: Rattleling when letting off gas

Ive been noticing a rattleling sound when you depress the gas on the higher gears, typically in 4th and 5th, i can hear it in the other gears but 4th and 5th seems to be the most present. Like if you were going 50mph and you let go of the gas and decel. It almost sounds like my s2000 when i put an ACT clutch in it and the clutch disk springs would rattle on decel. Im on stock clutch btw. If anyone of you guys are still on stock clutch and go drive your car with the windows up and music completely off, and see if this happens to you and let me know i would really be thankful. Any of you guys experiencing this?????

does it seem to come from the gearbox or the gear lever section?

also can you see the gear stick move when you come off the accelerator?

hhmmm. I cant really tell where the noise comes from. I kind of just assumed based on my past experience with the S2K. I also havent looked at the gear stick but im pretty sure i doesnt move, being that i hold it on decel some times and i dont feel any movement, but im goin to double check that for you today.

Are you running stock exhaust?

felibon

Yeah, stock exhaust.
Mods:
-Cone filter on factory exhaust.
-Wastegate mod, turned 3 times
-restrictor pill from clutch master cylinder.

I had rattling and it ended up being a heat shield.

^^ thats wat i assumed it was or aftermarket exhaust hitting drivetrain but since ur running the stock exhaust that cant be the case.... hmm...

yeah......... this is so weird. I did take off the heatshield in the engine bay to do the wastegate mod, but i just started noticing it lately. None of you guys have experienced this on the stock clutch? I dont know why but im inclining more on something to do with the drivetrain.

Mine would only do it during certain driving conditions, rpms, etc
I too thought it was the drivetrain.

Mine does it too-- stock as a rock. It's typically when letting off the gas in 4th gear and it rattles like an SOB. I can tell it's in the engine bay closer to the firewall and yes it does sound like the heat shield or another thin metal vibrating. When I take it out of gear it's quiet.

Does it rattle at idle when you blip the throttle?
Kind of sound like you dragging metal?
Is there any smoke when you let off the throttle from a hard 3rd gear pull?

Yup, sounds just like what i have going on. If you also notice, the rattling goes way if you press on the clutch too. So it goes away when you let go of the gas and/or if you press the clutch. Mine doesnt rattle very loud though, it seems like yours is way more loud than mine. I havent actually removed the heatshield for the exhaust manifold but i did notice that you can slide the shield around even though the bolts are tight AS HELL. Im going to try to remove the shield tomorro and see if i can rule that one out. Does your shield slide around too?

No, i dont think i have notice the rattlign when i blip the throttle at idle. I can check though. I also dont think im draggin metal because i was under the X just 2 or 3 days ago changing my oil and i didnt see anything hanging. About the smoke, now thats a good question, ill have to get a buddy to go behind me and check it out for me. What would it be if i was smoking when you let off the throttle at a hard 3rd gear pull?

I didnt mean that you may actually be dragging metal but its usally what people think when they hear a turbo bearing going out. The sound is from the firewall and gcan be heard best just after you get off the throttle in higher gears. You can pull off your intake and turbo inlet and if the impellar moves you have bearing issues. Its already happened to one stock car that I know of on here.

Damn, i hope thats not it..... So i went to take the exhaust manifold shield off and drove the car and it still makes the sound  I really hope that i dont have turbo issuses now.... This sucks.

Have you done any mods to your car before this happened or any other work on it?

I have a cone intake and the wastegate turned 3 times. Thats all. The thing is that i dont know if this started before or after. I just happend to notice the noise one day at like 3 in the morning with the windows up and the stereo off. I turned the car on today (cold start, first time i turn it on today) after taking the mani shield off and there is absolutely no rattling what so ever. Ive been reading for the last hour about bad turbo bearings and the noises all happen on turbo spool up, not on decel.

I had one got out and I only heard the noise on decel and idle after it got worse. Its east to see if it is just have to pull the intake back to the turbo and the three bolts out of the inlet and just put one finger on it and jiggle. If it moves at all thats your issue and takes about 15 minutes to confirm or eliminate that issue.

Yeah, i guess thats going to be the next step. How loud was your rattling though? Could you hear it all the time at idle? and did you hear it while driving even with the windows down and the radio on? What can cause this to fail prematurely? I keep reading that ball bearing turbos are the most tough and long lasting. Sorry for so many question but im so frustrated man.

So it was the heat shield then?

Nope, I meant that at idle there is no rettling, but when i drove without the shield it still rattling. So its not the shield, its something else. I till believe it has something to do with the drivetrain. I dont know why but i do. It can also be nothing. I dont know. Im just hoping more people post up and see if they have the samething. I think we should move this to engine forum so that more people see it?

You might want to check the heatshielding guiding the downpipe to see if there is rubbing there. I was getting rattling there from one of my dump pipes. I know your car is not modded, but that is where I had rattling with my car it might be worth a look.

Nice amount of replies now.. to further elaborate my situation:

My car ONLY makes the noise when I let off mainly in 4th gear. Like when I bring it up to 4k or 5k in gear and then simply take my foot off the gas.. THAT'S when I hear the rattling.

As far as the smoke.. don't get me started. My car is 100% stock-- 16,200 miles. Had the dealer ECU update done along with the other recalls. But from day one this car spits out smoke when boost kicks in. It's like a puff when it fully spools but then I don't see anything else. Regardless it's embarrassing and I broke the car in like a complete baby for it's first 1,000 miles like people on here recommended.

Hi

I am driving EVO X sst (MR). I have the same exact sound like yours...

At first I suspected it to be the brake pad in the rear wheels.. nope!! Is not the brake pad.

Then I check thru my undercarriage... springs, struct bar.. anti-roll sway bar.. loose bolts and nuts... like what other bro would recommend us to check.. nope!! no luck.. all nut/bolts are secured!!

Now I am suspecting it s the design of the car.... it is a AWD car afterall... so the AYC-ADC gearing reacted with some kind of sound during slow speed (for my case) and also let go gas padel... I cant really reproduce it all the time...

It is about 20% of the time/ on bumpy road sometime can reproduce the sound...

I am not giving up.. i am going to check the rear seat back panel!! i read somewhere in other forums that the plastic might be the culprit despite we are pretty sure it is a metal to metal sound...

Hope I shed some light to u... I am still searching for an answer for this.

Cheers.
Dennis

I believe the manual directly addresses this. I have a brand new stock evo only 1400 miles and I get this also. I wondered about it. I will have to check my manual if I can find the spot but I believe it is perfectly normal and part of the Active Stability Control system.

Edit Later --->

Here is what I found. "When ASC is activated, you may feel a vibration in the vehicle body or hear a whining sound from the engine compartment". 3-127

Sounds like it's not it but it might be.

I was in a panic on the way home just now because I had a sound, a really loud one that sounded just as described in this thread. Took a video to share the sound with you guys and everything. I was hoping you'd be able to tell me what it was. While the video was loading though I decided to get under my car and look. It sounded like the sound was coming from right below my feet, so that's where I started.

And guess what I found, a stick wedged up in there.

It was really weird. The sound only happened when I was just coasting. I was giving it a lot of gas and the sound would go away. I would let off the gas and the sound would show up. Needless to say I was happy after I took the stick out and the sound went a way.

Guess I was a little panic-y pete.

Yeah, after a while i just ended up ignoring it. If the windows are down and the radio on i wont hear the rattling. Just so everyone knows, my rattling is not the shifter cable like other people have mentioned. I checked. The rattling is still there but im not worried about it. The car drives fine. I just think its the clutch springs rattling. I have a GSR by the way.

Haha, no. It was just a stick wedged up my car right below my feet. Once I took the stick out the sound went away.

No ticket
