And by HDR you mean High deff. resolution? ahah sorry for the rookie question.. I am not the photo guy... High Dynamic Range. Essentially you take 3+ bracketed shots of a subject and then combine them all together in photoshop or other programs.

Can the picture have another car in it? or does it have to be just of our Evo X

It can have another car in it as well, that's fine. However, you must have your X in the picture.

I think there are very few people who know how to do HDR, I sold cameras for three years and barely know what it is. But I will definately give this a try.

MicMcKee
11-03-2009, 11:29 AM
You essentially take 3 (or more pictures) with 3 different exposures...

I normally go +2 0 and -2, all with a tripod so the camera won't move...

Then use a program to merge them together...

http://www.visualphotoguide.com/taking-high-dynamic-range-hdr-photos/

That's a pretty good guide as to do it, the new photoshop can make them too without that program...

legendary_wraps
11-03-2009, 01:50 PM
just remember..... doing an HDR merge is 10X easier if you shoot all your shots from a tripod with a remote.... The everything matches up pixel for pixel....

celica2evo
11-03-2009, 02:01 PM
damn sounds like this contest is not for the camera challenged people!

MicMcKee
11-03-2009, 02:06 PM
Nah, you're going to need a little more than a point/shoot camera for this...

Though it's possible...

I like the challenge, I just don't know if I want the prize...

I'm sure it works for someone, that just wasn't where I was planning on having my gauges...

The reason for the McDonald's Arches in the contest is that we wanted you guys to have taken the pictures this month, as opposed to using something you just had on file. In order to ensure that happened, we had to have some sort of catch. So we decided that there should be something (the arches) that needed to be in the pictures. It needed to be something off the wall, fun, as well as something everyone would be able to get done. :)

I am confused

1. Username
2. Name
3. Your HDR photo will be placed first.
4. Your image with username included will be shown second (*****First picture you post is the picture with your username in it, then the other!*****)

Which goes first, the HDR with the mikky d arches, then username pic, or username pic then HDR photo with mikky d arches.

Most point and shoot cameras today have overrides to their Auto settings. I'll bet if you read the manual you will see you can do it. That being said, I'm not sure I'm photoshop savy enough to do this. But I may just give it a try.

Exactly how close do you have to be to the golden arches???

You dont need a "Crazy ass camera" your standard point and shoot could suffice, and there are programs out there that pretty much make the HDR image for you once you upload the pictures.

If all else fails :googlesign:

I am not mandating you participate, by any means. This is a free giveaway, and every month will have a certain set of guidelines followed. Just like last month was only for MR's, this month you need to know (or find out how to) produce a certain kind of photograph.

You can take a contest like this one of two ways:

1. You don't know how to do it, and don't want to participate. That's cool, but I'd rather see people enter.

2. You know or will learn how to do it, and will participate. Either you gain some experience doing a photo like this, or you learn a new skill. Again, either way, it's excellent to see the results.

But regardless of which route you go, this is **FREE** giveaway. There is no entry fee to the forums nor is there one to participate in the contest. With that said any restrictions that I place on a given months contest won't be lifted. I try to make every month different, fair, as well as try to hit or target a different group of people that can participate. Some months, anyone can. Others, there may be limitations. It's all based around a few things:

1. What the item is that is being sponsored for the given months contest.

2. What the sponsoring vendor want to see in that months contest, as they are providing items worth several hundred, if not thousands of dollars.

3. What have been the contest guidelines in months past.

4. Is there a certain restriction on who could use said item? I don't want someone to turn around and sell what they win, but would much rather see them use the item with their car. Just like last month's contest, it would have just been silly to give an SST Clutch Pack to a GSR owner, all he would do is turn around and sell it.

If there is a month that you are not able to participate, sit back, relax, enjoy the entries from those that are participating and wait for the next month.

Whitewind, or anyone else, you really don't need a fancy camera. It's just a post processing method.

If you, or anyone else, wants to enter without an HDR processed image, I'm willing to do the processing for you. Ideally you want a bracketed shot (low exposure - normal - high exposure), but I can easily whip up a pseudo-HDR for you from a single decent photo.

No need to feel excluded from something that is relatively simple.

Here you go.

Here's a quick (read: not hand adjusted) idea of what can be done. I went with extremes, just to give an example. It is a very poor quality original image, so keep that in mind. HDR should bring out detail, not catch artifacts ;) Also, this is pseudo-HDR, the actual stuff turns out better. If you send the actual original (full size, good quality), it can actually be substantially better. I usually don't like extremes, but with this image, I just wanted to show what can be done.

it's HDR. Some cameras have bracketing features where the camera takes 3 exposures at once.

Alright, I knew it had to be something like that. It looked too good to be photoshopped.

For all of you who dont want to spend a lot of time editing and what not, Photomatix Pro has preset modifications to your HDR, and it is free, If you dont want to spend the time learning what gamma and shadow concentration or the likes mean, use this program, it will do the work for you.

I'll take the trade because I am so tired of sweating all the time. It's 82 degrees today and if not for Ida making it so windy it would be a muggy 82 degrees. It's two weeks from thanksgiving and I'm sweating. there's just something wrong there. Last month I went to NC/SC/Tenn area and it was a steady 50-60 degres and I was walking around in a t-shirt. That would be perfect weather for me. Plus the air was so crisp and clean... Now I'm back in a city that was built on a SWAMP!! :duh:

Fuckin creepy.... is this where you keep the children that get in the van?

Seriously though I love the Photomatix program that does these and I am thinking about buying it. It is so easy to combine and manipulate the HDRs its fing beautiful. Plus you can batch process to get an idea of what ones to use. The program is $100 and can be put on multiple computers in the same studio. So I figure we are studio EvoX and if people want to chip in Ill get a copy.

PM me if your interested  or if you already have the program and would like to have someone to share the licenseing fee with.

I took some shots the other night but was still not familiar with how to get the photo's until I did some research. I created the pic above after using bracketing mode on my camera then loading those three shots into photomatix.

I need to get some day shots at Mcdonalds. My night shots didn't turn out so well.

To Quote the rules

Contest Requirements:
~Each contestant must submit two pictures. The first will be an HDR photo of your X that includes the McDonald's arches in it. The second will be a photo of your X accompanied by a handwritten sign showing your User Name and Date.
~This months contest is open to both GSRs and MRs.

It says you must have the McDonald's arches in it. It doesn't say you have to be at McDonald's. It's just a reference to make sure it is a recent pic taken for the purpose of the contest. Also, I did take some pics at a McDonald's and they were crap!:wallbash:

Nohan nailed it.

I like the crisp quality. I know what you're saying about being cartoonish, and it is a cool effect, but can be over done imo.
It can be over done but if you can find a happy medium then you wil be set. I think that medium is in between yours and Justins

someone should get a large vinyl sticker of the "m" and slap it on the car for this photo shoot..lol

These HDR's make me cry.

A good HDR is barely surreal.

I agree with Fishstix on that. There is a misconception of what HDR images really are.

You consider that having McDonald's in the picture?

Man up and go shoot in front of the building while all the fatties go in and out wondering wtf you're doing.

I agree with Fishstix on that as well, but it doesn't say anywhere in the rules that you have to get the arch "sign" which makes it ambiguous as to where you can take the image. I think it would be more fun if you had to get the McDonalds sign, not just a box of fries in front of the car (that makes it a little more challenging and therefore more fun in my book ).

Either way I went out and took a picture of my car like I understood the contest to be, with the arches of the McDonalds sign on the background. This is just for show since I can't participate on another contest until July 2010 and I won that one :yay:.

Thanks for the complement. I can imagine someone checking it out and going, "Oh, that's a cool picture. Wait, what the hell? Why does it have McDonald's arches on the windshield?"

I had a girl leave me a note on my car on a McDonald's bag,

So it's not out of the realm of possibility...

I really like this shot!

Just one thing that wouldn't make it my top choice is that there isn't enought "car" in the picture. The backround view and all is amazing but it would of been killer if you just went back a little more and added in atleast half the rear end and a taillight or something. Other than that i love the pic!

Yeah once you see them both the first one submitted is a better shot. I updated the "official Apex silver" thread with the rest of the pics I took today.

I probably won't be voting for anything with a Photomatrix water mark. Photomatrix makes the worst, unrealistic HDR if not done right and so far they all look abnormally over done.

Honestly how many images is everyone using to make their HDR's?

If I could find my adobe CS2 I wouldn't need the photomatix program. I used bracketing and used three pics I think ranging from -7 to +7.

I used 5 photos and I only used Photomatix because its the only program I could find that would accept Canon's RAW image files. The program can do a wide range of tone mapping, without making the image look too cartoonish. Example below if you dont use the tone mapping features to POP the color or give some depth to highlights and shadows it just looks like a high depth photo.

Oh way to go. Love to see people doing it the "non Photomatrix way". HDR use to be art...now it's a gimmick to make "great looking photos" with people using drag and drop programs...

But that is the point of HDR to make it an even higher quality photo by brightening shadows and darkening over exposed areas. Not making it all about who used a program more...

Sorry but your photo is way too bright and over done for me to consider it as art and an HDR.

This is not my best work as I forgot to turn automatic focus off and it had issues auto focusing, this is just to show what I belive HDR should be...

I can agree with this. It is interesting to see the various ways people manipulate HDRs. I don't like when it's overly manipulated & you get the little grainy effect though :(

Here are the original 3 photos I used, merged, then messed with the curves & did some sharpening (the final photo I entered is on the bottom). & the sky & background buildings were manipulated separately from the foreground & my X (the lamp post took a while to edit too). This was on a cloudy & cold day too, btw. First time doing HDR! :dancebanana:
