: Noob Question: Possible Damage When Failed to Launch MR Correctly

Hi all,
I am a total noob and I was wondering if you kind experts can shed some lights on this:

My PB MR has around 6k KM on it and just had my first oil change about 2 weeks ago. The car is 100% stock.

Last night, I have decided to try the launch control in which I failed twice :freak:...I did do my research on this forum before I tried it (ie. s-sport, turned ACD half/completely off, step on the brake, step on the gas...), but I think I missed the part where I need to step on the brake ALL THE WAY IN which I found out later last night.

So what happened was, during the first try, I switched to s-sport with ACD half off as I have read some threads saying that it works this way also. The car started wanting to go when the RPM reaches between 2k to 3k, and I let go of the gas because I didn't think it's normal as from my understanding, it should rev freely to 5k or 5.5k RPM. The car jerked as I let go of the gas. I did not get any "slow down" messages this time. However, if I remember it right, I did smell something which I thought could it be my clutch or brake burning? Just a little, not a lot though.

For my second attempt, I switched to s-sport and turned ACD completely off. Similar things happened that the car started wanting to go at 2k to 3k RPM and this time I gave it a little more gas. This brought the RPM all the way to the red line which made the car jerk again and I got the "slow down" message this time (I think the power was cut off automatically afterwards). I am not sure if this created more burning smell as it could be from the last attempt. Both attempt caused the wheels to spin a little.

My biggest question now is, would the above failed launches cause any damages to the car? Power axle? brakes? transmission? or whatever components that I don't know of...

On my way home, the car seemed to be running fine on the highway. However, I think I heard some metal squeeking after I got to city street speed but I am not sure where it is coming from. It sounded like it's coming from the right front wheel. It's not a constant squeeking. It's more like, as the car is moving forward, it squeeks, stops, squeeks, stops, in short intervals (about 1 second in between squeeks). I then pulled the car out again and went for a spirited drive to try to reproduce it but it was gone.

I hope I am just being paranoid and would love to hear some thoughts on this.

Sorry for the long message and I hope they makes sense. Thanks in advance for helping out!!

yeah you gotta put down the brake all the way down. i believe this concept is torque braking or something of the sort.. i do it if i wana launch my automatic bmw LOL

but anyways i did launch my MR for the first time like last month. i never actually got it to go to 5k - 5.5k but i did get it up to 3k. i feel like it struggles a bit after 3k haha iunno you just have to try it...

does anyone else think that turning on s-sport mode takes too long? lol

thanks for all the responses!

Hi X MR,
yes, the squeeking noise seems to be more noticable when turning...or when I rock the car side to side like going through slalom.

well, S-Sport stiffens the shocks I believe so that def has something to do with it...I haven't heard any squeeking noises, though. I would check the suspension first.

S-Sport does nothing with the shocks. The evo doesnt have adjustable suspension.

I remember reading that if you hold down the brake and gas too long the SST goes a lil nuts and you may or may not launch consistently. If i remember correctly if you want a successful launch hold down both pedals no more than 3-5 secs.

As the others have posted, full pressure on the brake pedal,
and go to floor (all the way, don't hesitate) with the gas pedal.

In my early trials, my mistake was not being more direct with the gas pedal.

Agreed with everyone else. My first couple of goes at the launch control were massive failures. I kept getting the slow down message, the tranny would dis engage and the motor would spin up to the redline. I was being way to timid, not giving it enough gas and not enough brake.

Just grow some balls, mash the brake, mash the gas, it'll rev to 5000 and then let the brake go when you're ready. Once you get the hang of it it's easy as pie.

The term is called trans-braking, but is used loosely. A real trans-brake dumps fluid from reverse into 1st gear in an automatic tranny at the flip of a switch or more often, a release of a button.

Is it ?? I always thought its brake torquing .. :tumbleweed:

Trans brake is like aftermarket button pusher :D ..

Press down Firmly on ur brakes and release at the higher RPMs for ur launch! Pretty much like a BURN OUT  in a RWD make sure you have all ur settings ready
