Funny, but I have the short shifter, heavy knob, and my biggest complaint, and only in the cold is the 1-2 shift. Really tough sometimes to shift into 2nd from 1st. 2-3 is like butter............

1-2 is tough sometimes in the cold, but 2-3 is a bit of crunch... Haven't changed the fluid yet...

I think i prob have one of the worst of the lot. 1-3 gears are all notchy with the worst being my 2nd gear where i get locked out of on coldish days. and even when completely warmed up i get a grinding-like noise when i shift hard from 1st to 2nd at higher RPMs. and then some times i'll be babying it into 2nd but its stuck half way in and it again makes these grind-like noises. changed the transmission oil twice with amsoil at 2500 miles and 7700 miles.

2nd and 3rd is common. For the first few minutes of driving shift really slow and "feel" the gear go in, just lightly push. After it warms up after a few minutes shift fast. After the tranny fluid is warmed up I shift QUICK and never have a problem. I only have problem when I shift slow(once the tranny is warmed up).

double clutch -- very rarely have this issue, even with cold tranny fluid

...i hope you meant tranny fluid changed at 10k, not motor oil .. i haven't changed my oil in about 3k miles (and 3 months) and when I checked the dipstick at the gas station, OMG was it DIRTY!! gunna change it as soon as the temperature isn't below freezing!

I can't speak for the others with "Grinding" in 2nd gear. But the Grinding that i get in 2nd gear is definitely not the dog teeth of the synchros gridining. I know this cuz i have grinded my gears before. for example when you shift with out disengaging the clutch its a very harsh high pitched sound and it comes from the tranny. but the grind-like noise i get sounds more low and muted. And it sounds like it is coming form the gear lever area. Does any of the other ppl w/ 2nd Gear "grind" know what am i talking about? or is it just me?

I bought my evo used from a dealer, it had 5,100 miles when I bought it (a week ago) the car now has 5,800 miles and since then I have been scared to shift from 2nd to 3rd. It has a notch in it. My gears dont grind once so ever and sometimes is goes into 3rd with ease.. other times its not like butter but I dont have to force it either and id say 4 out of 10 times I feel the notch. So I went ahead and got the AMS console and hood bushing along with the gate selecter bushings. This helped ALOT it def helped, but the notchyness isnt gone either.. still needs improvement. I'm OCD about my car and I take care of my car like crazy so being I got it used I has ALL the fluids changed. Because I didnt know what kind of oil the dealer put in.. or the prev owner I wasnt going to take a chance. So I had the transmission,t case, engine, and diff fluids changed. This made the car run smoother and the shifting improved as well. I had Motul Chron 10W40 put in and diaqueen put in the trans and diff. I know lots of ppl on here are getting grinding and notchyness with their evo and I know some people have solved their problem. My question is HOW? This notch prevents me from pushing this car to its full potential and its annoying lol. I have only used diaqueen in the trans.. I called AMS and they said Redline is what they use.. I think ill give it a try and I realize that someone elses solution may not work for me because of climate and other things.. I also noticed eratic idle and misfire or hesitation in high RPMS I went to mitsu and had the reflash TSB taken care of and I think im good to go now. I have been running around this past week doing mateneince on this car and I just wanna take care of this 3rd gear notch. I also have the green relay in the mail to me too.. I also had my mechanic check the FPR lines and they are nice and secure.. so i guess im asking you guys if everything Im doing is right so far? and if I should be doing anything else or if i missed something tell me. im gonna give redline a try but im gonna give diaqueen a few more days. I heard 2qts Redline MTL and 1qt MT-90 works wonders.. amsoil I hear mixed things. any info/input would be great guys.

Thanks!

You installed all 3 in your sig? After just the gate selector it helped out my 2-3 troubles. Didn't SOLVE, but helped.

I have the other two (base + under hood) shifter bushings still in their packages...

Like I said it helped but it isn't gone. Is there an additive I can put in the transmission ?

sigh... still no fix for the "notchyness" I think I might make a trip to the dealer.. I did everything possible to fix this.. the only thing left to do is try another fluid other than diaqueen... Im in denial that there is something wrong with my car or the syncros.. but ill deal with it if it needs to be fixed.. I still get notch-crunch when going fro 2nd to 3rd.. im so fukin pissed right now I was raged on the way home 5 mins ago.. 30,000 car. POFFFTTTTT junk yard time.

Bump I hate the fact that I cannot shift slow and chill while driving but I gotta quick shift so I don't CRUNCH from 2nd to 3rd I got all my fluids changed and still no fix. Is there something a vender can make to fix this? I'd buy it in a heart beat.

I suggest a short throw that will so horribly destroy your transmission. Really helped w/ the notchiness in mine.

Why would a short shifter destroy your transmission? Did i miss the sarcasm??

short throw is being installed next week. TWM.

I still get CRUNCH when shifting from 2nd to 3rd... even if i go from 2nd to N then to 3rd. still is a pain.. no grind, just a crunch that I hear/feel. if i shift quick its fine, but has to be above 4K.... i think i might try syncomax royal purple when I have my STS installed.. any suggestions?

Hope you ordered bushings too... Your shifting won't be as good without them

You'll still be a little crunchy, but the short throw will help quite a bit... you'll prefer the feel significantly.

Hope you ordered bushings too... Your shifting won't be as good without themHe has all bushings and gate selector replaced.

My setup will definitely have AMS under hood and base shifter bushings, AMS gate selector, TWM short throw shifter, TWM heavy ass knob.

As for fluid I miiiight change out to amsoil... maybe.
