: Custom tune with AP vs OTS tune
Freebs 04-11-2010, 11:29 PM Just wondering if anyone has gotten a custom tune done with an AP after using OTS maps? Reason I ask is because I am running a stage 2 map right now but the car is still running unnecessarily rich. I did a hard pull yesterday and all I could see behind me was a cloud of smoke and my buddy who was probably 1/2 mile behind me in traffic could smell my car.
If you have gotten your car custom tuned, how much more power did you pick up over the OTS maps?
I don’t have anything crazy on the car other than test pipe, cat back and an intake but I can imagine there is a fair bit more power to be made if they just lean it out from low to mid 9:1 A/Fs to mid even high 11’s, not to mention the gas mileage would get significantly better when you aren’t foot to the floor.
Any feed back would be great... I am thinking about getting tuned at Cobbs Texas location...

Do you have a wideband installed or are you simply judging off the fact you saw a huge cloud of smoke? My car even spits out smoke at 11.5 WOT. When I had cobb stage 2 with upgraded intercooler and testpipe my afrs were in the 11's during WOT.
However as always a custom tune is going to be better than an OTS map.
Excalibur 04-11-2010, 11:51 PM I have a custom Cobb tune and even at 11.5 I still get black smoke.

going by the James Bond smoke screen I was laying and from my buddy who was behind me... We both have gone through many other turbo vehicles and none have been this bad. Like I get the puff of smoke when you first lay into it, but to continue with more and more smoke for 1-2kms....
Lesterh 04-11-2010, 11:57 PM I ran OTS maps for about a year (Perrin) and then got a custom tune. There is definitely a difference between the two in terms of power. Between 3-6k I made between 20-35 extra whp and about 15 more peak whp. The biggest difference is probably how smooth the car pulls. No hiccups or anything. I'm running about 11.7 A/F at WOT. Never really any black smoke.
Anubis 04-12-2010, 12:01 AM I am running a stage 2 OTS tune with mods in sig. I get a ton of smoke as well. I recently went to a dyno and based on my graph, especially in the 4k-6k range, there is plenty of room for improvement with a custom tune.
MicMcKee 04-12-2010, 12:10 AM I'm at 11.5 with my custom tune, started at about 270 at my stage 2 AP tune and wound up with like 305 when all was said and done...
Still get a big cloud of smoke, haha you can see it in this vid if you look at the end of the pulls...

Sure but....... Get a wideband. :neener:

So you think its worth it?
how aggresive did they go with the tune?

Do you know what your started with for hp on the OTS map? and ended up with after the tune?

ahah come on... the Jame Bond smoke screen is about as accurate as a wideband ahaha:dancebanana:
Yea I know I want to get one but I hate the look of gauges in cars...
weebles 04-12-2010, 12:52 AM Just get an LC1 unit for logging.. no gauges needed.
MicMcKee 04-12-2010, 01:10 AM So you think its worth it?
Yea in the videos it looks like the smoke comes when you let of the gas... mine is just a constant smoke screen
Not just for power but also for drive-ability...
And there's a big fan sucking in all the exhaust in the shop so you don't see most of it...
I still lay down a Spy Hunter worthy smoke screen...

Yea I watched it again and can see the smoke coming out during the entire pull.... oh well guess I cant get rid of that but I will go for the tune for the performance... only thing I wont have is a downpipe... waiting for all this SST tuning stuff to get figured out than I will do it all (Turbo, manifold, downpipe)
Golden 04-12-2010, 06:55 PM I went from 319.43 to 342.50 when I got protuned from the Stage 2 map. I can't post the graph at the moment, because it has their address on it. (it's against forum rules)
lanasa1980 04-20-2010, 04:56 PM I have a custom Cobb tune and even at 11.5 I still get black smoke.
i was thinking about buying an AP, but i dont want black smoke shooting out my tail pipe. Should i just get a shop to tune it instead?

It's a turbo car. At WOT it will always run relatively rich AFRs and you'll almost always get some black exhaust shooting out. There's no need to make your decision based on the color of your exhaust smoke when you have your foot to the floor.

True.. I just thought that some people said that they don't get big clouds of smoke when they get custom tuned in stead of using a AP to tune.
I have an AP. I dont shoot smoke screens, ninja dust or anything.

Word i think i will order one this weekend then i will start saving for mu perrlin downpipe/w high flow cat. I wonder if i can jump to a stage 2 flash when i get ot?

Have you been behind your car and watched someone else go WOT in it?
Even with ap stage 1/stage 2 you're gonna puff black smoke. I highly doubt yours is the only car not doing it.
Rmondoh 04-21-2010, 06:03 PM Here is my dyno graph (http://accessecu.com/dyno/index.php?gb=0&hp=1&torque=1&rpm=1&sl=1&sln=1&runid1=718&rgb1=000000255&runid2=719&rgb2=204000000)
I was running a Stage1 map before I put my parts on and got tuned. I gained 12hp overall which seems small, but that baseline run includes the upgrades so I gained some over just the Stage1 flash just by adding the parts on and them some more once it was tuned properly. The biggest improvement was the much smoother curve.

nice what parts?
COBB Tuning 04-21-2010, 06:20 PM We have seen that these cars lay down an abnormally large cloud of black smoke when running at WOT. The first time we tuned one we thought we had an issue, but after lots of unessecary diagnosis, and after tuning a few more, we discovered that these engines just bellow smoke like a coal-fired locomotive.

lol wow that just made my day....great description of what my car looked like on a dyno a feww weeks back.
Rmondoh 04-22-2010, 12:53 AM nice what parts?
The ones in my signature :)
AMS FMIC / UICP / Intake
HKS Legamax Premium Catback Exhaust
Cobb AccessPort (Stage 1 Custom Tune 317whp 322wtq)
Rmondoh 04-22-2010, 12:58 AM Oh and to the OP's question, when Cobb was tuning my car, it was blowing black smoke the whole time. Some pulls more than others, but there was smoke on every pull...and I still have the stock cat on. So yeah, they are smoky as Cobb said above.

Hey where are you guys located at? I am in NC??

And shoot flames if you have a testpipe. :coffee:
The the OP, with full bolt ons on cobb's mustang dyno on the stage 2 93 ots AEM intake tune, my car put down 307HP/329TQ and after just tuning, it end up with 336HP/354TQ.
The more open your exhaust is, the more black smoke you will tend to get. You should see right behind COBB's dyno on the ground, looks like someone dropped two cans of black paint. LOL

Just so we are clear you had increases of 29hp and 25tq over the stage 2 OTS tune with nothing else added?
I am curious because I want to get a custom tune myself, and my stage 2 ots numbers are almost identical to yours.

Yes, all we changed was remove the catch cans while on the dyno, they were causing oil burning issues. Didn't change a thing performance wise, just tuning from Calvin!!!

cool man, thanks. I guess I know where I am going now!

Wait, you're going to come down to Texas to get tuned by Cobb!? If you do, you totally have to tell me so I can go check out your exhaust while it's on the dyno. :)

No I guess my post was very misleading, sorry man. what I meant to say is I know I am getting a custom tune now, because I need one and its proven to be worth it. I will have to drive a little ways, but not all the way to TX. I wish they were closer though to be honest.

Dude....you just CRUSHED all my hopes.
LOL! It's all good. I would have thought it very impressive if you were driving all the way down here just for a tune though, lol!
