: EcuFlash Noob Questions!!

Let me start out by saying I've been reading so much it's been making my head spin. I've also gone through every X ecuflash thread on evom (UGH!). I went through the beginner threads and ecuflash for dummies, etc and kept noticing a constant for the older evos. They all say to get the immobilizer code and put it in the new rom before writing the ecu. Is that something that is for the X as well? If so, can someone give me some direct info on where to pull and insert that code?

Also, I noticed people are modifying .xml's for mode 23, etc. I tried opening a rom with my .hex reader and it came out like the attached pic below. WTF? I also tried .xml editor I downloaded and notepad. Still, WTF. They all came up only crazy symbols. Can someone help me out with this?

Problems solved and I got some questions answered. Now onto troubleshooting my mode 23 problems.

What about the immobilizer? May you share the answers you have got? I was told to be aware of overwriting the immobilizer or even my VIN code, if not using EcuFlash properly. Is this applied to Evo X?

I have got the stock rom for the 52860020 at this forum and they are identical (every single byte) to the rom I have downloaded from my car. When I was reading the ECU, some serial number (?) and my VIN appeared at the log window. Will these be overwritten in some way while uploading/writing modified roms (such as those Gunzo, Venti, etc got from this forum) to my car's ecu?

Is there any risk of using a Rom with different EcuId. I have seen some roms with 52860018 over here. May I use them in my 52860020 rom?

Is there any tool for taking two ROM/HEX files and showing their differences already "translated" according to a xml definition file?

After following the tutorial for enabling mode 23, I saved my modified rom and, I have found another region at the rom that got modified besides the 0x23 code. It was at the address 0x000BFFF1. The original content was all FF FF FF, but the saved/modified rom is currently C3 FF EF. Is this some kind of checksum? Will EcuFlash take care of this automatically everytime I write a modified rom?

Thank you,
Best Regards,
Ziki

Your tutorial has been printed, read and followed, as well as others topics at this forum and another. Thank you very much for taking the time to build such an usefull work. But, unfortunately, none of my questions above has been answered. At least, I could not find them.

Btw, if I store modified and original xml files inside the rommetadata folder (as suggested in your tutorial), the ones from the "backup" sub-folder are read before the ones in their the parent folder. This happened in Windows XP, Sp3. I had to store the backup/original and modified xml outside rommetadata folder.

Thank you,
Best regards,

PS. I love Eclipses.

It fine to use other peoples ROM's that are posted it will not do any problems with the immobilizer or the VIN. As long as you followed my tutorial properly you should be alright. Using 52680020 is the newest version of the ROM. So I suggest using that one. I personally like to use the ROM downloaded off my ECU and then modifying it to be on safe side.

If you ever brick your ECU let me know.
