We're gonna end up talking about it, so let's talk about it here.

My sister bought two yesterday >_<

so far she really seems to like it.

As much as I typically hate windows, I'll stick to my windows mobile phone (blackjack).. I like being able to hack things on it, run whatever applications I choose (including ones I make myself), and since 99% of companies run exchange e-mail servers, having exchange push e-mail is nice. having to sync your e-mail every 10 minutes on the iphone can't possibly be good for the battery.

Kooldino
06-30-2007, 06:06 PM
Why did she buy two?

I really prefer a phone that has a supported OS.

Kansei
06-30-2007, 06:51 PM
one for her friend. She got to the store in a pretty big (by CT standards) city at 5:40pm and was 3rd in line lol

I think Apple really showed how to successfully launch a product.. *glares in the general direction of nintendo even though I got a wii on the first day they were out without that much trouble*

price the product way out of reach of most people who want it, and you won't have problems with keeping them in supply :P

oh and I'm LOLing at this: http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2007/06/iphone-jack-close-up-425.jpg

you can't use most aftermarket headphones with the iphone because of how recessed that port is. I know for sure my grados won't work with one without an adapter, and I know for sure that the adapters will have tiny little wiring in them

I hope they charge 29.99 for an adapter to use normal headphones with it :P

edit: companies are already advertising adapters, for around 9.99.

Yea he does. I'd like to play with the iPhone... I have a strong feeling the next iPod will look much like the iPhone. If you hadn't noticed the iPods have come down in price (which is something apple never does) so I imagine change is on the horizon.

Kansei

are you kidding me?

Sadly that's no joke. While AT&T could easily implement a system to receive MMS messages, the phone has no way of sending them.

I know when I had Sprint (back when PCS vision was like 'omg WHOOOA' and to get a cameraphone was over $300 with a 2-year contract) they didn't actually support MMS or even SMS! Everything was through a web interface, so it was a unified interface on all Sprint phones (awesome for tech support). If you got an e-mail, a text message, or an MMS, your phone would get a 'notification' that just sent you to the proper URL to view the message.

WARNING: the following paragraph is actually a single sentence, likely including Kansei's patented Nested Parentheticals. It was written in a thick mental fog and will NOT be corrected at a later date. You have been warned:

Since Apple is all about not allowing anyone to develop native software for the iPhone (yeah they have their reasons, I'm well aware of them and being an owner of a few Palm OS phones and a windows mobile smartphone, and seeing the quality and integration level of third party software, I can totally see why apple took that route) and is rather pushing the webapp on phone architecture, they could just handle SMS/MMS/e-mail that way as well (if they aren't already.. they could be disguising the web interface very well).

now back to your regularly schedule programming

But it's not on Verizon...

Is that not the absolute best feature about it? Imagine how locked-down and shitty it would be if Verizon sold it. Somehow I don't think Verizon would be too keen on selling a phone with wifi built-in, and integrating their 'get it now' pay for shit service into it would be.. not doable.

I wonder what would happened if they went EVDO and did their own thing.

P.S. They have shackled eachother, Apple has demanded a lot of control over the distribution

2) AT&T is Evil: You know this. Being stuck on AT&T for two years is going to be horrible. This is the company that had managers forcing customers to buy accessories with the iPhone just so they could meet their sales quotas. Plus, their reception and customer service leave a lot to be desired.

I agree 200% I hated cingular.

Liquid_Ag

+1. I had verizon for two years, had sprint for two years, had t-mobile for a year. AT&T is the only carrier (aside from helio but they don't even have their own network so it doesn't count) that carries decent phones and uses GSM.

Plus I really love how just changing the name of the company from SBC to AT&T (no relation at all to the former AT&T) makes everyone consider them big brother.. I knew that would happen :P

If anyone thinks it's AT&T who is 'shackling down' the iPhone, think again. I've run plenty of phones on their network (with or without their knowledge) and nothing has ever in any way been restricted.

I'd like to see someone do on average 5GB/month of data transfer on a data plan that is for 'normal' phones (non-PDA/smartphone) on any carrier other than AT&T and not get shut down very quickly. Verizon charges out the but to allow tethering to your laptop for data access, AT&T charges nothing and actually provides software to make it quite easy.

Plus even as a business customer Verizon sucks to deal with.. such a pain in the ass to get anything accomplished with them, from transferring lines, changing plans, etc.

Mr. Win
07-05-2007, 04:53 PM
I suppose it works in every direction I had nothing but problems with them and gave up trying anything and simply waited for my contract to elapse. Helio has so far been great to me and I'll let you know if I get shutdown... which I doubt.

Cable internet not an option? At least here, it's half the price (29.99 vs 59.99) and much faster (10Mbps/384Kbps vs 1.5Mbps/128Kbps). Factor in the 20-30 a month for having a stupid landline (the phone company here won't do standalone DSL) and you're pwned

not exactly sure how the phone company here can still survive, especially with the voip craze :P

Old house w/ antenna on roof= cable was never run to it in the first place.
She's currently paying $35/month + $24 for local phone service. DSL by itself would be $42 + taxes, etc.

Oh, and w/ Comcast here we're paying $50/month for internet only. :(

They'll usually run the cable line to the house for free.. they (Optimum Online) did for us, we never had cable since we had satellite since we built the house.

Probably not free if the wire needs to be underground though

Yeah a coupel of my laptops (I have 30+ sitting in my bedroom) have built-in support (via an extra internal expresscard slot) for verizon ev-do or AT&T hsdpa.. when AT&T turns on the HSDPA in Rochester i'll probably do it..

though I already have unlimited 3G data on my phone (last month I used 450MB and I didn't tether the phone to my laptop once!) so I can just pop my sim in the computer, and use it :)

wireless broadband is where it's at! Speeds of 1Mbps+ make it totally usable.. the only downside I see is a bit more latency but the convenience is well worth it.

Probably, but I couldn't say for sure. She apparently did call Comcast and it was more expensive than DSL anyway.

Jobs is a moron who needs to realize that buttons are a good thing. One of the things he brags about in this article is how a Mac's remote had 6 buttons compared to ~40 buttons on it's competitor's remotes.

I don't know about you, but I like being able to change channels by entering the number of the channel I want to view, rather than flipping through every channel to get to it.

I've had 4 phones since I got my first one in Jan. 03. 5 if you count buying another P900 to replace the touchscreen that broke on the first one. I gave away my first phone, working on selling the P900, and I refer to the Nokia as the "crap phone I'll use when I go to amusement parks".
