: Blown Head Gasket or Worse????
proracer718 09-02-2009, 01:58 AM Well here the run down of what happened.
In the past month had a lot of performance mods done, like turbo upgrade. I also did some ARP headstuds, HKS 1.5mm Head Gasket and Kelfords 214-B. I got the car tuned and made some incredible power on 93 Oct. pump gas.
That night after putting about 150miles on the car, I was driving through the Lincoln tunnel with some friends in the car and in 4th gear at about 6000-7500RPM I heard a pop noise and noticed Antifreeze on the windshield. As soon as that happened the car sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders. So I let the car coast out but still on the gas lightly so I dont get stuck in the tunnel, once I got to the first light the car died. We were starting to push it and I tried starting it just to get pass the intersection since the city traffic is crazy. Got the car parked and started looking to see what went wrong. First thing we noticed was that the top Radiator hose popped off. So now we fill it back up and when we tried starting it, the fluid would just shoot out the radiator. Once we saw that we left the car alone and towed it back to the shop.
Now the next day I was curious and tried starting it before I pulled the spark plugs out and it started, sounded like a WRX and I shut it off. I then pull the plugs out and Cyl 3&4 plugs were were with coolant, cyl 1&2 were dry.
My question is, how likely is it that I did more damage then just being a headgasket????
dakoop 09-02-2009, 02:00 AM Was it running hot?
proracer718 09-02-2009, 02:00 AM I haven't done any test yet or taken anything apart so I am not 100% sure what it is yet but wanted to get some thoughts on what it could be.
proracer718 09-02-2009, 02:01 AM Was it running hot?
No, temp was perfect when it happened, and from the time this happened to when I stopped it wasn't long so temp was still good.
dakoop 09-02-2009, 02:03 AM Something sounds odd with the whole situation. Hose pop off first, or did you get compression in the cooling system and pop it off?

Well once car was finished before the tune, we bleed the whole system and no problems. On the dyno for tuning the car was ran a lot and no issues. I drove the car from the shop that tuned it to the shop I work at and car was good. Drove the car from NJ to Bklyn and car was still good, then drove from Bklyn back to NJ to pick up my friends and car is still good. When we left from there house to the city to hang out and in the tunnel that is when this happened. I did press on the car a few time while doing all this driving and car was still good but this time around is when this happened.
Only thing we can notice visually when the car shot the coolant on the windshield and starting running wierd was the coolant hose being popped off the radiator.
F/A18mech 09-02-2009, 02:28 AM You might have blown a freeze plug.

Was just searching around for what you said, so will deff look into it tomorrow when I get to work.
But would that cause the spark plugs to be wet with coolant though??
cornercarver 09-02-2009, 02:51 AM YOU FORGOT TO CHECK YOUR DIPSTICK SONNY!!!
In all seriousness, there will be bubbles in you oil if you blew a gasket(obviously since water and oil do not mix). Your exhaust will also have white smoke if you can get it running. In severe cases, if you jack up the front of the car coolant will drip out of your tailpipe.
The best way to check is to run a compression test.
cornercarver 09-02-2009, 02:52 AM You also may be pushing coolant as well.
dakoop 09-02-2009, 02:52 AM If your oil looks like chocolate milk you got problems. Head gasket sound very possible, buy why? That could have blown off the hose.
proracer718 09-02-2009, 02:58 AM Well havent got to do any test yet, was just trying to get some thoughts on what things it might be or things I should check.
I will be doing a compression and leak down test and well as draining the oil and the water we put back in.
Just trying to figure out what can have cause this. I know the motor might have deff been pushed to a limit since the car was tuned and dynoed on pump gas and made alot of power @ 29psi. But still dont know if that would cause what ever problem is.
how much power you make? good luck and let us know what you find.
jApOrMs 09-02-2009, 03:47 AM i remember when i blew the motor on my cobalt ss it sounded like a wrx(nice sound but not cool with a non-boxer engine) and later found out i blew the ringlands @ #2 and #4. goodluck!
DVDee 09-02-2009, 12:42 PM +1 on how much power you got. I don't think you may have reached the limit. There are others running a lot of boost on pump and this is the first instance I see of this.
Kooldino 09-02-2009, 12:54 PM Coolant on you plugs? Yeah, that's a blown HG for sure.
I have no idea why the hell your coolant line popped off...unless for some reason your leak was SO bad that it managed to somehow leak your cylinder compression INTO your coolant system in a big way, causing the line to blow.
Anyway, rather than playing games, just pull the head already. Continuing to toy with it isn't going to fix the problem. Furthermore, if a lot of your coolant is leaking into your cylinders, it can hydrolock the motor when you try to start it, and potentially bend a rod or damage a piston, since water isn't really compressible.
Post pics of your progress!
mad_viii 09-02-2009, 02:54 PM You pressurized the cooling system, that's why the rad hose came off. Either blown head gasket or lifted head. They may not have torqued the studs properly, or they loosened up after the initial run in and were not re torqued.

:+1:
proracer718 09-02-2009, 04:21 PM Well the car made 500+WHP
elementalcode 09-02-2009, 04:52 PM well there u go! :tumbleweed:
Well the car made 500+WHP
Geeze, maybe that's why?
