I know this was mentioned in another thread but I wanted more opinions.Almost 1000 miles and that smell will not go away.I am not hard on the clutch(excessive slipping) but I do DRIVE the car.Just backing up and minimun slippage and it SMELLS.Driving 30 mins and when I stop it smells.I've even looked under the car to see if I had a plastic bag, dead animal etc.. underneath. how many of you have this still going on?

Try the underarm antiperspirant gel works for me! LOL:jk:

Isn't that the catalytic converters? It should tone down after awhile. Maybe you've got a leak in your exhaust system somewhere.

No its closer to brake or clutch type smell.converters usually have a rotten egg smell.

No more new car smell... Phew car smell instead:nopity:

Doesn't sound normal to me. Dealer time. :(

Do you ride the clutch continuously? (no offense intended) Just trying to work out your driving style. I tend to have my foot 'resting' on the clutch (not quite riding).
Is there any play at all in the clutch?

Mine's got the same issue, so it's not cat related.

It's strange actually, you can smell the clutch when it slips, but this smells different then when you launch the car or slip the clutch really hard..

Imagine going past a dumpster behind a restaurant in the middle of August and you've got the smell. The first time I smelled it I thought it was something dead as well.

I'll let you know if it goes away after we put the ACT in.

I have heard alot of people talking of the smell. I have no issues with a smell or burnt clutch smell. I do have the second gear notch though.

No smell coming from my car either. I will admit though, it was a little smelly after I clocked just over 800 miles but that is because I launched it a couple times that day and it lingered on until the next day.

my second gear notch feeling is almost gone now but third is still there.I am starting to wonder if the brakes are dragging? could cause a smell.Or maybe some thing to do with the diffs?I have been really easy on the clutch.I drove about 15 mins on fwy, slowed down for traffic and could smell something.I wasn't even using the clutch.:wtfsign:

I noticed that smell for the first 3 days after roughly 400 and miles and sitting for 2 days in the garage due to snow no more stinky.

ok so I got the smell first time last weekend. I got it when I stuck it in reverse and reversed about 40meters. The smell went away and hasn't been smelt again. Perhaps its something to do with the reverse gear or lack of?

I had the same smell for the first 50 miles of having the car after that nothing.
Dude go to the dealers, u shouldnt have that smell with 1000 miles.
Have u ever driven stick before? U might be riding the clutch.

Kooldino

If so many people are having this smell issue, I kind of doubt that it's due to driver error.

Yes I have driven over 100,000 miles in vehicles with a clutch. Its not how I drive.I may be overly sensitive to the smell though because I can smell really good.(I don't hear that well though)

I had that for awhile as well, it went away in time.

I had a smell for first few hundred miles. It smelled like shipping oil (if thats what its called, its oil used when shipping cars overseas to protect from salt, especially on Nissans and Mitsubishis). That went away, and now I notice a smell, similar to the original smell, anytime I launch the car above the turbo lag rpm range. I have driven MT as long as I've been driving, and have never had a problem launching, but often when launching I leave a cloud of white/grey smoke behind me (not the black rich burn powder), followed by a burnt metal smell the rest of the day. It seems like the clutch is only rated for 1/3 the torque the evo puts out. ACT or HKS should straighten this out.
Is it possible that your resting your foot on the clutch, or hand on the shifter?

Nope...Most of the smell has gone but I still get it when I have to slip the clutch, like in reverse or if you have to stop and go on an uphill.I can only imagine what it would do if I launched this car... By the way resting your hand on the shifter for a long time can wear the shift forks and syncros.

I had the smell for a little while as well as the 2nd gear notch. After 600 miles the smell is gone, I am used to the clutch, and the 2nd gear notch is still there. Its all good.:wackoff:

notch should only be there while tranny is cold. Once it warms up, it shouldn't be so notchy

Well, the smell is your clutch cooking. Just confirmed
Now everytime my turbo spools up, my clutch slips. Apparently that was the smell the whole time (for me). If you read back earlier in the post, mine's been doing it since I left the lot. But has not been as bad after miles were put on it. I only ever tried pushing the car off the line once after about 1500 or 2000 miles and I said I'd never do it again b/c it smoked. I guess that should've been a clue that something was wrong. I've complained about the clutch feeling underrated (for the amount of torque the evo has) since I got it. I guess these should've been clues that something was wrong.
I had to go to the dealership for the slip and they had me test drive another evo, and the first thing I said was wow, this clutch is light, mine doesn't feel like this. One of my favorite things about the car was how tight the clutch was. So apparently, that's a problem.
Don't live with "the smell" thinking whatever it is it'll cook off. In my case it was my clutch cooking off, so get that checked.

How does everyone else's clutches feel? (i know this is relative, but I mean a pretty big difference, my clutch had resistance, you had to push it, the other one was so light that I barely had to rest my foot on it to depress the clutch)
For those with a stiffer clutch, have you noticed "The smell" ???

toytec
05-06-2008, 09:13 PM
My clutch is definitely a little stiff.I though this would be normal on a high performance vehicle.

PDXEvo
05-07-2008, 12:08 AM
I would say my clutch is not stiff at all, but I am coming from a car that was running a Twin Plate Exedy, so I am not the best person to ask. I am not however getting any of the cooking clutch issues at all.

SiC

The clutch doesn't feel that stiff for me either, I was running a twin plate OS Giken on my GTR. The only time I had smell coming from my clutch on the EvoX was the first 2 days or so. After that I've never had any smell coming from the clutch.

From Automobile mag.
The 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer (http://www.automobilemag.com/am/2008/mitsubishi/lancer/index.html) Evo X's raucous in-line four, on the other hand, could wake the dead. Inside the car, it sounds like a blender. Outside, a jet helicopter. It builds power more progressively than the STI - to a peak of 291 hp - and pulls frantically all the way to its rev limiter. You'll never be surprised by the rev limiter, though - the engine is so vocal that you don't even need to look at the tach. You will be checking the gauges, however, to see if the engine is still running when you're trying to take off gently up a steep hill: the Evo's 2.0-liter engine - the smallest in the group - is powerless off idle. To complicate things, the Evo's clutch fills the air with the scent of burnt lining after even moderate slippage, so slow starts on steep grades are a tricky proposition involving lots of throttle, a modicum of revs, and a measured dose of patience.

from Edmunds
The Mitsubishi Evo GSR requires a bit of finesse at the launch to avoid bogging down or, conversely, boiling the clutch into a putrid haze. In the end, it covers 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and the quarter-mile in 13.6 seconds at 101.3 mph.

There is something wrong here...

I have SST model, and smell was present for around the first 700 miles, after that it seems to have gone away, (now done 1100 miles) - because mine is SST I was guessing that the smell came from the brakes, or it smelt like hot tyres? .....

Robotix Junior

Perhaps the smell is just a coating on the Clutch that is burning off?

Well, I got my car back today and it feels completely different with the new clutch and the reflash. I got to look at the old clutch/flywheel and have you ever seen exhaust tips that had gotten extremely hot and turned blue? That is what my flywheel looked like, and the clutch plate was purple. Insane.
Parts guy said clutch looked like it had 20,000 miles worth of abuse, not 2,000 miles worth of street driving. Something was definitely wrong. Well, its all replaced now and I'm back on the road. Sweet.

I hope it wasn't the clutch since they should be enclosed in the SST box.

Was this a factory warranty job? or did you upgrade to a different clutch?

Hmmm...

I might have to go to the dealership and just depress the other clutch pedals, see what they feel like. I've noticed my clutch pedal is quite difficult to push in and I've also been worried that my clutch is wearing excessively quick. Thanks for the info Kwiq

I'm just glad to hear Mitsubishi is honoring the warranty. Lately I've been hearing all sorts of stories about Evo warranties being voided left and right even if you haven't abused/modded your car.:(

I think some guys may not know the smell of the burnt clutch. In a brand new evo, the light burning smell you smell is not clutch, it's a combination of undercoating, sealants, new fluids, etc. Not clutch. Unless of course you're either racing or are inexperienced driving a manual.

There is alot of people talking about clutches burning up before 2k miles...now i know for sure that there isn't That many bad drivers here...There is a Big problem here...And im hearing that there is alot of dealers that dont want to cover it.

To me this just seems like a flashback to whenever the 03 VIII's came out. Guys were burning through clutches like there was no tomorrow. The main factor is driving style. If you slip the clutch too much, the clutch will glaze. Once glazed bad enough, the clutch can't hold the power anymore.

Don't get me wrong, Evo clutches aren't as strong as they could be, but burning them out so soon is all driver dependent. The X's clutch is basically a very similar clutch to those used in 03-06 VIII's and IX's. It's organic i.e. it's not meant to be launched. Also, the clutch is designed to be the weakest link in the drivetrain. Couple that to the fact that it's extremely difficult to launch the X well and you have these kinds of threads. Trust me though, it's much cheaper to replace a clutch than a transfer case! It's only a matter of time before we start seeing one of those threads.

My 04 VIII was my first manual car and I ended up changing the clutch at 36,000 miles. Not because it was slipping, but because I got a Shep tranny put in and killed two birds with one stone. A lot of this 36,000 miles was with 350 whp.
