: Helping a brother out.
Whitewind 08-26-2009, 04:38 AM Okay guys I'm total new to tuning on the evo all the way but I really want to learn, I have read all of this forum and on evom forum too about tuning. But for some reason some things I do not understand at all. I think that's due to not having a logger and everything else to SEE what going on than trying to THINK what's going on. I'm person don't like other people working on anything I own (Unless they want to help me learn). Built my Corvette from ground up to tranny, motor, to rear-ends. but this is all new to me. So Let me ask, I hope to have everything installed this weekend maybe next depending on parts showing up Evoscan, EcuFlash,ETS DP VTA with extra bung, Wideband LC-1 and Tactrix OpenPort 2.0 how hard is it to tune (please be honest), using Gunzo 91oct Map. Gunzo, man you know your shit back to front so know it really easy for you to tune. Don't want to be (not knocking) one of those guys buys AP thinking there cool. I want to know what I did and how I can always improve more on tuning in the future for my Evo x. So what it comes down to, when i install everything will you guys help guy out? I know all of you are super busy and for me so am I due having 3 week old baby boy.(but got have my car time) Thanks again for all of you guys info, If nothing else I still learned a lot. Thanks GUYS!!!Also there is no tuner around here at all. Just coal mines and super cold weather.
TRUSTcompany9000 08-26-2009, 04:47 AM To flash the map? Cake, it takes about 15 seconds.
Now as for the actual tuning part of it, I would highly suggest looking this over:

And then once you get some logs done, start asking your questions from there :)
xPRimNT 08-26-2009, 06:04 AM Of course! Welcome to the fun.
Tuning isn't difficult, but the understanding behind it is essential to figuring out what to do. Start out slow and ask plenty of questions here! There is plenty of help around.
mad_viii 08-26-2009, 10:34 AM Might be a good idea to pick up one of Ben Straders efi tuning books to get some background.
Not a lot too it though. Goals are to get the max push at about 15* after tdc, afr as close to rich best power as you can, keep egt in check, all while keeping the factory knock sensor happy. That's about it.
gunzo 08-26-2009, 01:30 PM Can I also suggest
A G Bell's Turbocharged and forced induction
Corky Bell's Maximum Boost (not as detailed but good beginner's guide)
If you have time, read the NASA white paper on cylinder pressures and timing ..
Most importantly .. be open to everything ;) .. there is no MY WAY IS THE BEST deal ..
I think a good start which most of the guys here did is take one of the offered maps here and compare it to a stock map and then ask questions from there ..
you may not have the answers you want though hahaha ..
Feel free to PM me .. but I'm also busy at the moment with work .. and if I clear my mails :bowlol: .. so it may take a while to get some answers from me
Whitewind 08-26-2009, 02:02 PM Hey guys just want to start out by saying thanks!!! I’m a very hard headed bastard but man do I want to learn how to do this. I plan on modding my evo whenever I can. Shit only had car 2 months. Yes I will look over everything you guys posted and will read and read some more (got to do something at work). All the info I can get is highly appreciated. Again thank you guys! But feel free add more stuff for me to read up on.

It's too early in the morning to already be this confused.

TargeT 08-26-2009, 05:38 PM Reading a lot is good, it will make everything easier.
1st step:
buy tactrix cable ~$180
(read about turbo systems)
2nd step:
Buy Evoscan (even though its in beta, most people seem to get it to work for them) ~$25
(read tuning guide posted above)
3rd step:
Log a bunch
(Read more)
4th step:
study logs, ask questions (though after all that reading you wont have many)
I wouldn't buy mods till you have that stuff down, you can get a LOT out of the stock X, and if your not in a "hot" area (its fall, so this shouldn't be an issue) you don't really need to replace much (IMO) to get to 320-350WHP (as long as you can get some decent octane gas)
bradze 08-26-2009, 05:49 PM tuning is a good way to fuck up your car. start auto-xing and go to track days. when you get better get an AP, a rear swaybar, and maybe exhaust. don't waste your time with "tuning", i think there are much better ways of spending your money.
Enzal 08-26-2009, 05:57 PM tuning is a good way to fuck up your car. start auto-xing and go to track days. when you get better get an AP, a rear swaybar, and maybe exhaust. don't waste your time with "tuning", i think there are much better ways of spending your money.
I don't agree with this statement myself, but I think it all depends in the end on what you are trying to achieve. In my area we only have small auto-X tracks. I myself could get away with what Bradze suggested. couses are small stock HP is enough to get me around the tracks. Better suspension would just allow me to bring more in and out of the corners.
On the other hand I can not fully disregard what a good tune will bring to any car. The stock tune is very generic and safe. It has a lot of potential even on stock parts to tweak it to your liking and driving style. Once you add aftermarket parts and don't tune, you won't be seeing the full potential of those parts. That sir imo is a waste of money.

I completely disagree, as long as you actualy take the time to understand what you are doing and GO SLOW (if you read anything you'll know to go slow) then tuning is the biggest /cheapest power gains and being able to tune your own car for different situations is PRICELESS!
and besides that point, tell me WHERE you can spend $230 and get the utility and gains that tuning / logging will give.
bradze 08-26-2009, 06:17 PM just my suggestion, for me its much more fun tracking the car then buying new pieces, i think a lot more people would feel this way if that's what they start doing. autox/track days are addicting!
verkion 08-26-2009, 07:44 PM Tuning is easy...just change a bunch a numbers. Tuning properly is hard...LOL.
Ok, seriously, there's a little thread I started a while ago regarding getting started with ECUFlash. That has instructions for flashing/reading the ROMs.
And yes, for all you harassing me to add the tuning information, I'm getting to it already! LOL.

Man come on!!! You know where i live??? F-Wyoming almost to MT boarder There not an auto track anywhere near me at all. And modding is what i do, look at my vBgarage see what the hell i do. Im just new to Evo tuning. Get me on a old school chevy and i'll rap your head around it! Me as a person im all about HP!!! Been Drag racing for Over 15 years use to be big into street racing in DFW and Waco for years (I know its bad and everything when i was younger). And this TOPIC about helping me tune not asking if i should modd my car. Just saying man.
:whipping:
Whitewind 08-26-2009, 10:40 PM Target Thanks man for the info! Anything i can take from anybody that TUNES (keyword lol) someday I promise i will help you out some way. Keep the info coming about tuning! Thanks guys!
xPRimNT 08-26-2009, 10:47 PM Of course tracking your car is more fun, what the hell does that have to do with anything? Tuning your car takes time and effort, it's work! Tracking the car is not even in the same category.
However, there is nobody in their right mind that would take the pig-rich, poorly tuned, stock Evo X over a properly tuned X to a track. For the price (cheap-as-hell), OpenSource tuning is by far the greatest bang for your buck, plus you get to learn a ton about the workings of your vehicle.
Seriously, that is one of the most ridiculous suggestions I've read. Get off the mighty "Track Horse" and realize that not everybody has the same priorities or access as you do. Sheesh.
Whitewind 08-26-2009, 11:17 PM AMEN!!! lol.
