Here is the Story...

I guess it all comes down keeping costs down, when Mitsubishi decided to use a plastic designed clutch master cylinder on the evo X. The first issues with the stock unit came up when it decided to finally gave up on me on the way to a work conference......quite possibly the worst possible timing ever. My car is currently running an Ark Design g700 twin plate clutch, I was very weary about doing the evo ix clutch master conversion so I opted to just replace the stock unit with another one. I did this in the hopes that someone would make an after market direct bolt on Clutch Master cylinder, I knew the stock unit wouldn't last long but my car is not daily driven. While browsing online I came across news about SSP making an aftermarket unit, I was forwarded over to Kris and he was able to answer all the questions I had about their design.

I received a second version model SSP clutch Master Cylinder shortly after our phone conversion:

The packaging was great I was very impressed with the build quality of the product. *please note that they ship out with the piston inside the actual unit*

Time to install:

Everything was very straight forward. Just follow the detailed directions that are included with the actual unit. Make sure to take out all the necessary bolts and brackets and tuck wire in, this will help later on with removing/installing the Clutch Master Cylinder.

Now here came the issues:

^As you can see this is my slave cylinder^

^this is the slave cylinder used in the directions. For some odd reason I have a completely different slave cylinder in my car.

There was no way this Fitting for the upgraded clutch line would fit this slave cylinder without snagging. I highlighted the necessary clearance space needed in the second picture. Two things would work in this instance shaving off part of the bracket to provide the necessary clearance space for the thicker fitting or using a bended elbow to attach the fitting. I have spoken to SSP about this and they will be resolving this issue. We believe that the difference in slave master cylinders is due to the fact that my EVO has a very early build date(Nov 2007 to be exact). As far as I'm aware out of the 50+ units out to the public I am the first one to run into this problem.

I decided to slightly shave off the appropriate space.

Before:

After:

After this everything was very straight forward. Removed the old clutch line and fitting. Then replace it with the provided fitting and upgraded clutch line.

We then dropped out the stock clutch master cylinder unit. You do need to access a portion of the clutch master cylinder though the hole in the driver side fire wall.

The SSP clutch master cylinder put together. *note it does reuse the factor spring and foot pedal shaft.

Lastly I would recommend using t-bolt style clamp on the clutch fluid line. I have been in contact with Kris over at SSP for some reason my car has an oversized clutch fluid line perhaps again due to the build date of the car (nov 07).

V marks the clamp you want to use. We had and issue with the other clamp not securing properly and leaking fluid all over the place.

Be sure to secure the upgraded clutch line after you are done installing the new clutch master cylinder.

All in all the installation took about 4 hours due to the need to modify the slave cylinder bracket. The build quality of all the parts supplied is simply amazing. The issues I encountered were only due to the fact that my car was an early built evo. SSP is resolving these issues and should be providing the proper parts. I would highly recommend this unit to everyone, not just the person in need of this as supporting mod while making power but also for those wanting to keep their car stock it will just add that extra reliability one looks for. SSP has top notch customer service and stands by their products. After about 300 miles of hard driving I cant find one issue with the unit.

Well, don't want to say something stupid but do you have push to pull conversion of the slave cylinder? That might be the reason for "strange" slave cylinder.

even with the conversion the slave cylinder was always sitting in that same position.

Great write up thanks for all the info, I'm going to have to check my built date so I could let SSP know before I order. Thanks
