: Cold Weather Whine/Siren Noise
Guys, for the past few days it's been ~-15deg. here in Calgary and my MR has developed a semi-loud whining/siren noise until it is fully warmed up. It happens between 2k-2.5k rpm, and is present whether i'm on or off throttle at that rpm range.
I have let it warm up until I see a line appear in the temp gauge, but the sound is still present for a few stop lights/stop signs until its fully warmed.
I know Weebles has posted that he had this issue with his car as well, just wondering if any others have this occur during cold snaps?
It almost sounds like a faint siren a few blocks away, thats the best way I can describe it... Anyone else have this issue? Seems like some of us do, some cars don't. Wondering what it could be.
bradze 12-31-2009, 09:26 PM ive not had that problem, but it doesn't get near as cold in WA
castoh1 01-01-2010, 05:10 PM I've had mine since October, also in Calgary, and haven't noticed any type of high pitched noises. My car is kept in a heated garage though so it hasn't really been kept out in the cold to warm up.
MicMcKee 01-01-2010, 05:12 PM I've had some weird sounds since it's gotten cold,
They go away when it warms up so I haven't worried...
steelbahamut 01-01-2010, 05:50 PM Swing by if your ever up in Edmonton, we can go for a ride.
Cataclysm 01-01-2010, 05:54 PM Are we talking turbo whine? Friends of mine have thought they heard distant sirens, then I had to inform them it's from the turbo. It is more prominent when the car is cold.
RallyReX08 01-01-2010, 06:06 PM I have a couple of whining noises I am keeping an eye on, one seems to be the alternator whining with engine rpm when cold started, then goes away somewhat when warm; the other sounds almost like tranny whine, but does it at a stop also, and when warm, revving a little, similar to a siren your describing...I am starting to think it is the same issue with the interference in the Rockford unit but even I can't tell, and do this for a living....hope someone figures this out!!!

Is there a fix for the Rockford interference or just deal with it?
RallyReX08 01-01-2010, 06:32 PM Is there a fix for the Rockford interference or just deal with it?
I think the grounds for the unit have to be relocated, but don't know where to be exact, the dealer would know but I HATE taking it there, I might as well let my 13 yr old cousin do it for me..lol
MicMcKee 01-01-2010, 07:24 PM Haha yeah I know what you mean,
Are you talking about the internal grounds (inside the cabin)?
I'm starting to think its the transmission as well... Since it is most prominent at low speeds where 1st and 2nd are engaged at the same time. It also goes away completely once the car is warmed up.
It sounds very similar to the tranny whine in my Suby, only in that car, it was present regardless of ambient temperature or vehicle temps.
I'm not worried, just thought it was interesting that temperature seems to have a huge effect on the SST (I'd be curious to know what the viscosity of the transmission oil is).
Cataclysm 01-01-2010, 08:24 PM Diaqueen is pretty thin stuff, hence the introduction of two competing, heavier service transmission oils in the aftermarket. I don't think we would fair well in winter with either of those options.
RallyReX08 01-02-2010, 01:45 PM Haha yeah I know what you mean,
Are you talking about the internal grounds (inside the cabin)?
Yeah:godance:
MicMcKee 01-02-2010, 01:46 PM Sweet, might tackle that today...
It's been driving me insane...
Reveers 01-02-2010, 02:08 PM Check your alternator belt and see if it is loose and might be slipping?
I've seen plenty of cars on a cold winter day start up and for the first 5 minutes screech horribly as if it were being cut open with a rusty spoon and all it is is a loose alternator belt.
xPRimNT 01-02-2010, 02:23 PM It's just the car being damn cold.
You should hear my GSR on start up, it sounds like it is about to lift off! Nothing to worry about, just let the car warm up before driving, as we all should be doing anyway.
weebles 01-03-2010, 01:58 AM Are we talking turbo whine? Friends of mine have thought they heard distant sirens, then I had to inform them it's from the turbo. It is more prominent when the car is cold.
It's this.
My car does it too, but now my exhaust is too loud so I can't hear it anymore.
When the turbo is cold it whines like a siren during spool (sounds like one of them euro ambulances or something) once it warms up you no longer hear it.
Reveers 01-03-2010, 02:08 AM Yeah you shouldn't really be in boost that much until it warms up better anyways.
Just strange that the turbo makes noise when spooling UP or winding DOWN... But once past 3.5k rpm and up, when its making full boost, it makes no sound whatsoever.
This is why I thought it may have been the transmission itself.
xPRimNT 01-03-2010, 05:10 AM Hmm, I reread that again. Maybe I don't have that, mine is more just a startup thing when it is really cold.

Hmm you already hearing noises again huh. Do you smell burning chicken feathers as well. J/K bad movie joke no one probably remembers.
I guess i'm just super noise sensitive with my vehicles Cam :) Hahah.
LIGHTSPD 01-03-2010, 08:34 PM As long as you don't smell burning chicken feathers all is ok LOL
evox44 01-03-2010, 09:30 PM I thought it was the intake making that noise. I get that as well and would like to find if there is a problem with it. However as XPrimt said, +1, I too think it's just the car being cold. After a few minutes when it is warmed up, the noise goes away.
Cataclysm 01-03-2010, 09:41 PM It's the intake/turbo. It happens in all gears, and pitch varies with throttle input.
skylineguv 01-03-2010, 11:33 PM Took the wife's car out for a run today for the first time in around a month and it made the same sort of noise.....most definitely turbo in this case.
Thanks guys, glad to know its not just my car :)
Demon X 01-10-2010, 05:23 PM i have the same noice on my 08 evo x... i just change the tranny fluid for royal purple fluid 75w-90 and the noice still in there,bt the gears go in smotherd them b4.. the noice is less now, bt still bothers me lol.. i think is the wheather and im gona wait till summer comes and see if the noice goes away..
Demon X 01-17-2010, 01:19 PM That Noise Is Getting Worst I Guess Bcuz Sometimes I Can Heard A Clikin Noise... What Should I Do??? The Guys At The Dealer Told Me That I Have To Wait Till This Guy From Mitsu Comes To The Dealer And That He Only Comes Ones A Moth... They Also Told Me That He Has To Deside If That Is Cover Under Warranty, Bcuz The Damages Might Be More Then 500$.. And Evertime This Happens They Have To Let That Guy Kno About It...
contagius 01-19-2010, 04:36 PM My car will have a whine on startup after -15 or -20 C for about 10 to 15 seconds. Any colder than that I have to have it plugged in or my command start will not work. If it isn't plugged in I need to go out and start it manually and the whining just grates on my nerves till it goes away. No whining when I'm driving tho unless I'm with wifey then the whining is non stop. hahahaaaaaa
Doesn't seem to be temperature related actually, it does it even in our current conditions of +5-10C for the first minute or two of driving.
Taking it in for the newest TSB/Recalls this week, i'll have Chindian take a look while he has the car.
weebles 01-19-2010, 04:49 PM Mine did it in the summer time mornings too (10c or 20c) 20c for something that operates at over 200c is 'cold' ;)

Hassan 02-09-2010, 06:46 AM Maybe changing the oil from 5w30 to 0w30 will solve the problem! Make sure when it gets warm again change it back to regular 5w30
Calgarylancer1 02-09-2010, 06:58 AM im running motul 75w-90 and motul 5w-30x-max and in -40 she starts with no noises
