: PERRIN Performance EVO X and a company challenge!

Let the rivalry BEGIN!

PERRIN Performance is not just Subaru. We have always worked our magic into other brands like Scion, Dodge SRT-4, MazdaSpeed and Mitsubishi. However, the company decided in recent months to chisel our focus and thus cease development of new products for any cars other than the Subaru. Our sales department has now tried to move the remaining inventory of MazdaSpeed, Scion and SRT-4 items remaining. Well I decided that I am resurrecting some focus BEYOND just Subaru!

I have always been a fan (and will continue to be) of the Subaru models and have owned nearly a dozen of them in the past 6 years, I can say that I have always been drawn to the Mitsubishi Evolution. Purchased one of the very first 03’s to hit our local area and truly loved the car. PERRIN Performance used the car for R&D on most all of the products we currently offer for the EVO 8/9. After a year I reluctantly sold the car to get into the STi. Only to sell the STi about 6 months later. In 2005 I again went for the EVO and we as a company developed a beautiful blue and silver combination car of performance, style and luxury. It was featured in several magazines and then recently sold to a new home in the Chicago area.

So that brings me to today. While I continue to enjoy helping all of our Subaru clientele I have decided that my personal performance machine is going to be the Evolution X! Many have criticized the heavier curb weight and the new body style, I find myself drawn to the angular lines and chunk body. It exudes performance and purpose, both things I REALLY like. Also, I like many others have not been 100% sold on the new Subaru WRX and STI sedan and H/B style (I still own an 08 Sedan so please no hating!) while I think the EVO stays true to its roots even with a few extra pounds. Well yesterday I bit the bullet and purchased “Project X”! A 2008 Evolution X, in Wicked White.

This car is simply amazing. The folks at Mitsubishi have really done their homework. So many improvements to the interior. The materials are richer, and oh my god CRUISE control! ( I can’t tell you how upset my right leg was on our many trips to Las Vegas from Portland in the 05 EVO!) Even the new Rockford Fostgate sound system, well, sounds GOOD! Of course the car is still in break-in mode, but even with that, the power is strong and deliberate. Waiting a few hundred more miles before I strap it to the dyno and see where I am starting.

Ok so you ask; “What is this rivalry you mentioned in the title?” Simply put it is the old school Camaro vs. Mustang, only this time it is Mitsubishi vs. Subaru. Jeff Perrin recently purchased an 08 STI, and now I have the 08 Evolution X. The ground rules haven’t been set yet (to things like budget, etc.) but it is going to be a take no prisoners kind of contest. From drag racing, to lap times, style and luxury, day to day drivability, fuel economy, we are going to battle it out in the coming year to see who rises to the top.

I will post more information as it develops. In the meantime stay clicked to the blogs and to our gallery to see the cars as they shape up. Also, don’t be surprised to see a feature article or two in your favorite magazine online or on newsstands coming soon!

I am at 403 miles on the ODO. Loving the car so far with two minor exceptions

1) EXTREMELY hard start. Generally have to crank it 10 secs twice to get it to light off.

2) Erratic and dismal idle quality even when warm. At a stop light I SWEAR it is going to die.

Depending on how things go through the weekend, will determine if I take it for service checks on Monday. Might also try a different brand of fuel.

any thoughts guys and gals?

Apparently that's an ECU programming thing, and Mitsu is working on some new ECU code to help the poor idle.

That is nice that I am not the only one. I may be the worst at searching, but I couldn't find similar problems. Do you have a link to those threads?

I havent had the idle thing yet, yet I have seen strange things happen on the RPM gauge when the clutch is pushed in while cruising. I have also noticed the slow start up, but its definitely not 10 seconds. I am spending more around 3 to 5 seconds to start. This is odd, because previous Evo fired up instantly. I wonder if they aren't using batch firing for startup. I also ran into a SES light this weekend while doing some spirited driving that bothers me. You can view those details here: http://www.evoxforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2844

One thing is for sure though. I picked up the Perrin MBC at the event you guys had this weekend (which was very cool btw), and did some runs with it in to set the boost levels good. The car becomes a completely different beast. I am running 24psi then it falls to ~20psi around red line. Unfortunately, all the ECU learning has been on much lower boost, so I am feeling a ton of timing getting pulled right now, but I am sure that will change as the ECU re-learns new timing maps for the higher boost.

There is a thread dedicated to the idle issue here: http://www.evoxforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2617&highlight=idle

Nothing needs to be fixed, we are making a new version for the EVO X. So mine is the prototype. Shouldn't be more than a week or three.

Chat soon!

I forgot to mention that we did dyno the car last night. WHAT an experience.

Jeff will publish the graphs etc. later on today. But some of the most exciting stuff was the 3 foot fireballs coming out of the back of it BONE STOCK no mods, cat in place etc. etc.

I mean REALLY scary, like anyone else would take the car back to the dealer and DEMAND a new one.

But in the STi vs. EVO bone stock HP and TRQ wars there is a CLEAR winner to the EVO.

More information to come of course.

Yes, its a sad day the EVO made more WHP than the STI :(
Guess Mitsu had to under-rate the car to make up for that added weight! :)

Jeff. Please repeat. Stock Evo X makes more HP ATW more than the stock 08 STI ATW?

LINK IS FIXED! SORRY! I missed one of the numbers when copying.

Jeff. Please repeat. Stock Evo X makes more HP ATW more than the stock 08 STI ATW?

Repeating, EVO makes more WHP than the STI. We will have to see how this turns out when we start building parts for it. More to come soon!

Wow, I'm surprised to hear that the EVO is laying down more power on your dyno. Good for us!
