HOW TO INSTALL FACTORY NAVIGATION UNIT INTO NON-NAV EVO 10

Please note that any work you do on your own may void your warranty so do so at your own risk and only if you know what you're doing!

Level of diffilculty from 1-10 (1 being easy): 3

PARTS NEEDED:
NAVIGATION INSTALL KIT Part # MZ360180EX or MZ360192EX (same part) Comes with everything you see in the first picture.

NAVIGATION UNIT Part # MZ360141EX OR MZ360151EX (same part)

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/Picture%20050.jpg

TOOLS NEEDED:
PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER (yes, thats it!)

STEPS:
1) Remove the negative terminal from the battery in the trunk

2) Remove glovebox by squeezing the sides towards each other. As the glovebox starts to drop down, take note to the right side of it, there is an airshock attached to it.
Remove that by pulling towards the drivers side. Now the entire glovebox should drop down on its hinge. Pull towards you to remove.

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00487.jpg

3) Remove 1 phillips screw and pull the outermost trim off to expose yet another phillips screw

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00489.jpg

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00491.JPG

4) Remove that 1 phillips screw that holds the dash trim in place.

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00492.jpg

5) Start pulling on the dash trim carefully (but with good force) starting from the right (passenger side) and working your way towards the center of the dash.

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00493.jpg

6) With the trim removed, you should now see the radio bezel along with the hazard lights, etc... (you do not need to remove the hazard switch since the install kit comes with a new switch.)

7) Carefully start pulling on the radio bezel from the lower corners and working your way up. The bezel is only held in by clips as well.... Be careful not to scratch your dash as you get closer to the top.

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00499.JPG

8) With bezel free from the dash, unclip the harness from the hazard switch and completely remove.
Now, you should be able to see the double din head unit thats hidden behind the pretty dash bezel. (it is held by 4 phillips screws).

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00500.jpg

* Notice the "unused" Harness held up by blue electrical tape... You will need to free this harness to plug into the back of the nav unit

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00502.jpg

9) Remove the 4 phillips screws and pull the double-din unit towards you exposing the 2 harnesses plugged into the back along with the antenna wire. Go ahead, unclip those and take out the radio

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00504.jpg

10) Now its time to install the new Nav unit! From the install kit, the first thing we will need to install is the GPS antenna. It is mounted inside the dash on the top. Look at the bracket and look
at inside the void. It is held by two screws (also included in the install kit)

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00515.jpg

11) At this point, you want to begin to assemble the Nav unit with the remnants of the install kit. Take the nav unit and mount it to the metal bracket that comes with the kit using 4 metric screws (re-used from the original radio

12) attach the harness that comes with the kit to the metal bracket.

13) Look inside, there should be a harness that is unused taped with blue tape. Take that out. That will be the third harness you need for the nav unit

-----OPTIONAL STEP----------

(At this point, its up to you if you want to install a backup camera. I did it because I only wanted to take apart my dash ONCE... and figured, why not? See below for optional steps for the rearview camera)

----END OPTIONAL STEP-------

14) Plug the three harnesses to the harness from the install kit (its idiot proof so the harnesses will match up)

15) Plug the GPS harness to the nav unit

16) Plug the radio antenna plug to the nav unit

17) Carefully position the nav unit into the dash and mount with 4 screws (provided)

18) Locate the new double-din bezel that comes with the install kit, PLUG the hazard switch and then carefully snap it into the dash.

19) Now, re-assemble the dash using the steps in reverse from steps 7 through 1

20) Reconnect the negative to the battery, and voila! Install should be complete!

21) Make an appt with your local dealer to program the nav unit with their MUT-III scantool. (Should only take 10 minutes but dealer may charge you 1hrs labor at the max.... or free if you have a nice dealer)

OPTIONAL: REAR BACKUP CAMERA
I decided to use the Pioneer universal back-up camera ND-BC2. I got it new on Ebay for $150 or so....

to be continued.... stay tuned!!!

Does the kit include the steering wheel piece? I was told that without this, there is no way to make or receive a call as there are no controls on the MMCS, which I find hard to believe.

No, the navi install kit does not include the bluetooth steering wheel piece. I had to order that separately from the bluetooth kit and the navi install kit. I have the part number at home, which ill post here and on the bluetooth how-to thats coming soon!

Max images that can be displayed per post is now doubled to 24.

Also, I created a How-To forum in Evo X as well as Lancer Common. With the exception of the battery location, could this writeup go into Lancer Common when it's finished?

Great work so far.

Price on Parts? Pretty Please!!
As that would predict my options on a GSR or GSR w/ Nav

:shades:

Found the price.
Price is about 2.4K plus shipping. (with mounting kit)

I think is better to buy the option with the car. If you get invoice will be only 1.6K

well, if you're paying full retail, the Nav unit is around $1999.00 usd. The install kit is around $450 USD. Thats full MSRP.

I got the kit for $350-ish and the nav.. well i found a used one on Ebay... =)

If you havent purchased your X yet, I strongly recommend getting the nav factory installed. Note i said "factory"... not "dealer" installed.

its only $2000 for the complete nav from the factory.

Question here if you can answer it ..

The 3 connector that hooks up to the Mitsubishi unit .. I guess that one communicates with the car??

Is this available in aftermarket head units then??
If this is then I can hook it to alot more choices.. I just need to get the harness kit ..

thanks

OK .. Can you explain why it needs to be sent to an agent for flashing ??

Sorry .. I'm trying to see if I can fit a USDM MMCS to a JDM car .. sole purpose is for setting the ETACS and nothing else ..I'm very sure the lame dealers here will have no idea how to do such things ..

I am thinking of installing a carputer it may end up costing cheaper or the same thing for a lot more bang for my buck.

so if I would get the install kitMZ360180EX I wanted to know what size is the opening for the actual NAV UNIT?

also I guess that would not work with the sterring wheel control anymore ? but maybe something can be arranged

Hey Man.

I also did this with my GSR today but I have 1 issue, my Sirius isnt showing up. I'm thinking i just need to take it in and program it with the scantool but im not 100% sure.

Did you get your Sirius working?

Great post btw, hehe the GPS part was alot of fun to get in at night.

Thanks

I know dealers might charge differently but How much have people paid to set up the MMCS with the MUT-III?

SuBXeR0
12-11-2009, 09:08 AM
what is the purpose of getting the dealer to set up the MMCS with MUT-III? also with the 2010 models that already come with bluetooth controls w/o navi, what would happen if i install an AVIC navi on a non navi equiped X. With the bluetooth controls still work? thats my main concern, i would like to just go with an aftermarket installation from non-factory, but i dont want to lose my bluetooth contols

I wonder if any of you know where the speed sensor wire is located at and what's the wire color? I'm planning on installing a Pioneer in dash navigation. Thanks much ! :)

if it helps, I just installed the mmcs into my 2010 SSS gsr and my steering wheel bluetooth controls as well as the stereo controls still work the same

not sure about an aftermarket unit obviously

I DID NOT GO TO THE DEALER...I just installed it and turned the car on

I'm guessing you need to unplug the battery so you don't short out the radio/nav when removing/installing...?
