Tried a different angle so I could watch my hands. I have a bad habit of holding the shifter and shifting too many times. I will break that habit sooner or later.

:yeahthat:
I remember my first school and the instructor smacking my hand the second it left the steering wheel. Very beneficial because I hadn't even noticed it starting to move yet.

So you never went above second gear??

It's fairly unusual to have an autox course require the driver to shift past 2nd gear.

Very nice man, Try to pick better line so you won't need to cross your hand by turning too much I also not sure about down shift to first gear!

I have only hit 3rd gear in autox once. That is real fast for those courses.

My AutoX mentor would always say "slow in, fast out", "Slow is fast" and "smooth is fast" It was not until a few years into AutoX that I really understood what he meant. There is the intellectual part where you rationalize and know it, but until you BELIEVE it, you won't really be fast. I'm still working on that six years later... I'm getting there though.

I dropped my time by 10 seconds my first autocross day by going by this rule. Also to "turn before the cone" in a slalom really dropped my time. By following these two rules my fastest time was better than that of a 4th year autocrosser with an sti with more horsepower than my evo 10.

Thats proof right there that driving style and being instructed on the proper technique will net better results than pumping in more HP than you can control.

By the way, the confidence that 10 second drop gave me was incredible. I can't wait to get a set of dedicated wheels and tires and get serious with autocross, its such a rush!

I had some downtime to just kinda sit and break down your video. I have some advice if you want it... If not just skip the rest of this post.

I know this is a rush, but you need to relax. Smooth is fast.
You need to look ahead. You should never be looking at the gate you are about to go through. You should be looking 2-3gates ahead to see where you need to be to set yourself up for those gates.
As others have said, 2 hands on the steering wheel at all times except when shifting. You will be more precise and will be able to cut corners gates tighter.
When you read this and go out again, do not try to fix everything at once. Pick one of your weak points and work on that til you kick that bad habit, then go on to the next item.
As I watched this keep in mind the angle was a little screwy so my point of view on the course is skewed. I hope I'm seeing everything correctly.
Everybody has a different driving style and we'll argue this shit for days but it's something to think about.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKGWJNrQhd8

:25-:29 -- Smooth out the turn, you went left then straightened out and then left again... go wider and keep the speed up so when you straighten out you are exiting faster.
:29-35 -- Maybe it's the angle but I think you can tighten up the slalom a bit and smooth it out too.
:41-:49 -- The left and then right transition was very abrupt... when you do that it unsettles the suspension. If you smooth it out your car has better grip and can take more speed through that set of turns. Unless your about to smack a cone it's better to maybe go a little wider and keep the speed up than the jerky movements.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uG2WzfyYW3g

:33-:35 -- That almost looks like a straight line through those gates... Don't know why you are making jerky course corrections through it
:35-:42 -- Much much better coming around the left turn. One continuous turn. That's how the whole course should be.
:42-:47 -- Smooth out the slalom.
:54-:58 -- Smooth out the turn a bit. Stop reacting to the gates and plan your course before you get there.

Now, you had a better view as you were there, but look at the videos and then remember the course and see if my critique holds water... If not that's fine, but that's what I see.

You are correct. Remember that this is only like my 5th time out. I am working on pretty much all that you have said its just going to take some time. I do appreciate everything that you have listed though. Im trying to fix everything at once and that is another one of my problems. I will start by doing the 2 hands on the wheel first. Then once that is good I will take something else in. Keep the advise coming cause it is very helpful.

Cool, No problem I will give advise when I can but I am still learning myself. I go over my own videos after every event. In my VIII I put a harness bar in and have the camera mounted there and it looks over my shoulder. I can see where my hands are as well as the course. With all the mods you have this would be a minor one and it would be a better position for the camera. I think AMS sells one where you can install and remove the harness bar like in 2 minutes or something. I'm thinking about that for Lady X's car. (Please notice appropriate use of apostrophe)

joey
04-03-2010, 03:46 PM
I think that is a good idea and I may have to look into that. I will have my Advans mounted to my Gram Lights for the next event so I should be able to grip a little better

joey
04-03-2010, 03:52 PM
The other thing Im going to do for next autox, besides take in what you said, is im going to have my lap top there to watch the vids when Im sitting in line waiting for my next run. That should help me figure out what it is that im doing and where. I should be able to correct my mistakes that way also

Scooter
04-03-2010, 03:58 PM
Though it seems likie a long wait while you are waiting to go, it may not really be enough time to decipher a video... If you runs are split into two groups, yeah, but down here we get 5 runs and they are all back to back and then the groups are swapped. I know I would not really have time... Maybe if I was playing back on the camera screen but you really can't see shit like that.

So work out what you can...

joey
04-03-2010, 04:01 PM

Very good advice!

I bolded the part about keeping two hands on the steering wheel because I wanted to point out that this is something you can practice on the street very easily. In fact this a bad habit most of us formed by how we drive on the street (one hand on the wheel other hand on the shifter). I used to do this a lot, until an instructor suggested I drive with two hands on the wheel all the time whether on the street or autocrossing. Now two hands on the wheel is habit for me.

You can also practice shuffle steering on the street if you want, although not every instructor will tell you shuffle steering is necessary: as long as one hand always has firm grip of the wheel while doing hand over hand there is nothing wrong with that. Personally I prefer hand over hand, it just comes more naturally to me.

PS Hollywood, whoever the passenger was should keep their arms inside the car for safety reasons. I know people like to hold the window frame as a brace (I used to do it myself) but as a passenger the right hand should hold onto and keep tight the lap belt on your left hip and left hand should hold onto the "oh-shit" handle by the passenger window. FYI.

Time for me to get some shuteye...

Night all.

bradze
04-08-2010, 03:53 AM
ill never use the oh-shit handles again. almost every track day i go to i ride along with someone. trying to brace yourself with the oh shit takes so much more than just grabbing the handle for pulling the door shut. the first time i ever went to an autocross an instructor told me to do that when riding along. actually i rode in an evo 9 2 weeks ago, and that handle is to far back, but still much better than the oh shit handles. and every autox club i've ever run with has rules about passengers putting their hands out the window.

Scooter
