Basicly if you remove the OEM air box, you are left with a 1 inch lip from the oem 3" tubing.
it fit a 3 " cone air filter at the end, any type even the $20 ones that you can get at Auto Zone.
Simple 20 hp for $20 upgrade

Sounds like a good plan. Maybe i'll go with a k&n.

so the MAF sensor is not a molded-in component of the stock air box?

I ask because many OEM boxes are doing it this way.

Its on the plastic tubing on the EVO-X
SO AEM,and the other guys are selling you a nice stainless steal tubing
with the a new MAP fitting, for around $100+.
If you dont car so much for looks. I think any Brand Cone Filter would do the job. plus if you like the woooshh sound and not planing on buying a Vent to air Blow off, With just the Cone Filter you and other people can now hear the OEM Wooshh sound.
So for people who dont like that sound should just find a nice drop in filter.
I think for people who dont plan on modding their car because of warranty issues this mod is simple, and you can just put the oem airbox back on in like 10 min before you have to take it in for service.

I'd be hesitant to do this mod, but if I did, there would be a heatsheild involved.

I did it...Cant beat it for 20 bux. Turbo and BOV sound great. I highly recommend this as a filler mod till the reasonably priced intakes with the hard pipe are available.

DIY $20

Buschur $65. The air inlet is still there to direct some air to the filter. this gain 10whp per thier dyno. http://forums.evolutionm.net/showthread.php?t=328813

even buschur doesnt have a heat shield. maybe its not necessary. would be cooler if a CAI was possible for this car.

IMHO looks like something you find on a honda beeter not a 35k evo. No offence intended. I want one that does not suck hot, thin, oxygen deprived air from under the hood. Then again the price is right.

The air vent pops of the oem box and goes back on just as easy. So with the spectre cone filter I purchased at autozone you are getting the cold air from the vent right into the top of the spectre filter which is open unlike the K&N. It took five minutes and I can honestly feel a little bit of difference and love the sound. I would recomment until there is a little bit of competition to drive down the price of the air intakes out there right now. which I think there is only two.

so ----will this void the warranty?--sorry for the dumb question---

Its a hit/ or miss when its come to this question.

Will it void your warranty?, Answer will be No
By Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. MItsu has to prove that the aftermarket part you have install cause issue. But Its going to cost you alot of money to fight it.The big Corp. Has unlimited amount of money, Your chance of winning is slim.

Can it void your warranty?, Answer will be Yes
They can even void your Warranty if you install a boost gauge.
It's all up to what dealership you take it to.

One dealership wanted to void my warranty on my VIII for just a boost gauge.

Then a Dealership 15 mile away, Fix my 4th to 5th gear syncros under warranty
even when they can clearly see my Boost controller, TB- Apexi,
SAFC-2,Intake, After they took the tranny out they can see my Stage 3 CM clutch.

This Cone Intake Mod take 10 mins to put back to stock. Just put
your air box back on if you're worry about Warranty.

if your worried about warranty do just a minimal mods like K and N drop in filter, cat back(not the full) maybe ecu reflash. still some dealer are afraid of Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act once you told them that your aware of this law. Some uses and complains with BBB.

i was under the impression that an ecu re-flash would definitely void the warranty

Does anyone know if any of these mods will void the factory warranty? Will I need to take all of these mods off and stock back on whenever I goto the dealer?

Go back to my last post.
So be safe take everything out before you go back to the dealership.
Its a risk you have to take if you leave your mod. Build some trust with your local dealership 1st.

I take my car with mods on to the dealership all the time, But i know witch one to take it to, and witch one to avoid.

If you do this mod, to get a nice clean flush fitting, you will have to
break off the male fitting on the plastic tube fitting. The female fitting is on the oem box. People who done this mod will know what im talking about.
