: downshifting ..rev match or not?
Tekniqz 07-28-2009, 08:19 AM So I have a question, I rev match all the time everytime i downshift, however, a friend of mines does not. He just goes from gear-to-neutral. For example he'll go from 4th gear to neutral if he is coming up to a red light. Is gear to neutral bad or does it even matter at all?? Thanks
DarwinX 07-28-2009, 02:54 PM I try to rev match everytime I downshift, but at speeds lower than 20 mph as I come to a stop...I put it in neutral and coast to the stop.
RR08EVOX 07-28-2009, 03:03 PM if ur coming to a full stop, it doesnt matter, just toss it in neutral, then say the light turns green as ur approaching, just tap the gas to get the revs back up a little and slide it into 2nd or 3rd.
SmoothTT07 07-28-2009, 04:33 PM If your coming to a stop its better to put it in neutral. No work for the clutch to do and then you also save gas. But if your going a round a slow bend or something where you need to downshift, its gonna be better to rev match.
Excalibur 07-28-2009, 04:45 PM I heard on another forum that rev matching will burn more oil. Is that true? Is it that big of a deal? Any proof of this?

kick it into neutral
Slo4B11 07-29-2009, 12:40 AM if your on stock brake pads i suggest rev matching and using some engine braking to avoid a bit of brake dust haha.
It does not matter if you go to Neutral. There is nothing that your going to hurt
realgeneric 07-29-2009, 03:15 AM There are both pros and cons of downshifting while coming to a stop.
Pros:
You can save wear on your brake pads by letting the engine's vacuum pressure slow you down, known colloquially as "engine braking." If you are in 5th at 60 mph and see a red light coming up, by shifting to fourth, third, and second before you come to a stop will slow you down with less wear on the brakes than if you just went 5 -> N and hit the brakes.
Also since you'll be in some form of gear through the deceleration, you have the ability to give power to the wheels if you have to for any reason (i.e. in traffic if you notice the lane next to you opening up and you want to change to that lane and gun it, or if you're on the autobahn going 80 mph and a M5 is coming up from behind you at 180 mph and you need to get out of its way fast).
Cons:
If you don't rev-match when you downshift, you will wear out the already delicate clutch even faster. Not rev-matching means just throwing the shifter from one gear to another without adding gas to adjust the RPM for the appropriate gear for the speed you're traveling. This will oftentimes result in a "lurch" forward as the clutch hooks up to the flywheel.
If you do rev-match, you'll use up gas. Downshifting while rev-matching often will use more fuel (though exactly how much I know not) than downshifting without rev-matching, or just throwing it in neutral and straight braking, which as I said earlier would wear your pads out faster.
In some states, it is illegal to coast in neutral, and I believe in certain European countries, it is considered "proper" to downshift to at least 2nd if you're coming from a high speed to a stop.
Ultimately, whatever way you want to stop your car, know that something is going to be affected, whether it be faster brake wear, or faster clutch wear. I personally chose to heel-toe downshift (learn it! it's fun and useful) so I have "faster gas wear" :D
SiliconTek 07-29-2009, 03:25 AM Rev match or bust...
Domo X 07-29-2009, 03:42 AM i usually rev-match, however, i'm pretty sure that doin so will insignificantly waste that much fuel, unless of course you've got like a race set up or something... :D
plus, rev matching is so much fun :)

Well, the Sport-SST rev matches correct? Who cares about fuel, it is smooth like Vaseline.

I think so, but yea, who cares about fuel? it's nothing significant... just enjoy!
