Hey all,

I picked up a 2010 Lancer Ralliart Sportback yesterday.

This will be a on-going project for me. The goal is for it to speak softly but carry a big stick, well, at least for a ralliart. :)

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/albums/RA_Sportback_032710/RA_SB_032710_01.jpg

Did some baseline pulls today. The car was 100% bone stock for this. 178 miles on the car. On the dyno was actually the first time it saw WOT.

Baseline:

192 whp / 210 wtq

17.7 psi peak tapering to 9.7 psi at 6200 RPM

12.5 AFR at peak boost (3300 rpm) tapering to 10.3 AFR (6200 rpm)

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/EVO/evo_tunes/me/RA_SB_032810/RA_SB_stock_032810_01safe.jpg

This is perfectly inline with all the 2009 stock Ralliarts that have been on this dyno so the 2010 seems to be making the same power stock.

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/albums/RA_Sportback_032710/RA_SB_032710_16s.jpg

Here are the stages I plan on going with this car:

1. 100% stock with custom tune

2. 100% stock with GST boost pill upgrade and custom tune

3. DW1000cc injectors, Blaqops single pump kit, GST boost pill upgrade, E85 and custom tune.

4. All of #3 plus start adding OEM Evo 10 parts like FMIC, IC pipes, etc

5. CBRD BBX?

I will be sharing all the data from these stages. I bought this car for my own development purposes, especially for SST development, to benefit all the RA and MR owners...

I'll be updating this thread as I go through the stages. :)

Interesting thing to note is that the 2010 Ralliart still has a aluminum valve cover where the 2010 Evolution moved to the black plastic composite valve cover.

Interested to see how this goes. Some very notable people in the X community are starting to pick these up lately, which I'm sure will mean big leaps in the next 6 months.

Also, don't know if you got my PM a couple days ago Bryan (inquiring about a tune). LMK if you didn't so I can re-send it.

Update:

While I'm busy putting some miles on the car to get ready for some tweaking (currently at 270 miles) I've been working closely with somebody to get access to more tables for the Ralliart. This person will remain unnamed for now so they won't get a ton of PM's. :D

Here is a sneak peak of some of the SST tables I will be able to really get into as far as testing on the Ralliart. One of the main reasons I bought this car:

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/EVO/tech/2010_RA_SST_Tables_033010.gif

;)

This weekend the car should have enough miles on it for me to do stage 1 and 2 that I outlined in the first post...

^ Awesome.

I know you want to keep trade secrets as trade secrets, but I'd love to hear how the SST changes are working for you and what you've found most beneficial. I know you've already been making changes with the X, but it would help us people way far away from you learn how to make the SST dance!

UPDATE: Completed stage 1, 100% stock with custom tune today:

Had to do the baseline again as our dyno computer crashed and we lost the data.

This is a custom tune, the car is still 100% stock down to the paper filter. It also has no boost pill upgrade yet.

223 whp / 241 wtq

Boost after tuning: 18.5 psi peak (3200rpm), tapering to 10 psi (7400rpm)

Boost factory stock: 17.5 psi peak (3400rpm), tapering to 9.5 psi (6500rpm)

Factory boost solenoid is at 100% currently

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/EVO/evo_tunes/me/RA_SB_032810/040310/SportBack_040310.jpg

This is now making about the same horsepower as a stock Evo 10 on our dyno.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is a WOT run 2nd gear through 4th and just into 5th gear, on the dyno.

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/EVO/evo_tunes/me/RA_SB_032810/040310/2nd_through_4th_intakeTemps_040310.gif

You can see the stock FMIC is ok for all of 2nd and all of 3rd but then can't keep shedding the heat anymore once into 4th.

Temp at the MAF stays constant but the Manifold temp raises 7*F

In a single 3rd gear pull the FMIC can keep up but not back to back pulls.

Keep in mind this is on our dyno, which has pretty big fans but obviously can't simulate the amount of frontal air flow deep in to higher gears and higher MPH. However, a good FMIC can still handle this as I have tested them in the same conditions on our dyno.

When I get some time, I'll do the same pull on the street.

It should be interesting to see the same data once I put the Evo 10 OEM FMIC on.

Small update:

I have about 800 miles on the car now. Took it for a drive out to Lake Sonoma in Healdsburg, which is off Skaggs Creek road, one of the best driving road in Northern California, IMHO.

In all honesty, I thought I was going to be really disappointed in the handling of this car but it really surprises me every time I have a chance to throw it around. I'll get this out of the way first, it's not my Evo by any means, but I never expected it to be. I haven't really pushed the car hard and really haven't put alot of heat through it. I know this is where it's going to seperate itself from the Evo, and I totally understand that and have no issue with that, but this thing still surprises me.

I like the SST more then I ever thought I would. Flying into a corner and dropping down gears by just tapping some paddles a couple times and without it upsetting the chassis just amazes me every time. I've been a die hard manual user all my life but this SST continues to impress me.

The low end grunt of this turbo coupled with the SST makes blasting out of corners with the back end wagging out just right and then clicking up through the gears is just straight up fun every time. The stock turbo loses all its fun dynamics at higher speeds like the freeway where the car feels slow as a snail, at least compared to my Evo.

The ride is much stiffer then I imagined it would be. It's not bad but you can tell this chassis is much stiffer then the CT9A, no surprises there. Having a quiet car has been great and I am going to try really hard to maintain that, which has been my game plan with this car and will continue to be.

The huge side mirrors create a TON of wind noise at highway speeds. It's actually a big annoying but i'll trade that for the relentless drone my Evo produces at the same speeds.

It seems really easy to invoke ASC in this car with it all stock down to the stock tires and it's a bit annoying when it starts kicking in so I just started turning it off when I am driving the car with fun in mind.

The car averaged 24 mpg on the way to the lake and back. It's up about 1-2 mpg with the tune. Not bad but I was expecting a bit more with the tune and the car being 100% stock. Keep in mind I am used to 17-20 mpg with my 400whp+ E85 Evo 8.

I've had a ton of use for the hatch already and it's AWESOME. I just throw crap back there and it's really easy to open the hatch and close it back up and go. The hatch just fits my lifestyle right now and to have a hatch with AWD and a turbocharged 4B11 is just icing on the cake. I love it.

This car so far gets much more looks then my Evo ever did, by just normal random average people. Probably because it's a bit odd looking and a bit different then other cars on the road.

This car is going to get really fun with E85 and more power......

Update:

Zeitronix ZT-2 wideband and ZR-2 multigauge showed up along with Injector Dynamics 1000cc injectors.

Trying to find some time to do the boost pill stage to get more data. Then swap to the Evo 10 FMIC and pipes and get some data collection with that. I've been swamped so it's not progressing as fast as I would like right now.

Some good news is that I have been tweaking a bunch of SST parameters over the last couple days and I am getting the car to shift/downshift pretty close to how I want it to in Sport Manual mode at cruise / part throttle and WOT, nice and smooth but firm. :)

Ok a little update.

I've been swamped so I haven't had any free time to work on the car at all. Just been driving it and doing some ecu tweaks here and there. The car has 11XX miles on it now.

However I have been assembling a nice little pile of parts for the project.

Expect reviews / data / photos on the current list here soon, it's looking like it's going to be a fun project! ;)

1. Eibach prokit lowering springs (just need to lower the car a little, keeping it simple for now)

2. Injector Dynamic 1000cc injectors (for E85 conversion)

3. BlaqOps single pump upgrade (for E85 conversion)

4. Zeitronix ZT-22 Wideband Air/Fuel Ratio Meter with ZR-2 Multi Gauge

5. Evo 10 FMIC

6. Evo 10 IC pipes

7. Evo 9 metal BOV

8. Mini-Battery

9. CBRD BBX stock appearing turbo upgrade. ;)

10. Test pipe with in-line mini-muffler

11. GM 3-port boost solenoid

12. Tephra Map-switching mod with knock light

That's about it for now. Hoping to do a big chunk of the things on the list in the next couple weeks.

The BBX will be quite a change in how it drives! You'll love the power, but you might even miss the get-up-and-go of that little sucker.

Let us know how TephraMODs works on the RA, it's a nice addition to the already expansive ECU parameters. Hopefully you don't get too many bricks ;) (Now that tephra has the USDM X "working", the RA is probably well on its way. I don't know if too many changes exist between the RA and X ECU)

Installed the Eibach prokit springs. The rear is a pita.

Also installed a UR testpipe with mini muffler. I ran out of time to throw it back on the dyno but I did do some quick little street pulls today to clean up the tune.

Before bumper went on:

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/albums/RA_Sportback_051610/FMIC_and_Pipes/CBRD_FMIC_06.jpg

Install was VERY tight in places but I only had to do one tiny little modification.

Here is how close it is to the AC condensor part:

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/albums/RA_Sportback_051610/FMIC_and_Pipes/CBRD_FMIC_04.jpg

One tab on the bumper beam has to be bent to clear the CBRD Fmic:

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/albums/RA_Sportback_051610/FMIC_and_Pipes/CBRD_FMIC_05.jpg

The FMIC also pushes down just slightly on the undertray. Every thing goes back on ok but the undertray buldges just a tiny bit underneath.

Also the long tab at the bottom of the CBRD Fmic does not work on the RA as there is nothing to attach it to. I'll have to look under a Evo 10 and see what the differences are.

Great FMIC from CBRD though. Chad is making some killer parts!

Will get actual performance data soon....

Got some data with the CBRD FMIC upgrade today.

HUGE difference over the stock FMIC as far as actually working like a intercooler. ;)

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/EVO/evo_tunes/me/2010_RA/060510/OEM_vs_CBRD_FMIC_060510.gif

Notice that with the CBRD data, the ambient temp at the MAF was approx 85F, where with the OEM it was approx 67F, so it was approx 20F warmer day, and the CBRD still never got heatsoaked like the OEM did pre-WOT.

Through 2nd and 3rd gear WOT, the CBRD FMIC never exceeds 10F warmer at the intake manifold then the temp at the MAF, where the OEM was almost 40F warmer then at the MAF!

Glad to finally have a proper intercooler on this car, espically with the summer temps coming... :)

Put the RA on the dyno today after adding some parts.

The car sits with these mods currently, everything else is 100% stock:

Mitsu metal OEM bov (Evo 9/10)
Evo 10 upper/lower intercooler piping
CBRD FMIC
UR test pipe
GST Boost pill upgrade

It was about 30-35F warmer today (Approx 85F) then the last time (approx 55F) the car had been on the dyno. Which I'm sure skewed things a bit unfortunately.

I also think I might be over-spinning the dinky OEM turbo at this point and the larger FMIC might be a little too big for this toy turbo. ;)

It started getting warmer in the dyno room so I decided to end the session early. I think it's time to upgrade the turbo on this car. :)

Today it put down:

221 whp / 268 wtq

Here is today compared to last time when it was 100% stock but tuned (and approx 30-35F cooler out)

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/EVO/evo_tunes/me/2010_RA/060510/RA_modded_vs_stock_SAFE_060510.jpg

As you can see it gained a healthy amount of power (+27wtq / +20whp) in the low to mid range but struggled past 6,000 rpm.

The good news is the car is now making +70 wtq / +60 whp over 100% bone stock at 4,000 rpm which is pretty impressive for such a small turbo:

100% stock with a tune was the same as a stock 2008 Evo 10 on our dyno. Now it's making more torque. Of course, a 100% stock Evo 10 with just a tune would destroy it with +60 to +70 more whp. :(

Time for a real turbo.... ;)

Evo 10 Exhaust manifold
Specialty-Z 02-Downpipe combo
Ultimate racing test pipe with mini muffler

Injector Dynamic 1000cc injectors
Evo 10 Intercooler pipes
Evo 9 metal BOV
GM 3-port boost solenoid
AEM intake
Tuned using EcuFlash and Tephra V1 map switch + knock light rom upgrade + PSI-target boost control
91 octane

+ 120 whp gains at 7400 rpm!

+ 95 whp peak to peak gains

24.5 psi

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/EVO/evo_tunes/me/RA_SB_032810/082110/me_SBRA_BBXlite_082110_safe.jpg

You can see the dip in the mid range that I couldn't dial out yet. I think there is some airflow issues there with the stock catback and this turbo. You can see the associated dip in boost in this chart:

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/EVO/evo_tunes/me/RA_SB_032810/082110/RA_BBXlite_PSIandGS_082110.gif

The boost plot is tuned with the strategy that I didn't want to bring the boost on as a spike or hit hard because of the SST trans. I did do a couple pulls where I brought it on pretty strong and it would hit target 24.5 psi at around 3900 rpm, in 3rd gear, which is only about 300rpm later then the stock RA turbo.

MAF grams/sec plotted as well. At 24.5 PSI it peaked at 365.7 which is 48.37 lb/min. The stock RA turbo peaks about 33 lb/min and the stock Evo 10 turbo around 41 lb/min for reference.

So far very impressed with this turbo. It's making great power with the limited amount of mods on this car and the stock catback!

Very nice!

So 33lb/s -> 48lb/s represents a 45% increase in airflow

However for EvoX its 41, so going to 48lbs would only represent a 17% increase in airflow.

I would still be VERY interested in seeing how one performs on an X.

I also reckon once you fix that diving tq you will make more power on the top end ... (check your logs for timing pull, or tps pull)

Yea I think the flapper in the exhaust is not liking the airflow. Not sure.

I'm most likely putting a modded internal OEM muffler on soon and we'll see.

There is also some fine tuning still to be done. This was a pretty quick tune, I threw the car on the dyno after a long day of tuning others...

This turbo for sure has more then 48lb/min in it. It held 24.5 psi to 7800 and WGDC was only 66% there to do that.

It's going to see E85 soon here...

I forgot to post this snippet here:

Did a 560 mile round trip this labor day weekend to Mt. Shasta and back in the Sportback. It's first road trip.

Happy to report the car averaged 24.8 MPG there and 25.3 MPG back, average speed 65 mph according to the dash but I was cruising most of the time on the hwy at 75mph. This was with a bit of WOT fun as well in the mountains.

Very happy with this from a car making 120+ whp then stock and running 1000 cc injectors.

Trip was great until on the way back, a girl in a honda accord decided to run into the back of me *after* we where both stopped in traffic on the hwy.... she hit me hard enough to shove my car forward even with me on the brakes and have her plate numbers formed into my bumper cover, lmao.. {pcfreak} :(

Time for a new rear bumper cover and beam, hoping nothing else...

Ok went to finally tune the RA on E85.

Unfortunatly I ended up maxing the fuel system out pretty quickly for some odd reason. Not sure why, I'm going to have to look over everything as this same fuel setup is good for a little over 400whp and 28psi or so on the Evo 10's, on E85 I've tuned on our dyno.

On the good side, at only 25psi (only .5 psi more then my 91 octane tune) the car made:

358 whp / 311 wtq

Which is pretty impressive to me with the "low" boost and still having the stock catback.

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/2010_RA_Sportback/CBRD_BBX_LITE/me_SB_RA_E85vs91_100210.jpg

When I get some time I'm going to look through the fuel system and see what's going on.

She sure zips along with 360whp though. :)

I've just been driving it and doing slight tune tweaks, mainly for SST.

I do still need to get the fueling sorted. Waiting for the larger single pumps to come out to so I can test one.

Assuming it uses the same fuel tank / system as the evo x you dont think the Blaq Ops single pump kit with Walbro 255 is good enough on the build? Im not sure what your goals are considering you just go with the flow on the build it seems.

So I threw the Sportback back on the dyno today just to check the AFR and clean it up a little if I had to. 3rd gear was all good, pretty much running right in spec power wise from last time.

Also did a pull in 4th to make sure everything was ok.

I'm still impressed by the power this thing is making at the boost level and still with stock catback.

370whp / 326 wtq in 4th gear.

26.5 psi peak and I taper it to about 24.5 psi up top to keep the Injector duty cycles under 100%.

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/2010_RA_Sportback/020511/me_SB_020511.jpg

The little dip in 4th gear at 6500 is because I have the boost error correction tight to make sure I don't max out the IDC's up top.

I am now getting a little bit of logged clutch slip but I can't feel nor do I see it really register in the power curve (yet). I really wish the RA had S-Sport mode to get the clutch pressure up a little higher. I would love the added pressure with the power the car is making.

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/2010_RA_Sportback/020511/Slip_RA_020511.gif

I did another 4th gear pull on the street to show how well the CBRD BBX lite spools in 4th.

26psi in 4th at 3500rpm.

Im curious to how it compares to EVO Xs making comparable power. My main question here is acceleration from a stand still to 60ph and then trap speed. Im just curious on how its panning out also with the drive train also with the slight slip on the readings also.

No the stock injectors are not enough to properly support a BBX Lite.

The RA OEM injectors are the same as the Evo 10.

ID1000cc

Which are also maxed out, on E85. The car has more power in it, I'm currently limited by the injectors. Only running 26.5psi boost because of it.

On pump gas they are fine.

Another question. Is the stock RA intake good enough for a BBX Lite or will I need to upgrade that also? That would mean battery relocation wouldn't it?

OEM Evo 10 intake system is so cheap to get used (I just picked up one for $60 shipped with everything, induction tube, maf houseing, box, filter, bracket) you should just use that. You need to relocate the battery to use the OEM airbox though. If you use everything but the OEM airbox and just buy a 3" filter, that will bolt straight onto the OEM Maf housing.

I currently use a AEM Evo 10 intake which is also good.

If you use a mini battery it opens up many options for you.

Yes currently using a Evo 10 AEM intake with a mini battery layed on it's side:

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/2010_RA_Sportback/RA_BBX_AEM_082010.jpg

Ttsumibishi
06-17-2011, 07:03 PM
Also, here's a good question...any risk to running the battery on its side like that? I always thought that wasn't the best of ideas?

And is it a direct bolt in or did you need to fashion some sort of bracket or tie down to get it to fit on its side? I know the AMS battery kit for the RA has the tie down etc to keep it upright..not sure if you did some custom work here?

razorlab
06-17-2011, 07:15 PM
The mini batteries are solid cell so you can mount them upside down, inside the cabin, on your trunk.... doesn't matter.

I'm using the AMS tie down kit with a Hawker Genesys battery.

In all honesty you can make your own tie down for $10 of parts. I was being lazy.

It's a strip of aluminum and two bent rods threaded with butterfly bolts.

Catback is on the car!

I decided to try out the Magnaflow in hopes it would be the quietest of the bunch. Plus I got a great deal on it from Mike@RRE. Thanks Mike!

I wasn't too crazy about the side inlet on the muffler which causes the odd bend of the piping off to one side, but in the end, you can't see it too much unless you squat down or sit down behind the car. The slip fittings were also not my first choice but I think they will be fine. At some point I will also take out the neck-down right where it comes off the cat.

What I do love is the OEM style tips. They are the perfect size, not too big, and fit in the Sportback exhaust bumper cutouts perfectly.

I've only driven it for abour 20mins so far but it's actually much quieter then I imagined it would be. I think the 'mini-muffler' test pipe I have is helping this. I have a feeling I might still put a small resonator in the midpipe to mellow it out a little bit when on throttle.

So far so good. :) Here are the photos. Pardon the dirty car.

A bunch of people on the interweb have not believed some of the E85 mileage numbers I have been posting over the last year in my RA Sportback.

Most state that they get low teens in mixed driving and I always reply that is horrible and that I get 16-17 in mixed driving and 19-20 on hwy. Some people have been crying foul about my statements and that it is "unbelievable".

Well, it looks like putting the new catback on has given me even better mileage, which makes sense since the car flows better.

I decided to take some photo proof of my mixed driving mileage so no crying foul is allowed now. ;) So here we go. Looks like I gained about 1-2mpg.

18.31mpg, mixed driving.

Mixed meaning I used the loud pedal more then once or twice. aka, still had fun with the car. ;)

I think Golden confirmed some time ago that any dash will work with any older / newer model year, it's plug and play. Find one with a similar odo and there is no need for that send in to verify BS. All mileage is in that unit, not on the ecu side.

What is really cool about the 2010+ color displays is that you can show coolant temp along with the other screens, in the 08 version you can't see coolant temp until you cycle to it's own screen.

Update on the car.

I've been chasing an exhaust leak for some months now. Thought it was the gasket from TP-CB since the CB necks down.

Found out this weekend it's from the downpipe as I have a failure somewhere... most likely the flex section.. http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/src:forums.evolutionm.net/get/images/smilies/frown.gif

Bryan, how did you determine the location of the leak. I'm still trying to find mine...

we use this in the oilfield to test for natural gas leaks on new piping installs. It's like a smoke that you can use at all your joins/unions/welds etc. Would probably do the trick for you for a hard to find exhaust leak. There is probably something similar and cheaper but this is what we use.

Went to Tahoe this weekend and was warming up my car Saturday morning and saw steam coming out the bottom of my car. So I looked under and it was all coming from up on the downpipe, nowhere close to the flange. :(

Bryan you need to come up to Alberta and visit us Canucks. I can tell you obviously aren't afraid of the snow. Keep it in mind, the beer is always cold up here!
I raise you your snowed in RA with mine =D

Is that how you determined it was the flex joint, or are you still trying to lock it down?

Well, I live at sea level so I see no snow outside my house. Those photos are from the cabin I rent in Lake Tahoe, which is at 6900ft and 3 hours away from my house. :)
