: Mini Backfire Problem
MR. Tim 07-22-2009, 05:45 PM So over the past few days I've noticed that in between my 2-3, and 3-4 shifts, i get a small backfire. Its not really a backfire with a pop and fire shooting out, more/less like a "puff". If you can imagine a bubble in the exhaust somewhere and then when it pops, thats the type of effect i get. Hard to explain and annoying as all hell. I cant imagine what would be causing this, but if i had to guess, I'd put it on the throttle tables. Car is dyno tuned, MBC at 24.5psi, KN drop-in filter, UICP, UR HFC, and a Buschur Quiet Catback. Thanks in advance.
TRUSTcompany9000 07-22-2009, 05:51 PM Very very normal with a HFC or test pipe. It comes from the excess gas build up in your HFC burning off. I usually get mine in shifts from 3-4 and 4-5.
joshesevo22 07-22-2009, 05:52 PM Just wondering if your the same MR. Tim on evom to in local pittsburgh area. But yea my car backfires/ pops/ shoots fireballs all the time :p
MR. Tim 07-22-2009, 05:57 PM Yes that is me. This is normal driving BTW - between 3-4K rpm. It doesnt do this when i am running it hard.
jmayevox 07-22-2009, 05:58 PM Yea I think this is normal for turbo cars with exhaust for my s2k did it all the time between every shift with normal driving.

Calm down man. Your question was already answered. There's not much else to contribute so people were having fun.

niminuh 08-09-2009, 11:53 PM Two questions:
Is there any long term damage?
Will it pass emissions?
i have it too but mine shoots out 12inch flames
Two questions:
Is there any long term damage?
Will it pass emissions?
No and probably not lol

Long term damage... meh, probably not?
Emissions, depends. If they're just doing a peek test, a test pipe will stick out like a girl on an Evo forum.
If they're just doing an OBD read, it should be fine, assuming you're not throwing a CEL.
clear it with the AP before you go there and its good to go.....the CEL anyway
being an ex certified tech... they will see the ecu was cleared and fail you. almost everyone just does the obdII check.

They can't see codes were cleared, whether it was outside the door like i've done, or a week before hand. All they can see is no pending codes and no history codes.
niminuh 08-11-2009, 07:30 AM thanks for the info

Actually, they see a bit more than this... The OBD check is looking for more than just current or pending codes. When you reset your ECU (clear codes or disconnect battery), what you're actually doing is clearing certain data in the ECU. The two things that an OBD check looks for are codes and what monitors have been completed. Depending on the year of your car, a certain quantity of these monitors will have to be completed before an OBD emissions test will pass.
