: Insurance for modified vehicles
steelbahamut 10-16-2009, 08:59 PM Does anyone know of a good insurance company that will take care of modified vehicles? I am pretty sure my company wouldnt continue to insure me if they knew all the mods I have.
Edit* I am in Canada
boostin20 10-16-2009, 09:04 PM Most insurance companies will, you just have to request it and it costs extra. I have state farm, and on my x, they will cover whatever I add as long as it's bolted to the car. Read= unlimited amount of money, as long as I produce receipts if something happens. When I had my miata stolen, they paid me a little over $13k for my bolt-ons. I have been with them for 10yrs (probably makes no difference). Food for thought.
steelbahamut 10-16-2009, 09:07 PM I asked one of the reps today, and they said they are not interested in insuring my vehicle if its had any kind of performance altering modifications done to it. The guy sounded like a dick tho, I will try to research into it more.
Domo X 10-16-2009, 09:11 PM ill try to find out for ya

Wow, I've never heard of that. I've stuck with one company, but I've talked to allstate, nationwide, and usaa getting prices and info. They all had options for what I added. I didn't notice you were in Canada at first, that must be the huge difference there.
Excalibur 10-16-2009, 09:44 PM I need to look into this as well. I guess also need to get all my invoices printed out.
steelbahamut 10-16-2009, 10:16 PM I talked with a different lady, she says its on a case by case basis, and wanted a list of my modifications. It doesnt look good tho, and I wont be covered after a turbo swap anyways so I might as well find another plan now.
Domo X 10-16-2009, 10:17 PM if youre in canada, im not sure i can help you there lol
but in most cases, you can always add the mods to your policy.
steelbahamut 10-17-2009, 12:15 AM Not with the company im currently with unfortunately :( Sin referred me to another place, the lady says they should be good with my mods long as I list them all, she will get back to me with a quote on Monday.

livevil 10-17-2009, 11:07 AM My friend is with ing and listed his mods and payed a little extra like Boostin 20 said ... year 1/2 ago i had a claim , and dealt with a couple dicks until i found someone that was finally willing to help me , some people just dont wanna do there job/lazy .
Some companies will if you list the mods for them (as discussed above). Other insurance cos take a more conservative approach and don't focus on the equipment replacement, but instead the perceived increased liability of insuring a crazy fast car that could injure or kill people.
Reveers 10-18-2009, 05:28 AM Just don't tell them.
My car is insured in Manitoba with MPI (Manitoba Public Insurance) and never have they asked about mods or addons while registering the car.
If you are making your car a track-only vehicle you may need a different insurance package but even then I doubt it if you are registering for road use.
Where in Canada are you?
steelbahamut 10-18-2009, 10:34 AM I am in Alberta. Ive asked a couple other places for quotes, will get those early next week.

you do know if you don't tell them and you get into an accident they can 100% deny your claim. It's not up to them to ask it's up to you to report alterations.
steelbahamut 10-19-2009, 08:33 PM ^What he said. I found a place, its actually the same place Sin uses, the awesome thing is my insurance doesnt go up a cent, I get the same benefits I had with my old plan, and they will honor the mods to my car.
TheSin 10-19-2009, 08:35 PM IIRC that is what they did for me too I just had to submit a itemized list of things and make sure to keep them up to date on it and it wasn't a problem, she is a super nice lady too, glad it worked out for you!

Maybe in Alberta but I've never heard of such a thing happening in Manitoba.
TheSin 10-21-2009, 01:04 AM Well I have lived in 3 provinces and in your insurance in all 3 they have a section for that, I'm not saying they will, I'm saying that it states it's the owners responsibility to report and alterations to the insurance company or insurance can be revoked.
steelbahamut 10-27-2009, 02:22 AM Ive moved over to the new insurance provider, service from them was excellent and the whole process was quick and painless. Best thing is I get peace of mind that they will cover my mods, I get the same comprehensive coverage I had with my old provider and it doesnt raise my premium a cent!
COBALT-to-EVO 10-27-2009, 02:28 AM statefarm has a section where you can request modifications and you place the value of them when you sign up. guess you have to alter your agreement if you add more mods.
EdmontonX 10-28-2009, 10:47 PM You can always claim stupidity.
Saying you didnt know aftermarket products increased power.

Excuse me? Who are you?
Anyways, I have had friends who've written off modified cars.
And the insurance company asked why they had aftermarket parts on the car, their excuse "Aftermarket is cheaper then OEM."
Its the same as you having a completely stock car. You write it off, and you can provide receipts for parts put on the vehicle the insurance company will re-imburse (+ depreciation depending on how long theyve been on). It's the exact same with aftermarket parts. Insurance companies are just looking for excuses to cut costs and will look for any excuse.
They're in the mind set that if you have aftermarket parts then you're a street racer. I think if you were to write off your car in an 'at fault' situation, they'd be more apt to look for an excuse to not cover you. But if your car was T-boned. The costs arent coming out of your provider's pockets they're coming out of the 'at fault' parties insurance. So they don't really care, how much they have to pay you because they're being reimbursed.
