Yeah I take supplements & still eat. Also exercise almost daily.....so yeah I agree with the author of this article as she states that you cannot eat pretty much anything and still be healthy while taking supplements.

I really need to start focusing more on my diet and deciding wether or not I should use any suppliments... there is a lot of information to sift through though.

If you have questions post them up... I ran a health food store for a while. I'm not Mr. Scientist but I've kept up with industry news from the Mr. Scientist folks.

Personally, I hate pills. I take Vit. C and Glucosamine-Chondroitin daily because I find it much easier to get those in large amounts that way, but I don't see the point in taking anything else. I like my veggies and I do eat some fruit.

I can understand this but your diet is above average. What you are lacking is essential fatty acids. The American diet does not get them in nearly high enough doses. I also recommend B-vitamins since they are the fundamental building block of everything in your body.

Additionally, I take a food based multi-vitamin, these are generally a 1/3 of the strength of your normal multivitamin. Think of this like gap coverage, an additional support to your diet.

Looking at these sources, I think I'm OK on the basic levels.
B-vitamins: love potatoes, chili peppers, turkey, tuna, tempeh, and I eat lentils and bananas in recipes.
Essential fatty acids: love fish and shellfish, use canola oil a lot in cooking, I like sunflower seeds, adore leafy vegetables, and eat walnuts.

Until a year ago, I didn't take anything and I've never broken a bone or had more than a cold.

I will be sure to ask as I get closer to that stage.

WTF is a food based multivitiman?

I just saw this on CNN this morning: Vegetables without vitamins (http://www.soilandhealth.org/06clipfile/0601.LEMag/LE%20Magazine%2C%20March%202001%20-%20Report%20Vegetables%20Without%20Vitamins.htm)

In a nutshell, food based vitamins are extracted from natural sources. Using a process which generally involves yeast and other things they remove the nutrients from real foods and produce them into a pill. The binding technique is similar to real food, which translate into better absorption (and often higher potency, remember milligrams are a measurement of weight).

I think its a wise idea to practice prevention rather then needing to switch to pharmaceuticals later, when something finally breaks.

So where can one get these food based vitamins?

Mr. Win

I've noticed recently that Vitamin Shoppee (or any Health Food store) has started to carry them. I like New Chapter or Mega Foods. Purchase the mens multi (not the one daily).

What are your thoughts on Nutritional Yeast as a Parmesan substitute?

Mr. Win
03-04-2008, 02:56 PM
Its a great way to take in additional vitamins and increase the nutritional content of meals/snacks. I also like adding it to popcorn.

I take these everyday along with atleast an hour workout. I just started this routine a few months ago. Any opinions on these two supplements? The first link is a multi vitamin made of food that you can take on an empty stomach. The second is fish oil you take with a meal and usually work out afterwards.

Mr. Win

Fish oil doesn't need to be after a workout. How many do you take of the megafood?

Malves85

I heard somewhere that its best to work out after you take fish oil. I take one megafood in the morning and one fishoil after work before I go to the gym.

Mr. Win

You could argue that, but its really best when taken with a protein. It helps the absorption rate.

Corwin, for someone in my situation, what should I be taking weekly/daily (in your professional opinion?

Corwin, for someone in my situation, should should I be taking weekly/daily (in your professional opinion?

I think you asking what should you be taking?

I feel like we lead similar lifestyle. You probably more active then I but fairly similar.

I take a the following and I think its a perfect balance.

New Chapters Every Man Multi (not the one a day). 1 Pill Per Day.
Jarrow EPA/DHA. 1 Pill Per Day
Solgar Co-enyzme B-Vitamins 1 Pill Per Day.

Green Vibrance (Any greens mix with a healthy mix of wheat, barley, spirulina) 2-3x a week.
Whey/Casein Protein 2-3X a week (preference varies highly on the individual).

For the athlete in you-
I find magnesium tea to be great for occasionally sore muscles.
If your plagued then I would look into a ZMA which is a proprietary blend that helps muscle recover faster.

The allergy in you-
QBC Plex 1 pill 2x a day. Fill free to tapper in larger doses if you're not feeling better.

so what kiind of dollar amount would I be looking at per month for all of this?

Katya4me

Corwin, what's your take on the Jarrow brand? I just placed an order for their Jarrow Formulas Glucosamine, Chondroitin & MSM as it incorporates the Vit. C I'm taking already and they seemed to have fairly good reviews.

Depends how you shop,

Multi - 27ish (2 month supply)
Fish Oil - 42ish (8 months supply)
B vitamin - 10ish (2 months supply)

Greens - 35ish (9 month supply)
Protein - 30ish (3.5 month supply)

I can't recall what magnesium cost (truth be told they always gave me a free bottle, we sold a lot of it)

iirc the QBC is 20ish (2months supply)

So, upfront cost is high and you may even want to tapper adding so much new nutrition to you body with a week or two break in between each new product.

Jarrow is an excellent brand. They have some of the highest quality testing in the industry. They hold the large majority of their products to pharmaceutical standards.

Excellent. :) I think I might stop by the health food store on the way home and look for that magnesium tea and nutritional yeast. I'm not a fan of dairy or pills, so I'm always looking for other sources of calcium.

You might be a candidate for Cal-mag (http://www.petergillham.com/product-line/peter-gillhams-natural-calm-plus-calcium.php) Make sure you buy the Raspberry-Lemon flavor (even if you decide to only go with mag). The others I'm not so fond of.

@Ross - Pick up the multi too.
