: Another Ricer Idea; Vortex Generators in front of SST cooler

i noticed the new STI's have vg's inside the hood scoop over the intercooler. im wondering if it would do anything if i put some kind of vg's in front of the cooler right on the opening in the bumper skin.

What would be the point of this?

maybe this may help prolong the time til i get the slowdown message at lapping days

I have yet to see this senseless act. The minute I do I will point and laugh as hard as I can.

:yeahthat:

A VG doesn't increase flow or magically lower air temps. It helps a car to drive straight at high speeds. I highly doubt it will do anything to lower your transmission temps. A good trans cooler and as open a flow as possible are the key.

Yep.

Do you have the SSP transmission cooler with deep pan?

no, i wish i did. i didn't think this would really do much, but when i saw the hood scoop of the new STI it got me thinking, thanks for the info.

cool idea but it wont work. any extra item lowering flow or pressure in the air (ie a VG) will reduce cooling but honestly i doubt you would ever notice a difference with or without them.

Vorex generators are used to induce controlled air turbulence. This turbulence can cause the air to slow down, which in some instances is a good thing. They also can be used to controll lateral (laminar) airflow. Neither of these things is necessary for either the trans, or the engine oil coolers. Because of the fact that the area they are mounted cannot vent the air as fast as it comes in, in effect the airflow through this area is already slowed.
You would be better off coming up with some kind of duct work if you wanted to increase the flow to the coolers, preventing the air that enters the inlet from going around the cooler. I don't see a need for this though in all but the most extreme track conditions. Like perhaps an endurance race in Death Valley in August.

i can only do like 15 laps at a time in the summer. i cant afford the nice stuff from SSP

Then you need to save up or figure out a cost-effective solution. Otherwise, with an auto transmission you'll have to continuously deal with heat build-up.

It helps a car to drive straight at high speeds.

:duh: This is incorrect. Vortex generators are used to re-energize the boundary layer to help abate flow separation, in turn reducing lift/drag.

:+1: i.e. why you commonly see them on the top surface of an aircraft wing.

just using "sport" mode helps a lot with the cooling, but "s-sport" is more fun. doing this seems to be a good option

We have a sale on our Pro Red fluid, which lowers the fluid temps by ten degrees with the oem cooler :D

i think when i change the fluid in my SST, ill use that, maybe ill get your filter too. just wish the wife would let me get the deep oil pan and better cooler. you still have some rear-mounted coolers in stock, right? was hoping maybe you'd discount those to get rid of 'em. told me you're phasing them out and focusing on the front-mounted ones.

I just went with the stage 1 kit, and fluid. Didn't get the cooler, or pan. Had I known that I'd be working for SSP a month later.....obviously I would've got the pan too. Yes we have the rear mount coolers in stock, but I'm not sure about fazing those out. I'll send Kris an Email and I'll let you know.
