A couple of drivers including myself reported initial sticky shifts. After a couple of 100kms it goes away after its been worn in.

The only time I experience this type of grinding is when I first get it on the road in the mornings, basically when it is cold. After it warms up a little then it goes away. Some people in other forum said it might be the factory tranny fluid but I don't know since this is my first Evo and these were Evo VIII and Evo IX owners.

3rd gear is notchey, but its not grinding. Seems every Evo X I have been in is the same too for some reason. But the issue goes away when doing spirited driving. My thoughts are it has something to do with the complexities of the 1st and 3rd gears being used for reverse, and the extra synchro in place because of it.

My trans is very notchy at times.I hope it gets better with more use.

Sometimes the gearbox won't catch the reverse gear. I had that happened to me a couple of times. It's weird, It just won't latch onto the reverse gear. The third gear is sometimes very notchey too as PDX has mentioned. I'm sure after a few more hundred miles it will smoothen up, if not I'll be going to the dealer real soon. Right now I've driven 267 miles.

I have a second gear notch if I try and shift normal between 3k and 4k rpms normally. I have to either shift low in the rpms or high to avoid the drag/notch. Also blipping the throttle when you press the clutch in to shifts helps greatly. It is annoying to have to do that though. I am at 600 miles so hopefully it will get better. Sometimes it is bad.

*Update*. I just reached 1000 miles ( thats aroudn 1609 KM). I come to notice that the gearbox has smoothen up quite alot. However when the engine temp is still low, the box would still be notchy sometimes. Other than that, nothing seems to be out of the ordinary.

Well, I have about 850 miles and my notchiness is awful and hasn't improved AT ALL. My impressions so far are that mitsubishi builds a good quality product, but has questionable quality control and overlooks certain things that could cause problems down the road. My X shifts great if I speed shift it, but normal shifting produces a horrible crunchy, notchy feel/sound, and I'm fuckin pissed. I love the car, but this takes away from the enjoyment so much for me. My 1st to second is bad, 2nd to 3rd is horrendously awful, and 3rd to 4th occasionally is a little notchy. 5th feels pefect every time. Mitsubishi better fix this shit soon. Oh yeah, and the stock clutch is shit also. Way too soft! However, I love the car even through all of this. It's so much fun to drive, and everything else about the car is perfect. Chassis, suspension, brakes, ride quality, build quality, all top notch. Ireally hope this notchy thing is just a fluid issue. Ugh... so irritating.

Lol, I was in a bad mood about the notchiness when I wrote that. After I thought about it for a while, I just don't really care anymore. I love everything else about the car, and I can live with the notchy thing. Besides, after speaking with a rep at mitsu corporate and asking him why the car seems to shift smoothly when speed shifting but is so notchy when driving under normal conditions, and his answer made me feel a lot better. Apparently, the tranny has been built to handle a LOT of abuse, and the synchros are really beefy, enabling them to handle aggressive shifting but that a side effect is that they do tend to be a bit on the overly notchy side. He says that it's just how the car was designed, and I can live with that. Speed shifting seems to be what it likes,so speed shifting is what'll get.

Mitsu is just trying to do what we ask them to do. people has been complaining about the EVO-8-9 for years. Owning EVO 8-and 9 i can tell you guys that Speed shifting
in an 8 or 9 is a no no. But with the EV0-X I can shift like my Old 98 Civic SI again.

I'm at about 4500 miles now, and other than my first shift into second gear when it's colder than about 30 degrees outside (small notch then), there is no notch.

has anyone had a problem with 3rd gear sounding like its grinding during speed shifts? I've tried everything, even pushing the clutch all the way down and 3rd is still notchy and sounds like its griding.

Sounds like a synchro issue.

A different trans fluid might help. If not, the synchros need to be changed.

I learned the hard way with the VIII that changing the tranny fluid from the DiaQueen fluids is a bad idea. I wouldn't recommend doing that personally.

I just bought the Evo last week and I feel the same notchyness in 2nd and 3rd gear and yes sometime it feels like it grinds before it engages. So far I have 800 miles.

First install these...I've read they make all the difference in the world.

http://www.amsperformance.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=699_701&products_id=1894

Some go on to install these as well...

http://www.worksevo.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=36&products_id=520

and then as a final touch many are replacing the trans fluid with Redline MT90 or Amsoil.

Lucky you, I hate the feeling of these 2nd and 3rd gear notchyness. Hope it will get better or just go away. I'm close to 1k. No mods yet until I see the dealer tomorrow to see what they have to say about this.

I just sold my evo 8... (regretting that decision greatly) one of the many problems I was having with it was grinding in 3rd gear, especially during "spirited" driving.

Im going to invest in the Bushing after my break in period if the problem continues. My 3rd gear feels extremely notchy. Sometimes 1st gear too.. 4th/5th works like a charm.. Im on my 250 miles and it didn't catch Reverse twice.

Good to hear that everyone is having the same problem. This is my first manual car and I thought I eff'd it up learning... pheww what a relief.
