: Evo X trunk

Hello to all!

I was planning to buy an Evo X. However all available info shows that the trunk of the Evo X is only 6.5 cu.ft = 195 lt, which is ridiculous for a car of its size, it's like a Mini Cooper or other similar car. CT9A Evos (VII-IX) were at ~400 lt, if I remember correctly, so it's 50% down. Unfortunately, this is a real stopper for me, since it would be the main car of the family, which includes a small daughter, hence 195 lt is simply inadequate (we barely manage with our current car's 285 lt). The regular Lancer is at about 400 lt as well, so how can it be that small for the Evo ? (OK, rear diff + battery + water, but -50% ?)

Can anybody provide feedback on this ? Photos of the trunk show it is a bit shallow...

PS. I understand that the primary target of this car is not moving around one's family. However it's too expensive to have it only for track-day use... Serious mistake from Mitsubishi, if it was supposed to be an "all-around", "daily driver" car...

Saw the car this week and YES the trunk is TINY.

It's as wide and high as a regular Lancer, but it is not deep at all (because of the windshield washer fluid and battery).

I can imagine the backseat will be the best place to put any luggages.

That DOES suck for you. I'm not happy about the small trunk either, but I have enough vehicles (including a truck) so it's not a big issue for me.

Wonder if things could be moved around to make up some free space?

FWIW though, the hinges are on the outside, which does help.

You are correct. The trunk IS SMALL! It's about half to one third the usable space of my last e46 M3.

However, you must remember that they moved both the battery and the washer-fluid resevoir to the trunk which is a big reason for the reduced capacity.

you can take out the 18" spare and foam under the floor board.

Having problems with anal leakage, eh?

lol, j/k.

Can you post pics with those items in the trunk to see what kind of space they consume?

That could be a good start.

The trunk is one of the most dissapointing things. It's alright though, I'll live.

I took a stroller to the dealer to test it in a Lancer first. That was too small for me. Too bad some find it too small. The STI hatch is an option, or roof racks for the Evo X. I'd suggest my car but they stopped making them for NA.

If you take out the spare replace it with a can of fix-a-flat.

The reasons the Trunk is "smaller" then the base lancer is for two reasons 1 the Battery and a few other things have been moved back there for weight balancing. 2 the AYC sits right underneath the trunk limiting size of the trunk as well

If you want Evo performance but the trunk space to match it I would suggest waiting for the Lancer Ralliart. the is no AYC so the trunk is larger.

I wouldn't imagine moving house with it.
I don't have a spare tire, but there is enough there space for 3 suitcases which is what I need for quick road trip for the family every month.

We do take a stroller, but we had to bin our large stroller and buy one of those umbrella strollers. ( Folds up into nothing..) Just have to be better with packing the trunk and getting collapsible items.... You cant have everything :)

The Super All-Wheel hardware takes up space too, that's why the RallyArt will have decent trunk space!!:godance:

I bet there would no-one that would not buy an Evo X if it had let's say 61-39 weight distribution instead of 59-41 (not to mention that very few people could tell the difference in terms of handling or performance)

But I do know there are some, maybe a few, that do not buy it, because the trunk is ridiculously small. I am not talking about a truck, I am talking about the needs of a small family for a week of vacation (and putting luggage on the rear seat is not my view of "safe journey" -and it's ugly).

IMHO $35K-$40K (or in Europe 50K-60K euros) is a bit on the expensive side for a track-day toy (weighing 1550 Kg). If I want a track day car I pay the same money for an Elise...

FYI, Evo IX in Japan and Europe did have AYC (and also the windscreen washer fluid AND the ACD oil reservoir in the trunk) but it still had ~400 lt of trunk

Serious mistake from Mitsubishi this one...

It's funny that there have been 1000's of pages in Forums about whether the 4B11T can take 1000 HP (I wonder how many would do it... most people would probably be at the ~400 HP range, which should be easy) but very few have mentioned something that, contrary to the performance issues, cannot be fixed whatsoever.

Anyway, thanks everybody! Maybe I make the "leap" and go for an M3 after all...

the evolution was never designed to be a family car. there is one mistake who thinks it was. Just because it have 4 doors ...I think you did a mistake, if you get the Evo as a family car,. There is planty of cars you can buy for straight performance and fairly good cornering for $35k and above.
I'm sure the M3 will be less family car then the evo though... 2 door, smaller interior, rwd./snow rain/ etc.
I think you better of with the Jeep srt. seriusly. It is fast, and roomy, safe, etc.

First of all you buy a rally replica car like the Evo for your own amusement.

But if you have a family (= broader audience Mitsu is supposed to attract with the "softer", "larger", "more civilised" Evo X, otherwise it would be an upgrade of the CT9A chassis and the 4G63), then you must somehow IN THE SAME TIME be able to carry people & things around (not for city commuting maybe, then you buy a small car, but for travels certainly).

Some of us cannot afford buying a $40K (50-60K euros in Europe!) car for our own amusement and then buy another (large) car for the family, because then the Evo becomes an expensive toy for personal amusement and then there BETTER cars for this (eg. Elise, S2000, BMW Z etc.)

Evo IX was a perfect example of what I am saying: even though it was bullet-fast, it could still accommodate "single car family" needs.

Yea this may be a bit of a deal breaker for me even as a single individual. I've been known to load the car up and going skiing or riding. If you've got 3-4 friends plus gear you will be in a tight situation.

I thought about this issue when i saw the trunk. But in the end i decided that the few times when i need to carry a bunch of stuff or pick up people from the airport should not stop me from getting the car i want.

I guess you just have to look at the ratio of when the trunk will set you back. For everyday life that involves strollers for instance, that should play a deciding factor because of practicality, but for one-offs like trips with hefty amounts of luggage involved, I would probably just consider the alternative like a rental?

That way you can still get the car you actually want! :)

I think robevo nailed this on the head. I think I know a car perfect for what YOU want because the EVO is not a replica rally car anymore. Family was sacrificed in the name of attracting the younger business man audience (seriously what family needs bluetooth and nav system if you're all going to be in the same car)

The car I suggest for you Charger SRT8 or if you want new and cheap. Pontiac G8 GT

Can you fit a trailer receiver on the EVO X? If so, you can use it to mount a bumper-box when you need to carry a lot of luggage for a vacation...

But some of us can!!!! :P

Lol well some of us are only rich enough to have one car, and if that car is an X, then a tiny trunk is just something one has to deal with. It's a little bit smaller if you get the Rockford Fosgate system in there because of the sub on the drivers side of the trunk.
