: Gold Heat Wrap??
Excalibur 08-07-2009, 11:59 PM I saw somewhere before that the gold heat wrap was the best heat deterant out there. Where can I get this and preferably for the best price. Sorry if that's not what it's called. I wanted to get it for some stuff under the hood for when I get the gt35r kit installed.
dakoop 08-08-2009, 12:07 AM So you want gold for cheap? ME TOO! :)
kenpo1441 08-08-2009, 12:23 AM Just find a McLaren F1 sitting around and steal all the gold insulation from the engine bay. ;)
Excalibur 08-08-2009, 12:42 AM People sometimes use it on their intakes.
ripnbst 08-08-2009, 01:17 AM COntact CBRD, they sued it on their track 9, but I can tell you now it aint cheap.
STItoEVOX 08-08-2009, 01:20 AM i seen it on a few guys STI top mount intercooler. i've wanted some for a few years now but never really looked into it. let us know what you find!
Excalibur 08-08-2009, 02:00 AM Ok, I found what I was looking for. I think I'll use this. http://www.hrpworld.com/index.cfm?tpc=HRP_Gold_Heat_Reflective_Racing_Film&form_prod_id=66,7_5325&action=product
Here is also alot of other heat protective products people might find useful.

I like the kevlar wrap too. I wonder which one is better.???
SmoothTT07 08-09-2009, 05:59 PM $26 per foot .... sheesh

boostin20 08-09-2009, 11:27 PM Thanks for the links.
Clipse3GT 08-10-2009, 01:12 AM HRP world is good guys, I ordered stuff from them before.
GGEVOX 08-10-2009, 01:14 AM I like how that stuff looks too but damn thats a rip off.
Jeremy@SSP 08-10-2009, 09:21 PM OK, so I went to my local speed shop. And D.E.I. makes Gold heat wrap. And not anywhere near that expensive.
It's called " REFLECT-A-GOLD " $ 34.99 2" wide....15' feet long.
Reflects up to 850 degrees and reflecting 80% of that heat.
Self adhesive.
So, I took off my AMS top intercooler pipe that runs directly over the engine. And holy shit! Today it's over 100 degrees outside, drove my car for 2 hours straight. As soon as I pulled up to my house, I opened my hood to see if there was any temp. difference. Un freaking believable......I could grab, and hold my hand around the intercooler pipe!!!! and keep it there!!! DO NOT TRY THIS IF YOUR PIPES ARE NOT WRAPPED!!! YOU WILL GET BURNED!!!
The other front pipe that I didn't wrap.....I couldn't even touch it for a Milli second without frying my finger!!! I cant believe there is that much of a difference. I'm waiting for the non wrapped pipe to cool down so I can wrap that one too.
And I know, I'll take pictures as soon as my friend shows up with my camera.
IMO.....This shit works!!!!!
dakoop 08-10-2009, 09:25 PM Interesting
Jeremy@SSP 08-10-2009, 09:39 PM I really wish I had a laser temp guage. But there's well over 100 derees difference between the 2 pipes. And the ones not even over the motor, I could brand AMS in my arm its so hot. This will most def. help with heat soaking your pipes while at the track. I mean, the cooler the air is going into your intercooler, the colder it will be coming out.

Those things are fun to use to see what temp everything is. I wish I had one.
ak47m203 08-10-2009, 10:43 PM if they can make an uicp or lower pipes with this material wrapped that will look good.

question. why would you want to keep the heat in the uicp? you are sending the air to the intercooler so the colder you can get the air the better.

did you read any of what i said??? or even the name of the product???
It REFLECTS THE HEAT :duh:
And don't ? in your head weather or not it works.....It's widely used in racing!! Nascar to F1, and any body else that wants to reflect heat.....from hot things.....that you don't want hot....
STItoEVOX 08-10-2009, 11:15 PM Haha this is not to be confused with exhaust wrap.
Jeremy@SSP 08-10-2009, 11:16 PM Thought the name was a dead give away, lol

no need to be rude. i miss read. i was thinking that didnt sound right.

lol. yeah i was thinking that was wrong.

irmerm 08-10-2009, 11:52 PM I am still a bit in the dark about the desired effect that wrapping intercooler piping would have. If anything, the unwrapped intercooler pipe is hot because of the hot air inside, not from ambient heat in the engine compartment. When the air gets compressed by the turbo it heats up. The intercooler is supposed to get rid of this heat. If the pipe is wrapped, wouldn't that keep more heat in the pipe and therefore raise the temperature of the air inside? The description of the extremely hot unwrapped pipe seems to support this theory.
Jeremy@SSP 08-11-2009, 02:36 AM Yes you are right about the fact that the turbo produces hot air.
My ticp are aluminum which conducts heat like a mofo. And since those pipes run directly over top of my turbo, exhaust manifold, and engine, all nice and snug with the hood shut....
It will lower the amount of heat soak that is produced by all the heat in your engine bay.
If you have, lets just say for example, 500 degree heat moving through a 300 degree pipe, the air going into the intercooler would be warmer than say...500 degree heat moving through a 100 degree pipe.
