Can I get them done even if they are outside of my warranty?

I think you can get TSB's done outside warranty.. call your dealer and ask?

My car is sitting at the dealership... I wanted to be able to have a strong arguement before I try and get them to do work for free. I'll call them soon and ask if I don't find an answer.

"And, of course, the best thing about finding a TSB that seems to cover a persistent problem in your vehicle is that dealerships will make the repair for free, provided that

Your vehicle is under warranty;
Your service advisor and/or technicians are able to confirm that the problem exists. The second mandate is not to be taken lightly, Chirico warned. Even if your vehicle is within the warranty period, "the dealership is not going to do anything about it, if [technicians] cannot verify the concern.... The manufacturer pays for the repair, not the dealership, and the dealership has to treat the manufacturer like a customer.... The service writer can't write up an invoice with just the TSB number and expect the manufacturer to pay for the procedure."

I'm finding mixed information on the answer to this..

No remember the A/C smell? Well thats a TSB and the blinking 2 on the dial. While my car was heavily modded I didnt want to take it and end up black listed.

yeah the flickering light is DEFINITELY a tsb, one I never got fixed when under warranty (87k miles now w00t).

A TSB is just a procedure for fixing a common issue with a car. Unlike a recall, it doesn't pertain to a safety issue so they aren't at all obligated to fix it for free post-warranty. If you have a good rapport with your dealer (ha! who does? dealerships are the worst) they may do it if it's something small. The part for the a/c flickering.. well that's ~180 dollars of parts (at discounted price) so it's not very likely. Whatever you do, don't leave it on 2 or whichever numbers are flickering for you! The compressor is actually turning on and off when that light flickers. I don't want to know the long term effects of that :P

question.. when I turn my AC from position 1 to 2, it sometimes flickers just the one time while i'm moving it..
Chris.. are you saying not to leave it in position 2?

Yeah, your car smells like headaches.

What blinking 2?

Be glad you have an 01 I guess. It's an 02-02.5 problem. The a/c light flickers on the 2nd setting, then eventually it'll do it on 3 too. The a/c light for me is just totally off on position 1 now (not that I have A/C).

problem isn't the light, it's that it's actually kicking the compressor on and off. It was fixed in later models but well.. how many 03.5 Protege5s or MSPs do you see at junkyards? one of these days I'll buy the part :P

Mine does it in both 2 and 3, but 3 less often the 2. I acutally replaced my last one with an MP3 one and it still has the problem. Oh well I need to get to a upull it yard see if theres anything good.

I need some interior pieces and a rear seatbelt.

Oh yes and the dealer did said basicly what Kansei said... no dice on the free fix.

See I've never even been to a dealership for service and I know these things :P

only time I ever touched the dealership was when my rear fenders were rusting pretty badly (and oh hey, look at that, they're doing it again). The level of service made it quite clear that Modern Motors Mazda in Thomaston, CT doesn't give a damn about their customers after they rope them in. Yeah let's just sand off the obvious bubbles and spray the fender (without taping anything.. so it was all up in the wheelwell, on my tokicos, and even on my tires.

And I agree I would never take my car to the dealer but my mechanic decided he could make better money doing long distance trucking. At least I have the slimmest margin of accountability.
