: Evo X GSR Only - Launching Techniques or Tips?

As weird as it sounds, I feel like it was easier to jump off the line when I was driving my 09 Lancer GTS. I wouldnt rev it real high, but I could easily just blip the revs up to 3-4k and pull my foot off the clutch and really get a good start. I'm a little afraid of trying this in my Evo X, because replacing a clutch would be way more money then it would have been with the GTS.

Anyways, there are times when I wanna do a mini launch and I was just wondering how you guys do it. Is there anyway to get off the line quickly without fully reving the car up and dropping the clutch. I always seem to feel the car bog down a little when I'm starting from a stop and it seems like no matter how crappy the car is next to me, it will take off a little quicker then me.

Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated. I know it would be too much to ask for but could anyone video tape how to launch the car at different RPMs?

Try doing a little roll and launch at about 5 to 10 mph you can get a pretty good jump that way.

That's not a little roll, that's a gigantic roll. That's like... 5 or 10MPH.

It's painful on the stock clutch, but to really launch these big, heavy pigs of cars with tiny little 2.0L motors, you just about have to dump the clutch. Are you remembering to fully disable ASC before launching?

DON'T DUMP THE CLUTCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The bottom line is the stock clutch sucks, it's hard to launch it well without burning it up. Either way you need a smooth engagement or you will gernade your diff, trust me, i'm on diff number two.

I also have a hard time launching. I've decided it's not worth it. Turning asc off does make a big difference. It feels like the clutch pulls out more smoothly. I'm not going to turn ASC off at every stop though...

It doesn't change the clutch engagement, per say, but it stops that awkward-as-hell-during-a-launch shift of power back and forth.

As for "turning it off every stop", are you launching the car that hard at every stop?

I really, truly question how some people drive. Launching the car hard, and/or turning off ASC, is something I do "rarely" or "on a track of some sort". Are some of you living the stereotypical Fast and Furious lifestyle, where every stop light, some Vin Diesel look alike challenges your honor or something?

id say there will be 3-4 times per week that id like to take off at a green light with some extra umph, maybe its because there is an STI next to me, or maybe im in a hurry, or maybe im just in the mood. its a little upseting that i really have to think about doing some sort of launch (and usually end up failing at it), when it was so damn easy to get off the line quick in my lancer GTS

You just have to keep driving the car until "Launches" become reflex. I usually take the car to 2000 and slip the clutch a bit and I can get a good "launch". And though the X is heavier than my VIII it should not be that much of a problem.

It's ok, you don't need to anyway if you are close to stock. Stop completely, put clutch to floor, press gas pedal to floor (2step kicks in), release clutch pedal slowly to engagement point, then release quickly (but not dumping it) while keeping gas pedal to floor. The car will launch like a raped ape. If it's done right, you shouldn't spin hardly at all (thus not activating the annoying awc limiting) and shouldn't smell clutch.

^ what if its a situation where ur at a light and ur not positive when its going to turn green and u dont neccessarly want the sound/attention of ur car revving against the rev limiter for an unknown period of time. how can u just do a mini launch as soon as it turns green, nothing too hard on the clutch, but good enough to get u going in a somewhat impressive manner

Do you need to launch .00002 seconds after the light turns???
Light - Clutch - put in first - gas - slip - Go. Total elapsed time maybe .5 seconds... then just smoothly roll away from traffic.

Practice Practice Practice!

Or watch cross lights for the yellow.

Or, ya know, just not street race.

Oh I'm sure he's not talking about street racing. That would be against forum rules. I think he just doesn't like bogging his car and watching the guy on the skateboard pull away from him... :ghey:

^ yup, i mean it doesnt bog that bad, but it also doesnt get off the line very quick, i would just like to show a little more of the cars potential

I simply don't launch. I'm easy on my clutch since I know I'm not good at hard launches. I agree with OP. We are talking about those mini launches.

this likely explains exactly what the OP is describing, and the differences they are feeling.

it's way fun if you find yourself a drag strip than trying to do it on the street. it will be hard not to get too much attention on the street.

haha I can relate. Every car beats me off the line, but I'm not trying to race anyone. I'll catch up in a few seconds anyway

my guess is the gts was easier and felt easier or even quicker off the line cause the evo is turbo'd. You have to overcome the lag. And no-i personally wouldn't dump the clutch on an awd car- i've heard too many horror stories of people destroying their transfer cases. If u dump the clutch the drivetrain takes the whole load and abuse. 8k for a new transfer case or 1k for a clutch? But if u fry your clutch or blow ur car up- u gotta pay to play- if u can't afford to replace or fix it- then it's probably not your beat intrest to trying launching the car all the time. Look up 2-step launch

you know you dont have to turn the ASC off at every light...just hold it in for a couple secs and it will be off until you turn the car off. Also dont worry about launching the car to show its true potential because were not tech drag cars were ralley cars. If you got an evo to street race most likely you got the wrong car for the job. Thats why mitsubishi got such a bad reputation for evo's breaking because they were being treated like they were something they really weren't...this is just my 2cents.

i have not launched my car once yet and there are always clowns on the road. i just give it a little gas once im in sec to let them know how fast the car really is. After that, usually no one wants to play with me. But i absolutely prob suck at launching. I used to launch my MS6 a lot...but that car was stock....

cant go wrong with 2 step lol. have ur revs pinned at 6K and dump the clutch rofl. no skill there.

The gsr is the easiest thing in the world to launch. Just save the money for a good clutch and ams cmc reinforcement ring and when you have the stuff ordered and it's close to the house, go out and hold clutch down, hold gas down, let out the clutch quickly, but not quite a dump and you're good to go. Stock clutch won't last long though.

I would never dump the clutch... mini launch = Tap the gas a bit to 3 or so, then release the clutch as you normally do while revs are not at zero, the faster the quicker you take off, dump it and prob fly, I havn't tried that.

Anybody is this hard on the car at all? basically starting the car at 3k? I cant see how it would be?
