. Is it just water on the hot exhaust parts evaporating? I'm in FL and its been raining FOR DAYS. Im thinking maybe I went through a puddle before I parked? It has a weird smell, sort of like radiator fluid evaporating. If it was leaking oil would it be evaporating from the exhaust manifold area? And it would be bluish color right?
hollywood_X 05-30-2009, 05:17 PM Could just be the rain, what is the level on your coolant?

coolant in reservoir was above minimum line. And I opened up the radiator cap and it was full. I'm thinking it was the rain but its just weird that I saw so much smoke after I parked, I would think it would burn off while I'm driving.

wonder what this could be.... i wouldnt be suprised though if it was just the rain
SamiEvoX 05-30-2009, 10:38 PM Yeah must have been the rain, I checked several more times and haven't seen any more evaporation.

I spit coffee all over my computer... I must have been the only one who got that.

boostin20 05-31-2009, 12:57 AM Coolant puts off white smoke. Pure water doesn't.
yota73 05-31-2009, 03:13 AM Yeah I laughed at the pope comment as well. especially after angels and demons movie.
saytheb 06-01-2009, 09:13 PM Where did the smoke come out of? near windshield? or middle air inlet?
I've had steam blow out of the air inlet at idle from rain/water splashing into it.. looked like white smoke almost.

Below the windshield, from exahaust manifold.
saytheb 06-01-2009, 09:23 PM I'm going with the others then.. new pope, sorry.
hollywood_X 06-01-2009, 09:33 PM Just keep an eye on the coolant levels, it could be a pin hole leak in one of the lines back there.

hahahahaha
SamiEvoX 06-02-2009, 12:19 AM Just keep an eye on the coolant levels, it could be a pin hole leak in one of the lines back there.
I already had 1 pin hole leak on a coolant line and I fixed it. None of the coolant lines are far back enough to drip onto the manifold/downpipe.
I just saw a whole bunch of smoke again today and I DID NOT go through a puddle....IM THINKING that the oil line that goes to the turbo may be leaking. It only happens when I drive it a little harder, so I'm guessing its from that turbo oil line, which shouldn't be too hard to fix. I dont wanna go to the dealership if its minor. I'm going to take a look when I get home.
SamiEvoX 06-02-2009, 03:01 AM It's definitely not coolant, it smells way too strong and nasty to be coolant. I'm thinking its oil. So far I haven't been able to figure out where the leak is. Oil level is still the same. It's not dripping on the ground or anything.
kenpo1441 06-02-2009, 03:07 AM I used to own a Mazdaspeed6...I know exactly what smoke from an oil leak looks like. One day at an autocross I had the bat mobile smoke screen working in my favor.
SamiEvoX 06-02-2009, 05:11 AM I got down in there as much as I could in my driveway, and I found the liquid. Its definitely not motor oil, it's transmission fluid. I'm thinking it's the overspill from when I did my tranny fluid change and I never cleaned it off. I don't know any other reason for it to be leaking, but I'm going to get it on a lift tomorrow and check it out. I'm just glad its not motor oil.
SamiEvoX 06-02-2009, 09:17 PM Got it on the lift today, and my T-case seal is leaking onto the exhaust. I'm taking it into the dealer in the morning.
SamiEvoX 06-03-2009, 05:26 PM They say its fixed, they said the fluid was boiling out of the vent tube because it was "contaminated" and the ONLY fluid that should be in the T-case is the Mitsubishi stock oil. They said they flushed it and filled it up with the factory stuff and now it's "fixed" and not leaking. Although thats hard to believe, I will see when I get it back.
boostin20 06-03-2009, 10:26 PM ^Interesting.
SamiEvoX 06-04-2009, 06:46 AM ^Interesting.
Got it back, seems to be okay so far. Didn't see smoke yet. I can still smell the old redline stuff but I think thats just the extra fluid burning off....because the Mitsubishi Diaqueen stuff doesn't smell anything like redline.
