: Wisdom Teeth
fishstix 05-21-2010, 06:34 AM When I got my braces 6 years ago I was told that I'd need my wisdom teeth removed since they are growing sideways. Well, today I finally noticed the wisdom teeth. One is kind of poking through, but hasn't broken the skin. It's kind of swollen around there and very sensitive. I really don't feel like getting them removed this summer. Anyone else here get theirs removed? When and how was the pain and recover time?
elementalcode 05-21-2010, 06:44 AM I was in the same boat as you. Had braces, dentist said ill need them removed. Fast forward few years and im 19. Wisdom teeth are growing in. I procrastinate and never get them examined to whether or not ill need them removed (mind you when i was 13 i was told for sure ill need them removed)
couple years go by and one day (im 21 by then) i walk into the denist's office for a check up. Dentist looks at my teeth after the checkup and congratulates me on not having to get them removed. ( assuming that i went to the specialist to determine this ) I chuckle and tell him i never went as i was too much of a pussy to go through with it :o
He looks at me and tells me im one lucky fucker as somehow they grew in perfectly in place (which shouldnt be possible as my mouth literally had no room left for them :freak:)
Idk if my rambling helps but why not wait and see what happens. Worst comes to worst ur mouth starts swelling up and you get them pulled. Who knows maybe your a freak like me and will get lucky :)
fishstix 05-21-2010, 06:47 AM Waiting is bad because the tooth becomes denser as you age. This means longer recovery times. Also if the wisdom teeth collide with the root of one of your other molars then it can cause an cyst or something which basically eats away at the molar's root.
elementalcode 05-21-2010, 06:52 AM this i did not know. Anyways everyone i know who has had theirs removed recovered relatively quickly. Most people i know have had 2 removed at a time as getting all 4 removed in one procedure makes recovery around a week versus 2 removed is something within the range of 2 days
DynastyX 05-21-2010, 07:11 AM I had all of mine removed at age 16, took several weeks for the pain to go away. It also left four holes in my gum which I had to rinse several times a day (for like two months) until they "closed up". Even now there are indentions left from the surgery, not huge pockets like before but there are still holes... If you don't *have* to, don't.
Guardian262 05-21-2010, 07:29 AM Get them done quickly. I had one that grew in sideways and it resulted in compacting my bottom front teeth together. You already went through braces, so I would hate to see you have done it for nothing.
Rmondoh 05-21-2010, 02:33 PM Definitely get them taken out when you can. I waited because I didn't see any difference. I finally got mine taken out probably 7 years ago and the only reason was that the roots of one of the lower ones was so long that it was growing into a nerve line in the back of my mouth. It hurt like hell to the point where I didn't want to eat because it was so painful. Obviously my bottom wisdom teeth were impacted, which is how they were able to dig into the nerve line. Don't let that happen man.
Mine never actually broke the surface, but since one of them was really killing me, I had all 4 taken out (might as well). I got knocked out for the procedure so I didn't notice any pain. Recovery wasn't too bad except for the part about not really being able to eat solid food. You also have to keep changing out the gauze. When you do eat something, you have to use this little plastic squirter syringe to clean the areas where your teeth were because you don't want food getting stuck in there and much less have the wound heal up with food stuck in there. It's not hard at all though.
Whitewind 05-21-2010, 02:46 PM I am 28 and I got my tops removed 10 years ago. My bottoms are still there and I am going in the 27th of this month to get them pulled/banged out. Mine grew in strait but dentist still wants to pull it something about the root. I put it off a long, long time now and Im going pay the 600 and get both pulled on bottom. The tops did not hurt at all, but I did hear the bottom are A LOT worse. I'll let you know. Just keep the socket clean! Don't get dry socket, I heard it hurts.
ripnbst 05-21-2010, 07:17 PM I had mine removed in highschool. the longer you wait the worse it gets and you risk having their growth screw up your straight teeth. I would get them removed ASAP as the medication you get is phenomenal and you're only down for like 2 days. Its really not a big deal.
sgtpruitt 05-21-2010, 07:20 PM Best 4 days of my life. Try to get Lortab. Better than percs. Not that I am a pill head or anything.
kidneythief13 05-21-2010, 07:23 PM I had mine removed last year. I had no pain whatsoever. The most painful part was when they pricked a vein on the back of my hand for the IV before surgery. I was prescribed 40 percocets & only used 5 (ridiculous they gave me so many). I had no nausea.
Basically, I showed up at the office. They put me on the dentist chair, pricked my hand for the IV. Under 1 minute later, I was out. Woke up sitting on a recliner in the recovery room dazed out of my mind. I couldn't eat anything besides ice cream for 2 or 3 days & slept most of them. Blood kept oozing out of my mouth, so I constantly had to change the gauze they gave me & sleep on my side w/ extra paper towels to absorb the blood. My cheeks were extremely puffy for a few days & my face had green bruises for about a week. I had to rinse my mouth often w/ salt water to get all the nasty shit out of my sockets. Absolutely no negative effects.
Scooter 05-21-2010, 07:26 PM The Navy took mine out (all 4) when I was in A School... Joy! Just do it. Yeah you'll be sipping your meals through a straw for a few days, but then you don't have to worry about that anymore.
Whitewind 05-21-2010, 07:28 PM Yeah, that is how I was with my tops. They knocked me out but this time for bottom not going under I will be awake! Woohoo! Its a dentist not oral surgeon this time too. But I'll save 700 bucks!

Yeah I really felt sorry for the folks that got theirs done in boot camp. They got about 8 hours to recoup and got thrown right back into it. If I had a weaker stomach, I would have yacked as I watched them do push-ups with blood draining out of their mouths. Lucky for me, the dentist looked at my sideways one on the X-ray and said "There is no way i am touching that one. Let an oral surgeon take care of it when you get to your unit."
I didn't hurt that much. My cheek hurt more than the valleys left behind because he used my cheek as a fulcrum when prying the sideways one out with this huge prybar. I was awake when they did mine but whatever they gave me in the IV ensured that I didn't have a care in the world.
Eyler_Evo_X 05-21-2010, 07:38 PM I had horribly impacted wisdom teeth and they had to crack my lower jaw in two places to get them out. It was the worst dental procedure I've ever gone through. Plus, they only put me in twilight, so I can still remember the way it sounded when they broke my jaw. I was down for a few days and swollen for almost a month. Then I got an infection. It blew.
Good luck with yours! :)
Scooter 05-21-2010, 07:42 PM Mine were taken out in October 1982 at the Great Lakes Naval training center by a guy that said to me... "See how they are angled, these are called 'rollouts'. We'll be done in 20 minutes. 8 hours later he was still working on #4 and had damn near dislocated my jaw. They had to sew the inside of my cheeks to the holes so they could stop most of the bleeding. I got two days off and then I was back to A School.
Good thing is I got to skip one of the inspections... Captain came in while I was sleeping and asked why I had the medical chit taped to my bunk, so my bunkmate told him the story. Captain gave the order that I was not to be disturbed for the next day on pain of death! Funny thing is I had 4 pair of boondockers under the covers with me as my bunkmates were too lazy to shine them that day.

I did a lot of reading and people strongly advise using an oral surgeon. The pain and healing time is all dependent on who's making the cuts, and the majority of reviews I've read that have been to a dentist rather than oral surgeon said they were in serious pain afterwards while some others who went to the oral surgeon said they went to work the next day.
Whitewind 05-21-2010, 07:52 PM I know man but I can take pain. 700 bucks I'll deal with it. I know 5 people who have been to this dentist and they all had no problem with pain afterwards on wisdom teeth. Also there not one around me for 200 miles.
-Evolved Boost- 05-21-2010, 09:00 PM I got mine done when I was younger...and they where all impacted, with some under the bone (if not all, I forget). So they completly knocked me out. And for a couple days had to sleep on a reclining sofa chair...couldn't lay down cause of all the bleeding. Kept having to switch the gauze pad in my mouth as it filled.
So I guess it really depends on if there impacted or not. Could be quick and back up in a couple days or could take longer if there impacted bad.
livnpaintball2 05-21-2010, 09:08 PM 4 of mine cut out at 18, took a couple weeks to heal, had a dry socket. It sucked, get it done now and dont wait. It wont get any better.
NHLFan3507 05-22-2010, 12:34 AM I had all four yanked when I was 18. They were all impacted, so they put me out for surgery. When I remember waking up, I was at home. I was given painkillers for a few days. The pain lasted for close to a week, but I ended up with two dry sockets. Those lasted for another two weeks. Basically three weeks of eating soup and mashed potatoes...While it sucked, I'm glad I had it done then before they came in and would do it all over again.
px.evo 05-22-2010, 12:41 AM I all had mine pulled this year. I never got to doing it and they grew out. Wasnt a big deal until they grew enough outward that I started biting my own cheeks from the inside. Ouch. So yes, remove before they develop any problems.
Excalibur 05-22-2010, 12:48 AM I HATED my wt removal. Some of the worst aching pains ever. I had mine done by a military doctor though and had horrible drugs. Motrin is horrible.
I hate the dentist when they don't put me to sleep. Usually even with the strongest numbing agents (shots), I still feel the pain. I wish they could kill all the nerves in all of my teeth, lol.
Whitewind 05-27-2010, 10:55 PM Got mine yanked today and right now I am still numb and cannot feel a damn thing lol. Both came out without a problem as one peice. Was so fucking wierd them pulling on it and prying on it. Felt odd. But so far I am good.
Whitewind 05-28-2010, 08:16 PM I have not had to take any pain meds at all! I just taken some Advil but that helps with healing part. only cost me $440. Better than $1600 that the oral surgeon wanted.
scarpaccio 06-03-2010, 01:25 AM Dude, definitely go to an oral surgeon. I went to an oral surgeon back in 2003 and he medicated the wound with a slow dissolving pain killer. He was also an MD/DDS. If you are in Chicagoland then PM me.
Excalibur 06-03-2010, 01:34 AM Guess mine hurt b/c the military did it.
