: Advice on Home Receiver?

So I have a ~6 year KLH old receiver that I picked up for $90 new that powers two large speakers in my living room.

I have an output from the TV, and my HTPC running into it. Essentially, anything I view through the TV (DVD, Wii, etc) or through the HTPC gets played through these speakers.

I generally don't crank them up very loud, and they're nothing fancy.

However, the receiver is finally on it's way out, and it's making a ground loop hum. I don't care enough to fix it, so I figured I'd replace it.

Anyway, I just need a cheap 2 channel amp with a remote control and an FM tuner. I want to keep it under $100, so obviously I know I'm not getting anything fancy. However, I'm sure that $100 will go further online then it would at Best Buy.

Anyone have any recommendations?

Yamaha home theatre in a box.. I paid $500 for mine, 90 x 6 (new ones are at least 100 x 6) 6.1 piano finish speakers, Pro Logic II, DTS. .06% THD.

it looks nice and sounds pretty good, (not amzaing, but good)

I can run all of my component and composite video through it also, (but not HDMI)

"nice" "sony" and "audio" don't belong in the same paragraph. :(

They look nice, but they're really poor.

My old amp was "100 watts" (which is probably "50" per channel), but the way watts are rated and such isn't consistent or reliable.

Well, I don't want wires everywhere, so two speakers works better for me. Plus, they are old school style four foot tall speakers, and they're basically furniture as well. If they were replaced by a smaller speaker setup, the room would kind of look funny.

Most people don't like to go this way, but its how I get all my stuff...

I go through RentAll, but I don't ever pay finance charges. You have 3 months to pay off whatever you bought without paying any finance charges. My big comfy chair was $300, so I just gave them $100 a month for 3 months.
And I get some of my stuff from there used, so someone else has made some payments before I got it, and I get it at whatever the remaining price is. Sometimes I get sweet deals. My computer was almost half price.
They have some really nice home theater systems, some are around $150-200. You might check it out.

Otherwise, Walmart has a cheapie for under $50 :D

Oh and with your wires if you don't want them everywhere, you can cheat like me, and poke a hole in your carpet just big enough to run the wire through and poke it back up right where your speaker is going to sit.

True, but I'd still like to know what models to look for.

Wow.

Only thing is, second or third hand electronics from people you don't know can be sketchy, especially with the type of customers I've seen at the local ones.

Otherwise, Walmart has a cheapie for under $50 :D

Is it on their website? I couldn't find it online.

True, but if and when I do a surround system, it will be in my new house, and I'll do it right and run it through the walls, wall mount the speakers, etc. I'd much rather just keep it simple for now.

Spend the money... I've got a $600 Kenwood unit thats 15+ years old. It works great and does everything I need.

Nah, not worth it for me. I use the thing once a week, if that. I'd have to go through 6 $100 units to justify the Kenwood.

Plus, my opinion of Kenwood is pretty low. Just look at the problems with the MP3 and MSP head units. They're just not made well.

If I were to pay that kind of money, I'd go with a Denon.

I think that cheapie at Walmart was RCA...I just got it as a Christmas present for my parents, I don't know if its on their online website or not. Maybe a discontinued product, not sure. I'll try and find it somewhere online.

*edit: I just looked at Walmart online and there is a 650watt JVC for $60. Kmart has a couple of $60 ones as well.

We are talking about two different periods in time. They carried a much better track record back in the day. Whatever you do... avoid the all-in-one units.

by all in one, you mean dvd/receiver in the same housing?

I saw a 5.1 JVC setup with speakers at Wal Mart, but all I want is the actual receiver, and I only want a 2 channel.

They units still work while only using two channels.
