: Specialized Tarmac Double Comp
dcasandman 04-30-2010, 06:19 PM Been thinking about upgrading my road bike to a Specialized Tarmac Double Comp Rival. I've owned several specialized bikes, but this the most expensive bike I will have ever purchased. Was wondering if anyone here owns one or has ridden this model in the past. I was hoping to get some impressions on vibration and responsiveness. I like to ride 20-50 miles at a time. This is more on the racing side than I have now, but it drop a lot of weight from my current set up. Here's a pic

ripnbst 04-30-2010, 07:09 PM What does this bike cost exactly? I would think about opportunity cost and if it outweighs the bike you currently have enough to warrant the purchase. Plus your current bike you are going to have to write off as almost a complete loss. I have never heard of a bike holding its value.
Eyler_Evo_X 04-30-2010, 07:25 PM My friend rides one of these. He swears by it. I used to pick it up with my pinkie, lol. So light!

Cost is not really an issue. This is more about how this bike rides. Im wanting to step up to the rigidity of a full carbon bike plus a 7lb weight loss. I was hoping some of our fitness guys may have one of these.

i can say 3 to 4grand.
dcasandman 05-01-2010, 03:28 AM If you want to know the bike retail is just under 3k. I've found it online for 2400. Im sure I can get the shop to match the price. I've only gotten to ride a couple miles on flat ground, so it's hard to get a good impression.
dcpatters 05-01-2010, 03:36 AM Are you set on a Specialized? I'd ask to demo it. I looked at several manufacturers but went with a Giant TCR.
dcasandman 05-01-2010, 03:48 AM ^Not really a Giant fan after owning one of their mountain bikes in the past. Plus the service at the Giant dealer here sucks, which is big deal IMO.

Gotcha. Is it hilly in Oklahoma City? If so, that chain set looks like a 53 / 39. May want a compact double.
dcasandman 05-01-2010, 03:52 AM That is a double compact!! May not be in that pick, but the one Im looking at is.
dcasandman 05-01-2010, 03:58 AM Okc is pretty flat, but I usually ride outside the city to get a hood hill day in.
dcasandman 05-01-2010, 03:15 PM Anyone ridden or currently own one?
This is what you need

xPRimNT 05-01-2010, 03:26 PM Man, I'd love a bike like this.
I've been commuting with my POS mountain bike because it's all I have and can't justify spending the cash on a new one right now. A proper tarmac road bike like this one would be awesome.
That being said, it sounds like you already have one, just not to the same level as this one. If you do it enough to make the cost worthwhile, and you're itching for an upgrade, I say just go for it. If it's only the occasional thing, you're probably fine with your current setup.
dcasandman 05-01-2010, 03:27 PM You know what I like joey. If I get a speed triple though its going to be the big boy (1000cc)in Matte black. I was actually in store last year with check in hand then changed my mind lol. With lil ones I really dont need a bike, but his bike is one of my favorites. You get a little of everything with it. A comfortable good looking bike with some decent performance. Plus, torque curve on triple begs for power wheelies, hence the reason I dont need one.

My current bike is nice I just want to go to a carbon frame. The response of a carbon bike is awsome. I just do not know if this is the bike I want. I know I dont want Trek or Giant, but Im open to other reviews.
dcpatters 05-01-2010, 05:14 PM dca, have you checked out some of the forums?

dcasandman 05-01-2010, 06:03 PM I've checked roadbikereviews, but not that one.
dcpatters 05-02-2010, 12:37 AM If you are planning 20-50 mile rides, without a lot of climbing, this bike should be fine.
dcasandman 05-02-2010, 03:34 AM What would make it a poor climbing bike??
dcpatters 05-02-2010, 09:58 PM If the Specialized was "softer" (e.g. more comfortable) and compromised stiffness on the BB area. This could hinder power transfer while out of the saddle.
The Giant I ride, is super stiff. It's a compact frame and handles beautifully.
In closing, I'm sure the Specialized will suit you fine. Once you get in the $2K - $3K range, it's all good.

this is a good point... once you get into this price range, the quality isn't going to be a problem, just little differences between manufacturers frames. Warranties and such should be solid also.
As far as stiffness and power transfer goes, I am assuming that you are going from an aluminium frame to full carbon. You will love it and it should be great for you (as long as it fits you well)
Plus, all of the frames (other than some treks) are made in Taiwan anyways.
dcasandman 05-03-2010, 03:50 PM I want to stay with specialized cause their 54 frame fits me perfect, but I don't want to blow 3k if it's a bad bike. I was thinking about buying a full carbon kestrel, bur started reading bad frame issues since the got sold to fuji.
Rosshole 05-10-2010, 07:34 PM Did you buy it?
dcasandman 05-10-2010, 07:36 PM ^Not yet. My rule is lose about 5 more lbs then I deserve it.
dcasandman 06-11-2010, 03:56 AM Im actually considering on of these 2 bikes after givin them both a try little more price, but they are incredible.

dcpatters 06-11-2010, 05:37 AM Any reason you want a TT bike? Two totally different frame-sets.
dcasandman 06-11-2010, 11:28 AM I have a decent bike now. Im trying to decide if I want a TT bike for tris or just upgrade to a nicer bike and just use that.
ak47m203 06-11-2010, 11:40 AM http://archive.perfectduluthday.com/green%20cab%20with%20tan%20top.jpg
go to China town... lot's of this.
Rosshole 06-11-2010, 04:26 PM how is that 5 pounds going?
You should own that shit by now.
dcasandman 06-11-2010, 05:53 PM Im well under it now actually. Im 8lbs from my goal weight. I just can't make up my mind on what bike. Started at 203 January. Im 176 as of today. Just trying to get to 168. I was at 185 when I first posted this.
mike o 06-11-2010, 06:10 PM nice work with the weight loss!
dcasandman 06-11-2010, 06:16 PM ^Shit load of hard work all done the right way. I figure I got another 8 months to look how I want.
mike o 06-11-2010, 07:42 PM my cousin was 280-300lbs iin high school. even at 6'5, it wasnt a good 300lbs. he took to biking and became a vegitarian. he is now between 195 to 205lbs, rides the pmc(pan mass challege) as well as several other events and does cyclo-cross. he is now normal. he eats meat. he has also been able to maintain his weight. i hope you find a healthy weight range you are comfortable with. you should check out cyclo-cross. he really enjoys the change and the challenge.
dcasandman 06-24-2010, 02:09 AM Just picked up a Cervelo P2. I freakin love it. Road 30 on it. Little hard to get use to but it's fast.Got it custom fitted to me took about 2 hours. The shop said a proper fit is worth 5 minutes over 25 miles alone. Also got lifetime adjustments and tune up which are 70 a pop.
Here's a pick from the web site. More to come when I get my ass kicked in Branson.

Rosshole 06-24-2010, 01:54 PM Very cool... but now you are a snobby cervelo owner.
but yes, a proper fit is HUGE!
dcasandman 06-24-2010, 02:33 PM ^I hope I don't get a stereotype from it lol. I tried trek and cannondale all set up just for me at same shop. Cervelo was instantly comforable, and price for equipment is hard to beat.
ripnbst 06-24-2010, 03:03 PM What are you going to do with your old road bike?
My buddies and I are trying to make a 60 mile ride this weekend and I always end up borrowing someones bike. Thinking about getting my own.
dcasandman 06-24-2010, 03:12 PM I would consider saling it as I'll probably upgrade anyway. How tall are you? It was a 1400 dollar bike 3 years ago. All components have been upgraded to 105s except crankset. All bugs are worked out and it rides smooth. Im 5'9 and it fits me perfect with a 32-34 leg length. The frame size is 54. I can take some pics if you are interested.
hotdog 06-24-2010, 03:16 PM You are fitting into the mental image I have of you quite nicely.
dcasandman 06-24-2010, 03:18 PM And what is that hotdog, and you don't have to be nice Im not a puss.

No, I just always give my cervelo buddies shit. They are sweet rides and I almost got one, but I felt more comfortable on the Felt b12.
hotdog 06-25-2010, 02:41 PM And what is that hotdog, and you don't have to be nice Im not a puss.
Well, it's not a BAD thing, it's just... I can imagine a thread entitled "Who deposited all this money into my checking account?", made by you, which outlines how you were checking your bank account today, after driving your Cobb-built Evo X to the bank with your wife following in her Excursion towing your new splurge-purchase JetSki, and you noticed all this money in your checking account, and you're looking for help discovering where it all came from.
And no one here would bat an eye, because you're about two steps away from being that disconnected from how much you make.
But, it's not a bad thing. I love you for it. Every time you buy some toy, and post about it, then flip the page and say you have kids and couldn't possibly be rich, I just laugh, a little, tiny, bit.
