time to spin up the FTL drive and prepare for a jump!

*reads article*

FTL drive? Is that some kind of sliders reference or something?

battlestar galactica.. in reference to one of the only really bogus technologies in the series.. the fact that they can just spin up the FTL drive (lol it should really be FTW because it is) and 'jump' the ship to different coordinates.. quite a few times they'd jump entire fleets of vehicles across the universe just because they can.

I don't think the fighter jet type things "vipers" have the ability though.. Rob, correct me if I'm wrong you nerd :P

How is that different from how scotty and company would beam people up? Range?

well it's a hell of a lot more realistic (mind you I'm not a trekkie at all so I don't knwo the specifics) for one.

I think the range is infinite (if you have enough power.. there's a linear (maybe exponential dunno) relationship between power needed for a certain jump distance).. but it's also just ships that have the ability to jump.. you can't just beam up a person, or beam a person somewhere, etc. Like I said, the little fighter jet type things don't have the ability to jump if I recall correctly.. reconnaissance ships do, and all the huge ships do of course.

for a fleet to jump, they have to exchange coordinates, spool up the FTL drive, do a synchronized (or close to it) jump, then check for interference at the destination (like another ship or a planet or something).

Very cool, but I'd love to just see some real progress made towards moving humans off this planet and out to the stars, whether it is thru hibernation techniques or a breakthrough in propulsion techniques.

@ Kansei (http://www.evoxforums.com/forums/member.php?u=39) - Cool. I wish I could do that. If I could, I'd have to check for interference between your buttcheeks before I took the jump.

@ Katya4me (http://www.evoxforums.com/forums/member.php?u=26) - IIRC, we have a goal for colonizing the moon by 2020 or so.

^^ actually you can't check for interference until you've landed. a slight problem

Gee, isn't that a nice thought...
