: Evo X parts from JNZ Tuning
Chris@jnztuning 03-02-2008, 07:21 PM We've spent the last week fabricating parts for our new Evo X so I just wanted to give everyone a heads up on what's to come.
*3" SS catback
*3" SS test pipe
*3" SS downpipe
*3" aluminum intake
*2.5" aluminum upper and lower intercooler pipes
* complete FMIC kit
* polished SS exhaust manifold heat shield
* color matched valve covers (powdercoat)
...that's just a taste of what's to come. There's plenty more! {thumbup}

After a LONG day of testing out the parts we designed over the past couple of days we're finally home. The results...simply amazing. These cars LOVE mods. To say they respond to mods well is an understatement!!
STOCK/BASELINE
235.53 whp / 266.46 ft lbs
...not bad!
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b279/11secdsm/stock.jpg
add intake pipe and MBC (+1.5 psi)
The addition of an intake pipe and 1.5 psi netted STAGGERING results. We netted a 44 whp and 28 ft/lb INCREASE with just those parts!!! Talk about a restrictive stock setup!
279.77 whp / 294.50 ft lbs
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b279/11secdsm/addintakeMBC.jpg
add UICP & LICP
The addition of hard pipes netted us some more good number. Not sure how I lost the dyno run file but we netted 17 whp and 10 ft lbs. At this point we started noticing the UICP (hot pipe) has a tendency to fly off the intercooler. A bracket will be made to make sure the two pieces don't come apart.
296 whp / 305 ft lbs
add catback
The catback definitely woke this thing up. Not only does it sound amazing it looks so much better. We netted 14 whp and 1 ft lb. Heat soak is also becoming a problem...a bigger intercooler is definitely going to help this out.
310.48 whp / 306.71 ft lbs
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b279/11secdsm/addcatback.jpg
add test pipe
The stock cat is definitely restrictive...our test pipe netted 20 whp and 2 ft lbs. The tone of the exhaust definitely gets nicer with this piece.
330.39 whp / 308.45 ft lbs
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b279/11secdsm/addtestpipe.jpg
add downpipe
The last piece that we fabbed up was a downpipe. We assumed from previous test results and from the good design of the factory downpipe that results would net near nothing. Benefits include 304 SS construction as well as a WB bung.
By this point in our day the car was very heat soaked...a larger intercooler is in our NEAR future. We netted -2 whp and 3 ft lbs.
328.32 whp / 311.53 ft lbs

I'm working on hosting the video now so i'll post it up later....
All in all, we're VERY happy with what we've seen out of this car with minimal mods. We can't wait to make some more parts and actually TUNE this beast!! Last but not least, I'd like to extend a BIG thanks to the Eric, Mark and Bobby at Philly Dyno Works for allowing us to take over their shop for the day!! Till next time....

EvoX-LI 03-02-2008, 07:36 PM NICE!!!! Amazing. Funny how it lost 2hp. Fix it! How about pricing?
Kooldino 03-02-2008, 08:03 PM I thought that dyno looked familiar. :) The guys at Philly Dyno works are good peeps.
Congrats on the gains, the test pipe is amazing.

We believe it was more of a case of heat soak...that car was working HARD for the entire day.
I thought that dyno looked familiar. :) The guys at Philly Dyno works are good peeps.
Congrats on the gains, the test pipe is amazing.
Didn't even realize you were semi local till you mentioned that! But I agree...every time I deal with those guy it's nothing but fun.
Nice bling!
Thank you sir!

EvoX-LI 03-03-2008, 01:33 AM The pipes do look great, and I noticed the bungs. Are those for the stock o2s or are they for a wideband? Cause I would definetly get one if that had the extra spot for it.
I have a Zt-2 (Zeitronix) from my last car for EGT, Boost, AFR, RPM, and Throttle % Recording. With a display.
michow87 03-03-2008, 02:09 AM i dont know if i have this correct but...does the turbo connect to the test pipe, to the down pipe, to the muffler??? this is kind of off topic, but kind of not.

The downpipe has a provision for the stock o2 sensor as well as an extra provision for a wideband.

The turbo connects to an o2 housing then to the downpipe.
jdm_evo 03-03-2008, 06:08 AM sweet! when can we expect to purchase?
voodooman79 03-03-2008, 07:29 AM Will you guys make a heat shield for the intake??? From what i've read, that area is very prone to generating and holding a lot of heat. Can't wait to see how these mods will make my preordered MR feel.
Chris@jnztuning 03-03-2008, 12:25 PM sweet! when can we expect to purchase?
Soon, very soon! I'm going to work on pricing today and then work out the rest.

We're definitely going to look into some possibilities!

Thanks!
That was actually done the 1st night we got the car into the shop. We welded some 8 AN fittings on both the PCV and CCV then hit it with a high-gloss white.
I knew I'd get tired of the plastic cover quickly, and was surprised to see that it (the valvecover) wasn't painted from the factory.

We can definetely help you out  Shoot me a PM.
I got to ride home from the dyno Sat. in the car and what a big difference in performance! Its much more responsive and pulls alot smoother now, definetely would make a great daily with just those mods alone. Can't wait till the next round of mods is done :godance:
voodooman79 03-03-2008, 07:06 PM Will you guys be making duals? I want a upgraded exhaust that maintains more of a stock look.

Can you powder coat the intake pipes?
silvreclipse 03-03-2008, 11:10 PM wow man that looks awesome and the valve cover is just hot.
Chris@jnztuning 03-03-2008, 11:30 PM ME TOO!

We can powder coat anything. We have a full service finishing division.
evopowa 03-03-2008, 11:57 PM Chris,
Can you let Joe know I pm'd him.

My stock X is just not cutting it for me...
You and me both.
Between the horrific close-rationess of the gearbox and the undersized turbo, it was driving me insane.
Even @ 330/318 output the car still feels insanely boring. I'm anxious for parts to get in to us for R&D so I can tear out this trans and see if taller gears fit, and getting some more power out of the "stock" setup before I tear into it.
The bolt-ons made a significant improvement, but I tend to get bored easily. :(
Chris,
Can you let Joe know I pm'd him.

He just left the shop, I'll call him and beat him about verbally until he responds.
EvoX-LI 03-04-2008, 12:37 AM Great video! Getting better with the editing. There should always be some soundtrack in the background when driving.
Sound freakin sweet. Can't really hear the BOV. Can we change that? http://www.newtiburon.com/forums/images/smilies/misc/5headset.gif

We're waiting on one of the pre-production, prototype ACTs before we push it too much. I don't want the car sitting immobile until it comes in.
We're hoping by end of week.
Kooldino 03-04-2008, 01:09 PM You and me both.

Close ratio is a GOOD thing in terms of acceleration.
Close ratio is a GOOD thing in terms of acceleration.
In most cases, yes it CAN be, however in this case it's a "Too much of a good thing". It's like saying that a quick spooling turbo is good for acceleration and slapping a T-25 on a built 2.3.
1st through 3rd even at this power level are so short that you're shifting more then accelerating. I feel like I'm driving an old Rabbit GTI with this gearbox at times. At high power levels, I wouldn't be surprised if the car would be in 5th before/at the 1000' mark.
I have some ideas/hopes, but I need to get into the gearbox to see if they're going to work.
TRUSTcompany9000 03-04-2008, 06:28 PM We need dual tip catback!

Not exactly. a T-25 on that motor would limit performance, where as a short gearbox just makes you shift more. :P

So what do you want? Longer gears? If they made them longer, you'd be looking at a 14 second car. Would you be OK with that?
At high power levels, I wouldn't be surprised if the car would be in 5th before/at the 1000' mark.
No doubt.

Fun.
So what do you want? Longer gears? If they made them longer, you'd be looking at a 14 second car. Would you be OK with that?
I doubt it would be a 14 second car. With the fact that we're picking up 100 whp with simple bolt-ons, and I'm guessing at least another 40 whp in just retuning the stock ECU, I highly doubt that many people will be keeping these at stock power levels for long.
Even with just 100 whp extra 1st through 3rd feel rediculously short.
Kooldino 03-04-2008, 06:59 PM I doubt it would be a 14 second car. With the fact that we're picking up 100 whp with simple bolt-ons, and I'm guessing at least another 40 whp in just retuning the stock ECU, I highly doubt that many people will be keeping these at stock power levels for long.
I'm talking about at stock power levels. If you significantly increased the length of the gears, it could easily put it in the 14s with stock power.

I ordered an MR so i don't know about your short gear ratio problems... but are you forgetting to take shifting into consideration??? Shifting takes time! Too much shifting is a bad thing for the 1/4, not enough and it's bad as well! There is a fine fine balance between gear ratio's and power in order to optimize the car for whatever racing application you're going after. This car isn't meant to be a drag car, it's a track car, so the gearing is probably "geared" more toward that. Just a thought!
I'm talking about at stock power levels. If you significantly increased the length of the gears, it could easily put it in the 14s with stock power.
Right, I'm not talking stock, as it'll be rare that people will worry about that type of performance and still keep it stock.
With it stock, being 200lbs. heavier then the VIIII and with similar gearing to the VIIII you're probably right it would be in the high 13s/low 14s with a decent driver.
Do you have a X? I'm just curious as to your impression on 5th gear cruising being at such a high rpm...
Kooldino 03-05-2008, 05:46 PM Right, I'm not talking stock, as it'll be rare that people will worry about that type of performance and still keep it stock.
I hear ya. Most people don't buy an evo to keep it stock. They buy it for the potential.
With it stock, being 200lbs. heavier then the VIIII and with similar gearing to the VIIII you're probably right it would be in the high 13s/low 14s with a decent driver.
And then everyone would cry about how "slow" the car was, regardless of the amount of untapped potential it has. It's a catch 22.
Do you have a X? I'm just curious as to your impression on 5th gear cruising being at such a high rpm...
Still awaiting mine (Phantom Black GSR won't be here until april), but I went in a ride in one. It's very similar in gear ratio to my current car (which has more power than a stock X), and yes, it's damn annoying to be at 3800rpm while cruising on the highway for hours on end.
And if you think that's bad, I once lost 5th gear 4 hours away from home (at Summit Point raceway) and had to drive up i-95 in 4th gear. That was a treat. :(

any updates on price & when they r ready to ship
The upper pipe jig and intake jig are ready to start rolling them out, we're just waiting on the MAF flanges to get done.
I'll be making the lower IC pipe jig tonight/tomorrow. Once that's done, we'll have pricing and start taking pre-orders hopefully by the end of this week.
Chris is currently on the phone with the mandrel bender on the exhaust parts, so I'm sure he'll chime in shortly as well.
Josh
jdm_evo 04-15-2008, 02:29 AM any updates?
Joe@JNZFinishing 04-15-2008, 11:35 AM I know Josh is still working on getting a bender to do the exhausts lined up. I'm sure he can chime in and give an update on the situation.

As an update, YES! We're ready to pop these babies out into the mainstream!
Check out the specials on our website (www.jnztuning.net (http://www.jnztuning.net)) for details!
We've gotten 6 out in the last week (have 4 more on "order" that we're trying to knock out in quick order!) and are getting nothing but rave revues off of the units.
Get'em while they're hot!

MooseX 05-14-2008, 02:46 AM Awesome parts. Welding is TOP NOTCH omg. That single cat back could be mine:bowlol:
And I totally agree DSSA' that some new gearing would work as the power increases. With and additional 100+ whp/wtq you could easily get away with a few teeth to all 5 gears.

Chris@jnztuning 05-26-2008, 04:06 PM Lost 2hp, but gained 3tq, and why are they holding
down the upper piping?
The upper pipe was a prototype and did not have a bracket holding it to the rad support...so under boost it would pop off. We've since added a bracket to all productions pipes.
