: Buying a helmet soon
linste 06-19-2010, 03:35 AM I'm looking to purchase the HJC AR-10 helmet for track. Any reviews?
Also does anybody know if you can legally use a SA rated helmet for motorcycles? Will probably be getting a bike soon too.
joshesevo22 06-19-2010, 03:42 AM Hjc helmets are pretty good usually. Hjc carbon fiber helmet saved my dads life in dirtbike accident, it cracked but not in half like a other helmet would of.... he would of been dead if it wasnt for HJC! thats why i think so highly of them :p sorry for me rambling!

How much WHP are you running that you need a helmet??
rockn82 06-19-2010, 03:58 AM I have gone 170 yards on my face/head with an HJC CL-15 on. I have to say I owe it my face if not my life. I has pics still : )
I have the HJC FS15 Carbon. It looks badass and works as advertised

its not really the whp but more the speed. If you crash at 120 on a track you're gonna want a helmet. autox prob not. but all of them still require you to have one for the event.

yeah the carbon fiber one looks siiiick but can't afford it.
any info on using for motorcycle? i heard an SA helmet will have a slightly narrower field of vision. anyone know how much narrower?
legendary_wraps 06-19-2010, 04:22 AM if you have a cheap head...... put it in a cheap helmet...
IndyEvo 06-19-2010, 04:44 AM only helmet i wear, goes on my dick.
lanasa1980 06-19-2010, 05:17 AM I will have to look into one. I have always wanted to do one
whitecomet 06-19-2010, 02:34 PM make sure it is snell aproved not some cheap ass job.
bradze 06-19-2010, 04:55 PM buy a motorsports helmet. forget about motorcycles. spend your money on lapping, or better yet build a spec miata, thatll be a lot more fun.
Yxd68 06-19-2010, 05:08 PM Most SA helmets are not legal for street use on motorcycles - depends on the model and the width of visual opening. However I've NEVER heard of a cop checking the type or certification of a helmet worn by a biker.
If it's street legal, it will have a DOT sticker on it. No sticker, not street legal.
Rogue 06-21-2010, 04:16 PM I would make sure that the helmet meets some standardized requirement, fits well and has good visibility. I had one helmet that felt so tight I would get faint, so I had to sell it, even though it was pretty bad ass.
Feffman 06-22-2010, 06:13 PM Assuming you are using the helemt for track days in a car, you may want to make sure it has an "SA" rating. A number of track organizations are requiring SA2000 or SA2005 helmets. The new SA2010 will be out in October. The good people at Simpson Racing can help you.

newcomer81 06-22-2010, 06:39 PM The new SA2010 will be out in October.
The HJC AR-10 is SA2005 so your good in that regard for the next several years but as Feffman said the new standard is due out soon so stay clear of SA2000s
The SAs are rated for multiple impacts as well as roll cage impact. M (for motorcycle duh) are not rated for multiple nor roll cage impacts.
now, not being rated does not necessarily mean they have not been tested for it. several models the only difference in construction is the flame retardant inner lining required for SA.
M require a larger field of vision than SA, but again just because it is SA doesn't mean it has a narrower field of vision.
kuvesh 06-23-2010, 04:08 PM motorcycle helmets a different to car racing helmets.
motorcycle helmets designed for rolling and bouncing on the ground.
car racing helmet is for one big impact.

motorcycle helmets designed for rolling and bouncing on the ground.
car racing helmet is for one big impact. You got that backwards - M helmets are tested, thus designed for, a single, large impact while SA (specialty automotive) helmets are designed for multiple impacts, impacts against roll cage bars, and for fire protection.
Additionally most SA helmets have options for HANS devices.
I use the Simpson Sting ray. Fits tight but not enough to give you a headache like some do. It nice and light, one of the lightest.
Best of all the price is not that high, if you look around you will find a deal.
DarkSideEwok 06-27-2010, 03:16 PM make sure to try it on before you buy it.
ripnbst 06-27-2010, 05:52 PM Saferacer.com has good helmets at good prices.
If you can try it on great, if not measure your head and check sizing chart prior to ordering.
SiliconTek 10-23-2010, 02:06 AM I just purchased one of these today, the SA2010 version. New vents and a sleeker design. I just hope I can get it delivered in time before my next event!
orthojoe 10-23-2010, 02:30 AM I have the white version of this helmet. Fits well, comfortable, good ventilation. There are more expensive models out there, but this one was well rated in terms of comfort and safety. I use this helmet at HPDEs, where our sessions are about 20-25min. Never felt uncomfortable even on 100 degree track days. My son seems to like the helmet too....

And the new one has even more ventilation, nice to hear! Did you try it on first or measure and purchase? If you measured how was the fitment versus their sizing chart?
orthojoe 10-23-2010, 02:45 AM I did the measurement at home, THEN i went to the store to try on myself and the measurements for the sizing chart were correct. It's still better to try on yourself, but if you order online, just make sure they have a decent return policy. Everyone has a uniquely shaped head IMO.
johnk 10-23-2010, 05:51 AM believe that!!! you have to try on the helmet, just because you have measured your noggin' doesn't mean it will fit right!
Just go to your local bicycle store and try on cycle helmets, some of them will not 'feel' right at all,
