: Excessive driveline slop!?
Magnummmmmmmmmm 06-15-2010, 12:41 AM Just wondering if anyone feels that their X has excessive "slop" or "play" in the drive line. if so, what causes it and is it ok?
the back story-
So i bought my 08 GSR about 2 months ago with 12,000 miles on her. the car was flawless and showed no signs of abuse. After 4,000 spirited miles i feel like I have begun to notice alot of play in the drive line with occasional clunking. I participated in an auto X yesterday (Sunday 6-13-2010), and afterwords it seems worse than before but maybe I'm just more sensitive to it after feeling guilty for driving it like a rental car all day.
Today I went to the local Merchants tire and auto center in christiansburg where i knew they would allow me free use of the lift. With the car in the air and in gear (no e-brake), i could rotate any wheel and hear the clunking from what appears to be the transfer case. the play seemed a bit much so i went to the Mitsu dealer. 2 service reps drove the car with me in the passanger seat and both times we were able to replicate the slop and clunking. they said they wanted a certified tech to look at it so i have an appointment for next monday (6-21-10). I will update after i have it looked at.
But in the meantime, any ideas? am i just being a worry wart?
Thanks
Jonathan

chef_tony_t 06-16-2010, 09:06 PM that doesnt sound good, i would be a bit worried if its a "clunking" sound coming from your transfer case. keep us updated
KARo7 06-16-2010, 09:12 PM Ive had my car on a lift also and moved the wheels but dint hear any clunking....are they other evo x's in the area? maybe you should compare with them...
ddawg1130 06-16-2010, 09:15 PM Damn dude... gl with that.
Please keep us posted as to what the service rep says

There are 3 2010s at the dealer right now. I suppose on Monday i can ask to compare them myself just to make sure the techs don't jerk me around.
ripnbst 06-16-2010, 10:23 PM Whatever you do do not say, "After the autocross I felt like it got worse." Is your car competely stock?
Keep us posted as my car clunks when going from a forward gear to reverse and reverse to 1st. No, its not the typical gear change R-1 noise. Its a clunk that sounds like a clutch type dif locking.
proracer718 06-17-2010, 07:08 AM Please keep us posted, I am also having a very similar problem with my car. I have the transfer case whine but no one can seem to figure out why I am getting that clunking sound as well.
jay's08x 06-20-2010, 12:46 AM well i had my transfer case replaced cause i had a whine... after further investigation my x case was leaking.... but i have a clunk now too and i didn't have it before it is only when engaging the clutch in first or reverse or decelerating under 15 mph and putting it in neutral
dealership is two hours away though...fail

that sucks bro, my mechanic noticed something was leaking and we looked around and turned out the seal on the transfer case was busted so he took care of it before something serious happened
boostin20 07-04-2010, 04:35 AM I've had the clunking sound when I release the clutch quickly; it sounded like it's coming from the rear diff. I checked play in the rear diff and center diff last year (comparing to mitsu's guide) and couldn't find anything. I didn't check in the trans though. It never got worse over the course of a year, so I don't give it much thought anymore.

I also have that clunkin sound from the rear diff. If you accelerate in first and press the clutch to stop quicly you can hear the clank in the rear. you think thats normal? I can also hear a clank from the rear when i accelerate quickly as the car is already going at speed, say 45mph.
wisniaPl 09-13-2010, 02:34 AM i have clunk when shifting gear really quick or just jerking o the gas.... its coming from rear diff area Im 100% sure that if i put stiffer engine mount it will go away because u can feel engine movement
SiliconTek 09-13-2010, 02:36 AM Driveshaft bushings and differential spacers will make things much nicer. ~$120 best first mod you can do that cost money.
steelbahamut 09-13-2010, 03:21 AM I have solid rear diff bushings and solid driveshaft bushings, still get the clunk. If anything its louder lol.

Ouch! Mine got even quieter!
Mojito 09-13-2010, 04:16 AM but i have a clunk now too and i didn't have it before it is only when engaging the clutch in first or reverse or decelerating under 15 mph and putting it in neutral

I have something similar to that. I think it appeared after my engine rebuid. I'm talking to my mechanic now.
felibon 09-13-2010, 01:31 PM So for some stiffer diff mounts help and for some others it didnt?
Jeremy@SSP 09-13-2010, 01:50 PM Mine knocks a bit, but I have a MR. I installed the front and both side mounts and now it seems more noticeable. I just got the rear engine mount hoping it'll help with it.
dragon831 09-13-2010, 02:05 PM same problem here : i hear a clunk coming from the rear of the car when i accelerate. For ex: I'm in 4th coasting at 45mph. i take my foot off the gas to start slowing down. As soon as i give it gas again, i hear a clunk coming from the rear. and it's a 100% of time thing. Regardless of my speed, if i take my foot off the gas, then replant it back, i hear a clunk like if something is engaging or something. it's low enough to where i dont hear it if my music's on.
wisniaPl 09-14-2010, 01:56 AM so wtf is the mystery clunk??
EvoXMan85 09-18-2010, 11:34 PM Since I first purchased my GSR evo X back in 2008, the transmission even then felt and sounded clunky. I thought I had done something wrong to it, but realized after a while the transmission always has been and will be noisy when power is applied/ taken off while in gear. Even in low rpm, changing gears I've been hearing this clanking sound, like something is loose in there...haha. Not very confidence inspiring, but whatevs... I'm not worried about it as long as it's under warranty and it doesn't fall out from under the car one day. Yeah let us know what you find out about your tranny sounds!
pistolpete69916 09-18-2010, 11:59 PM I get this clunk in 1st / 2nd if im going below 20mph. If im "on it" shifting smooth, but fast etc on the highway, then i dont get the clunk. But if i shift like a video game and pop the clutch then i get the clunk.
irmerm 09-20-2010, 10:59 PM I get the clunk sometimes going to/from reverse. Also a whine sometimes. fun fun.
lousevoxmr 09-20-2010, 11:49 PM i dont even remember the color of my car, hard to remember what it sounds like lol...
: on a nother note
both my buddys gsr cluncks when the let go the clutch, revers or foward..
even the after market brake pads ...
Magnummmmmmmmmm 09-29-2010, 03:18 AM Well the noise and slop haven't gotten any worse yet. the dealership THINKS its ok. lol they don't know. i have decided to get used to it. other than the driveline lash and the rattling glovebox, these cars are great!

Well since there are a number of people having the same "problems" then i assume its OK and normal. I get this clunk too. Drove a friends X and his has the same slop. And for the people that don't realize it, well youre exhaust is too fucking loud, or youre already way to used to the clunk. Or... your car is one of the few evos that the mitsu techs actually payed attention to while building / installing the driveline components.

lol
TheNEWB 09-30-2010, 02:56 PM I had the clunk in My car. When Marco at Magnus took it apart he said a small part of the driver side tranny mount was not installed. But I did have my tranny out of the car when Mitsu rebuilt the tranny.
Call Marco at Magnus. He may have a solution for this. If u had the tranny out of the car.
