HOW TO INSTALL FACTORY BLUETOOTH INTO EVO X GSR

Please note that any work you do on your own may void your warranty so do so at your own risk and only if you know what you're doing!

Level of diffilculty from 1-10 (1 being easy): 8 (due to custom work on steering wheel, and modifying harness loop...)

PARTS NEEDED:

LANCER/OUTLANDER BLUETOOTH KIT Part # MZ313819 (All three items in the picture below are included)

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/Picture%20048.jpg

TOOLS NEEDED:
- PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER
- 17MM SOCKET and RATCHET
- PLIERS
- DREMEL WITH CUTTING TOOL
- JB WELD or SIMILAR ADHESIVE
- T30 TORX SCREWDRIVER

STEPS:

1) Remove the negative terminal from the battery in the trunk

2) Remove glovebox by squeezing the sides towards each other. As the glovebox starts to drop down, take note to the right side of it, there is an airshock attached to it.
Remove that by pulling towards the drivers side. Now the entire glovebox should drop down on its hinge. Pull towards you to remove.

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00487.jpg

2) Remove the glovebox liner by taking off 4 phillips screws along the top, and one plastic clip in towards the rear.

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00494.jpg

3) Look through the glove box "void" and pay attention towards the left drivers side. There should be an unused harness taped with blue electrical tape. This harness will connect to the handsfree module supplied in the Bluetooth kit.

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00495.jpg

4) Install the bluetooth module inside the dash with the 2 provided phillips screws and plug the harness you found into it.

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00496.jpg

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00529.jpg

5) Remove the map light console from the roof by prying the entire assembly downwards. Disconnect it from the harness.

6) Install the microphone included with the bluetooth kit to the map light console.

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00520.jpg

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00521.jpg

7) Locate the unused harness taped by blue electrical tape and plug that into the microphone.

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00524.jpg

8) Plug the map light harness, and re-install map light console.

9) Reverse steps 2 through 1 to re-assemble the glove box compartment.

(Thats the end of the "easy" part)

RELOCATION OF THE AWC SWITCH TO CENTER CONSOLE AND INSTALLATION OF AUDIO CONTROL SWITCH ON STEERING WHEEL

In order for the bluetooth to work, we need to move the AWC switch on the steering wheel and replace it with the radio audio control switch.

1) Start by pulling out the center console tray. Pull straight up and it will come out. Notice an unused harness attached to it. Disconnect it.

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00579.jpg

2) Replace the tray with the center console panel. Assemble it with the blank button inserts along with the new AWC switch. Plug the harness you just found, and plug it into the AWC switch.

REMOVING THE STEERING WHEEL
(It gets harder and harder at this point)

Best thing to do at this point is to study this diagram and familiarize yourself with the different components of the steering wheel and how to take it apart....

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/steeringwheel.jpg

1) Look at the bottom of the steering wheel, and remove the access panel (#1 on diagram) in order to reach the Airbag harness and Horn Harness...

2) Unclip the yellow Airbag harness taking care not to damage it. It is held by a "slip-type" harness.

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00600.jpg

3) Unclip the black horn harness

4) using a Torx T30 screwdriver, remove the airbag by loosening the two torx screws... one on each side of the steering wheel. It helps to wiggle the Airbag Unit as you loosen the 2 screws on each side. The screws will keep turning and feel "long". They are locked in place and will not come out completely... so keep loosening, and it will release the airbag unit...

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00586.jpg

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00587.jpg

5) Carefully take off the airbag, exposing the 17mm nut holding the steering wheel and another "Gray" harness attached to the steering wheel position sensor.
MAKE SURE NOT TO MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL SENSOR THAT THE GRAY HARNESS IS ATTACHED TO.
IT WILL SWING FREE ONCE THE STEERING WHEEL IS REMOVED.

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00589.jpg

6) Remove the 17MM nut and the steering wheel will come off. Make sure to mark the position of the steering wheel with a sharpie so you know the exact position to place it in when re-installing...

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00534.jpg

7) With the steering wheel off the car, we will now disassemble the steering wheel by removing the 4 phillips screws.

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00540.jpg

8) Pay attention to the drivers side section of the steering wheel housing and dremel the necessary section out to accomodate the steering wheel voice control switch.

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00536.jpg

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00537.jpg

9) Locate the orange unused harness. Plug it into the voice control switch.

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00533.jpg

10) Once you have the switch fitted, Use adhesive to attach the switch. I used JB Weld. Test fit everything twice before gluing...

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00538.jpg

The finished product should look like this....

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00539.jpg

11) Next, flip the steering wheel around and disconnect the AWC switch harness. Its RED in color

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/normal_DSC00598.jpg

12) Take off 4 Phillips screws on the BACK SIDE of the steering wheel. The front silver part should come apart exposing the switch.

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00599.jpg

13) Remove 2 phillips screws holding the AWC steering wheel switch and remove the switch carefully. It is also clipped-in on three sides.

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00597.jpg

14) Replace with Audio Control Switch and re-use the RED harness to plug into it.

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/DSC00596.jpg

15) Re-assemble the steering wheel by reversing steps 13 through 7.

16) Re-install the steering wheel by reversing steps 7 through 1.

Continuation To Final Steps...

FINISHING THE BLUETOOTH INSTALL.

1) Take apart the center console by opening the arm rest. Reach into that, and the cup holders and firmly pull up. The center console is held in by clips.

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/normal_floor.jpg

2) Find the center harness that is terminated by a black harness loop with 1 blue wire, and 1 black wire. (Its right in the middle UNDER the cup holders...)

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/c31.jpg

3) Unclip the harness. We will have to modify the black harness attached to the car.

4) Study the back of the harness and note how the wires are clipped in. We will have to move pins 4 to 3 and pins 6 to 7. This will re-route the signal of the steering wheel switch from operating the AWC to operating the radio controls.

http://www.socalevo.net/gallery/albums/userpics/15351/normal_awc.jpg

5) Re-attach the harness, and re-assemble the center console.

6) Re-attach the car battery.

7) Have dealer program the car with the MUT-III scantool program to recognize the bluetooth module. It will literally take 10 minutes for them to do.

8) Test all the functions and enjoy your new FACTORY BLUETOOTH.

The hardest part is probably custom-fitting the voice control switch and also modyfing the loop harness. I love the new Evo 10 and the CAN-BUS system it runs on. Everything is pre-wired in the car and its wonderful to know how easy it is for us to manipulate the functions...

Verified working. Installed everything this weekend. The only thing I would add is maybe making a template for the cutout so I can put it into the How To and let people print it. Might be somewhat difficult though. Also, getting the pins out of the harness is easy, once you know how. DO NOT PULL THE WIRES OUT! Instead, you will see the connector is wrapped in a plastic connector. If you pop the connector open, on both sides of the harness, you can then use a small screwdrive to push in the pins, and then they pull out easy.

Other then that, everything was great! Thanks Antics!

negative on that... The SST tranny was the deal-breaker for me on that one. For the extra cost of the MR, I chose to go for the mod-friendlier path and use the extra coin saved for suspension, wheels, etc...

I couldn't believe that bluetooth wasn't an option on the GSR! Anyhow, great tutorial! Good details and very helpful pictures! I do have some questions:

1) Is the Bluetooth Steering Wheel Voice Control Switch module just glued on using JB Weld?? Is it strong enough to withstand years of button pushing?

2) I'd like to avoid cutting up the Steering Wheel Housing.. I assume there is a Steering Wheel Housing that has the cut-out removed already. Anyone know the part number for that part? It should be the same one that's in every non-GSR Lancer, as Bluetooth is standard on all other models.

3) Where do all the illustrations come from? They look like a PDF version of the factory service manual.. Is there a copy "floating around" or how much would it be to purchase one?

Thanks for the compliments. I try to share as much info with the EVO community as time allows me... but lets see:

1) Is the Bluetooth Steering Wheel Voice Control Switch module just glued on using JB Weld?? Is it strong enough to withstand years of button pushing?

It is indeed just glued with JB Weld. If you have ever used that stuff, you will find that JB Weld is pretty darn strong. I have no doubts that it will withstand the lifetime of the car so long as you dont STRONG-THUMB those buttons... When I had a chance to play around with the MR, The buttons on the MR actually flexed back more than my JB Weld setup... so im pretty confident on that.

Unfortunately, I dont know the part number to the steering wheel housing. Its more complicated than that however as I imagine you will probably have to purchase the ENTIRE MR steering wheel in order to get that plastic portion. Keep in mind that the GSR Steering wheel internals are different than the one on the MR, so its better to custom-fit it.

3) Where do all the illustrations come from? They look like a PDF version of the factory service manual.. Is there a copy "floating around" or how much would it be to purchase one?

I can't really disclose where I got the illustrations from, but lets just say I know some people on the inside... :shades:

I actually just want steering audio controls. I assume they would control the actual stereo and not just the bluetooth. I guess i would just need these parts?

STEERING WHEEL AUDIO CONTROL SWITCH Part # 8701A193
CENTER CONSOLE SWITCH PANEL Part # 8011A267
BLANK BUTTON PLUG Part # 8050A018 (you will need 2 of these
AWC CENTER CONSOLE SWITCH Part # 8610A019

Has any one has installed one of these then used an aftermarket headunit adapter with it?

How do you pair the phone with the cars bluetooth? Can you copy your phone book to the Navi Unit, does the Navi Unit have control over the phone when connected? Or do you have to use your cell phone to dial out?

PDXEvo
05-22-2008, 03:02 AM
This is kind of a pain, and I wish it wasn't so, but there is no other way to do this that I am aware of. You need to hit the voice swich on the Steering wheel controls, listen to the options, and say SETUP. Then just follow the options the voice gives you to pair your phone.

that is one amazing writeup.... and a lot of work too

To make a phonecall, it works like any other Bluetooth. Press talk button, say "call" followed by the number and it dials for you.

is the bluetooth a direct connection to your phone like the ear pieces? so I can use my current voice commands/name recognition?

Or is this like other in-car bluetooth systems where you have to load each "contact" in one by one through the voice menu?

You, have to switch wires to the canbus (wiring) system to see the phone controls on the wheel and for it to work. also it is really not hard to do following the instructions, and you do not have to glue it onto the wheel, you can make a small metal bracket and bolt it on like the factory, thats what I did. works great I did mines about two months ago. also did not void warranty if done right, only wheel cover that is cut.

Yes, these parts are all design and wired for the car, I believe they did not offer it in the GSR to push the MR, the same with lather seats, which I also had install from the dealer. I spoke the shop manager about it, he knew it would work, but the HQ told him he could not install it, but it would not void my warranty if I installed without damaging the wiring, dealer needed to verify it is working properly.

Guys, question for you on the only part of the how-to that scares me:

MAKE SURE NOT TO MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL SENSOR THAT THE GRAY
HARNESS IS ATTACHED TO.
IT WILL SWING FREE ONCE THE STEERING WHEEL IS REMOVED.

Can someone expand on that a bit? I'm confused as it says don't move it, but that it will swing free once i remove the steering wheel? Should i tape in in place somehow? I've never had a wheel off a car so I haven't had to deal with that before.

Thanks for any input / clarification.

No, when you reconnect the battery the Nav/computer will scan for new software and see the phone setup, all you do is pair the phone.

Dunno what that meant either, but just don't touch it I guess. It was fine when I installed mine - it did move around a bit, but didn't overtly try to move it. I think as long as you don't move the sensor around it's okay. The last bit with the black connector was quite difficult. I couldn't figure out how to unclip it so I ended up breaking it. You have to slide it out toward the shifter - stick a very thin flat head screw driver underneath the black connector from the back (where the wires are) and then push forward toward the front of the car. Anyway, overall I am quite happy regarding the install. Thank the poster for posting this.

The fact that the steering angle sensor moves so easily after you unhook the wire is pretty nerve-wracking, but over all this is an incredibly simple install.

All i did was the volume controls and maybe this weekend i'll extend the AWC wire harness and mount that on my dash so i get my cubby back lol.

Is there a way to do this similar process in a lancer that has all of the buttons installed and just needs the bluetooth installed? My car came bluetooth capable from the dealer, but just without the option. Any help? Thanks! And ideas on cost, labor, etc. as well are much appreciated!

So have people installed this into their GSR. I just installed the bluetooth controller and steering wheel controls but there is no response. If i take it to the dealership and they use the Mut III scantool will it then work? Anyone have experience where they installed the device and it did not work until it was taken to the dealership and the scantool was used or did it work right after installing into the car. Thanks.

plugged it right in and it worked for me. Didn't bother with the audio controls or anything, just the bluetooth.
