The interface is pretty self explanitory. You can drag your CSV files to the panel on the left, then enter the appropriate data in the box that appears and your graph should appear. There are several graph options and those can be accessed from the menu at the top. There are only a few cars in the data file as of the initial release but as soon as a few more people test it and get me data on other vehicles I will add more.

Make sure it's a single run in the log, from about 2k to 6k RPM. I have a 4k RPM run and it does the same thing. I have some crappy 2k-7k log and it displays fine.

EvoScan does the same thing with their power/torque graph option.. if you don't have what it expects to calculate power, it won't graph.

You can just edit the HTML in notepad with the settings you want then you don't have to enter them in everytime.

Yes it would.

He should be calculating Torque by the rate in change of RPM. Then calculate HP by simply doing Tq * RPM / 5252 = Hp

Worth the wait for sure. Also can you add dyno correction values for different dyno's from the old VDR? :) That would be excellent.

Cant add them from VDR into my app. His correction factors would be different from mine since my math is a little different from his.

Ive got a guy thats going to compile a BUNCH of dynojet data or me so we can work on getting an even MORE accurate result than it already gives. Unless they have some weird correction factor its within 3%HP and 2%TQ. I want it dead on so the more I work on this program and the more data thats compiled ... the more dead on it will be.

For some reason the program will not display the graph on my Win 7 computer, am I missing something? It flashes something quickly once I load the run, but afterward it is a white square.

Im going to make TPS trimming adjustable. Right now if your TPS is under 92 it trims it. Im getting really close to releasing 1.0.0.4 so it will be something that goes in 1.0.0.5

Turning off TPS fixed it; it seems regardless of the run, my TPS is always around 86-87 with the pedal floored. It makes sense if the program expects 92 that it would cut out anything less.

Yeah all the ones I am putting in are reading just a bit lower than what I actually ran on Cobb's dyno. I put my car on the scales the cat scales the other day and with my ass in the car it tilted at 3820#'s I weight right at 240#'s so my car full weight is 3580# with a full tank of gas and sons car seat minus the spare tire. Most GSR's with SSS from the factory are 3590#'s stock.

All you need to log is RPM, TPS, AFR anything else is going to slow the sampling rate. Another thing to keep in mind is when you go to a dyno ... ya might want to see what correction factor they are using. Ive seen them as high as 1.31 and all that does is over inflate your numbers. Its not reading wrong ... they are just over correcting.

That is why there is a correction factor built into this application. Because EVERY dyno is different. I dont care if they are the same model sitting side by side ... they are different.

Dynos arent for publishing numbers really ... they are for comparing changes in power. I dont care if one reads 109hp on my car and I make changes and the same one reads 159 ... then I gained 50hp. Thats what they are for. They were never intended to brag about what your car makes online because comparing cars that way ... really isnt accurate. (Sorry thats my two cent ramble for the day)

But that being said ... using the same cables (Tactrix) and the same math to compare cars ... should be pretty darn close (assuming someone isnt logging on a hill).

To add to ^^^^

If you have a local dyno that you use, get out your dyno sheet and adjust the correction factor in Virtual Dyno till the curves match. Now you have an exact comparison tool.

The correction factor says STD.

STD means they arent correcting for weather conditions like barometric pressure and temp.

I would do as Golden mentioned and adjust the correction factor in VD till my graphs matched the local dyno if I wanted to compare to it.

Any chance that you can open the files with shared access? So that if I have it open with another program, it will still be able to read the file. You don't modify them at all, so Read Only should do the trick.

Brad it quit working for me all together with what you had before.
There is now some visual issue in Windows 7 as well as all my ATR runs don't show up until I highlight a spot then when I do its 0's for numbers.

Yeah working on the TPS thing and also an error when renaming a run. Its being a pain though ... its the things you think are going to be simple that are a royal pain.

zoom out? I didnt put zoom in there ... umm unless the graph library by default allows it.

Ok ... Ive got the zoom thing fixed and I added the adjustable TPS value under the settings window. These will be in 1.0.5

I feel bad that I work on this and get enough changes to put out a new version every couple of days. I wish I had the server to put this on that I could add an auto update feature but since this is hosted on my actual machine at my house ... dont think Ill do that right now.

- Settings are now not saved on graph settings window close via the X
- Fixed a bug when renaming logs that caused a fatal error
- Added adjustable Auto Trim TPS value to the settings screen
- Added cancel zoom button to the quick action bar
- Load runs even if file is already open in another program (non-exclusive file access)
- Increased the sensitivity of smoothing

Im working on adding boost to the bottom graph but the scaling is being a little bit of a *****.

If you can think of anymore PLEASE let me know. Im running out of things to add for 5. If nothing else comes in Im going to start working on saving profiles of cars so you can default all to a set of saved profiles. Probably going to do a small release of 5 first and make that the big project for 6. What do you guys think?

(.net doesn't like you to assume that the value being converted to a number is an actual number)

2: Save as an image crashed it when I tried to save over one I just saved. aka replace existing.
(You need to close the handle to the file after it is saved)

I think they have both been fixed in 1.0.4

The TPS one for sure. The save one Ive never had a problem with but Ive also verified with another line of code, that that object is disposed of after it is written to disk.

Thanks for the bug reports. In the next few days when 1.0.5 comes out make sure to upgrade to the newest version so that you get all the fixes. 1.0.0.3 SUCKED!!! There were so many bugs in that one and the newer versions just look better too.

Well I wouldnt say you are doing anything wrong ... I had the TPS trimming set at 92% ... well ... the highest value Ive seen in a Cobb log so far is 87%. 1.0.5 addresses this issue by allowing you to set the trim value in the settings. In the mean time its ghetto but you CAN turn TPS trimming off and it should graph, or you can change your values at WOT to 95 for TPS. I know thats the wrong way to do it but Id hate to release 1.0.5 without the betas testing it first.

1.0.5 is in beta right now and there are some bugs to work out but it will be out soon.

Ive also made the graphing a little quicker and reduced the code footprint by 50 lines of code. In larger files it should be MUCH faster to graph. I am not only adding new features but trying to improve the old ones at the same time. Sorry if I introduce some bugs along the way but thats the price I pay for trying to continually improve this thing. Ill be working on it some on vacation starting Tuesday. I hope to get 1.0.5 out by then, so I can start on 1.0.6 with new features then.

Hmm. Well here is mine. It seems like it may be a bit higher than it should be >.> I dynod 303 on a Dyno Dynamics that indeed does read low. Most Stage 2 people are getting around 270's with tbe on that dyno. But nevertheless, 400? >.> I was expecting around 350.

Running at 27 psi - 22 psi to redline with Mods below.

Could this be because I turned off Auto trim TPS because of my sig. Does it not assume it's WOT with ap logs?

I also think the adjustment due to weight calculation must be quite off because I put in a log from last night with a few friends. I summed up our weight to like 420 pounds. And my HP went up by 50 (448 hp) in the graph. I didn't post it because it's just wayyyy too high. One last thing. I ran the log I just did (current mods again). With the same parameters but no weight (0 lbs in field) it is 383 which is still too high I think >.>

Turn the smoothing up, that will make the line and values look more realistic.

Brad, I have an idea for you.

I've been noticing that I need to up the smoothing if I have a lot of samples per second. I can easily do 35+ per second. If I have a log with a much lower number, say closer to 10 samples per second, I need much less smoothing.

So, here is the idea. Determine the number of samples per second and choose a smoothing rate based on that. I'm not sure how well that would work, but it seems like a dynamic smoothing may be a nice feature.

Golden: thats a great idea!!! I wonder if it will work. Ill play around with that. Ive also upped the smoothing 2x per level so it smooths more per level in 1.0.5, just got to get that thing out of beta. I sent the wrong link to my beta last night (it was 2am) so Ill get him to beta some today and give the thumbs up or down and we can go from there.

Happy Mint: turn your smoothing up. Its WAYYYY too choppy to be accurate. Smooth that joker out. Did you let off of it and then go WOT again in that run? Send me your data and tell me your parameters and Ill graph it for ya if you want.

Maybe you've done this already, but put the saved settings somewhere other than the CWD (current working directory). It puts them in my Logs folder. Saved settings should go in the program's folder.

An app to do what? Graph HP and TQ? I would but Id have to know how to communicate with the OP2 cable. If that is possible Id write a HP grapher that was live for it ... ewww .. wait Id have to get the developement kit for the iphone ... ugh.

Invest some money, and when you are done... The money will start flowing, use the PLX Kiwi-Wifi or the PLX Kiwi-Bluetooth, I'm sure there are other OBDII Devices you can use. But just think about this..."do you know how many people would buy your app with all the development you have so far plus knock!!!" I know I'll be one of them. if only I could do what you do... Oh man!!!

You might want to start doing versions like 1.0.5.4 so people know what version you are on. Just release major versions like 1.0.5 and only display that in the title and such. But when you right click the exe, you will see the full version. :)
Maybe even just make the last value a rolling build count. Those are always fun to see. (1.0.5.6430) :nerd:

BTW, I am a Sr. Software Engineer (12+ years now) and work in .net and such (from embedded software to .net high level end stuff). This is why I not only find the bugs, I typically know what is wrong with the code without seeing it.

TWO long days of coding finished. I wasted part of the day today trying to parallelize the code so it would be faster on multicore machines. I ran some tests afterwards and it just wasnt faster. So I ripped all that code out but I learned how to parallelize my code now. I am reworking the column name files so its structured a little different. This shouldnt delay me getting it to beta tomorrow sometime.

Golden after running some tests on my code and parallelizing it ... there were not any gains in speed. It was actually slower. I parallelized every combination of for loops in that function and to no benefit. I ran tests after each one and not any improvement in time. I even tried really big logs to see if the performance would be felt in larger data sets. NOPE. I was shocked.

I kept a separate copy of that function in its parallel glory and Im not giving up on it yet. Im just going to set it aside to get v5 out.

Just make sure that you aren't doing to much waiting for other threads. I've seen people parallelize code that waits so much that it should have just been a function call. If you want me to look over code sometime, you know how to reach me. :)

Worked on it last night and found a bug when using AEM logs. Not a major thing it just didnt hide the bottom graph when no data was there. Other than that I am just waiting on the betas to give me their thumbs up. I introduced a new way of smoothing and I have to get one of the betas to look it over and make sure it is working as planned.

Just an update. I packaged up V5 last night and about passed out at the keyboard. Just have to clean up the install and take screenshots for the website and post it. Its really close guys ... just bear with me ... my body said sleep and I said no ... but it won. Id expect in the next day or two it will be posted. Is anyone excited for the new changes?

Being able to average would be nice, especially when comparing 3-4 run logs before mods, with 3-4 after. There are a few changes I know Im going to make but I had to cut V5 development off if

Guys I found a MAJOR BUG in V5 and fixed it really fast. I republished V5 so if you want to uninstall it you can and get the new version, its out there. It was causing major spikes in logs where the RPM would drop for one cell in the run for no visible reason (TPS stayed at 100). It works now so if you have this problem get the new version.

That would be near impossible to do because all data samples wouldnt be at the same points. You could if you estimated the value on a line but ... is it really worth all that work? Seriously it would be enough Id probably start charging for the app at that point :(

Its already to the point Ive spent over a hundred hours on it (thats a VERY rough guess too). Id say thats probably a VERY low estimate in fact.

One thing I noticed is that it loads slower than 1.04. Also crashes if you click the pencil icon if no profile is created.

Then don't click on the pencil icon without a profile. Geez how many "if" statements does a programmer have to write?

You are very welcome. I am trying my best to help the community out. This IS and WILL ALWAYS be the best tool out there for graphing datalogs. I know I have competition but I feel like (and have been told by many) that Im crushing them. I will continue to make this my goal to be better, by leaps and bounds, than my competition.

VD has been working fine for me. Only thing that would be nice is if I could save my car's profile so i don't need to keep inputting the same info over and over again.

I've been having this problem for a while. The crutch fix i've been using is to open the CSV file and replace the 'time' heading with 'LogEntrySeconds'. The config option to rename the time column seems to be ignored and it only ever finds LogEntrySeconds

Clinicals are going good I guess, noone has died on me yet. We are in Acute Care so its a little more critically ill patients than Im used to, but this is the direction I want to go when I get out. Between clinical paperwork and quizzes and tests ... and Virtual Dyno ... its going to make me bald. :) Only 9 months left till I graduate ... cant freaking wait.

Then you have NCLEX to look forward too... Not. That was the hardest test I've ever taken. I was told it's even harder now since I took it 2 years ago.

My wife tells me that NCLEX isnt anything to worry about. She has her CCRN and is working on her doctorate in nurse anesthesia though.

And the work on 1.0.7 has begun ... one bug down ... its amazing how quick people find new bugs. :) Its ok its not a major one. I think its a never ending job and battle.

My wife tells me that NCLEX isnt anything to worry about. She has her CCRN and is working on her doctorate in nurse anesthesia though.

She already has her CRNA? IIRC the CRNA program is a Masters program. At least around here. I know because I am a RN and I am applying to the CRNA program. The NCLEX is not even the issue these days, I can't even get a internal transfer to a ICU from ER here in OH at the great Cleveland Clinic. It's a PITA to find a job even in the medical field.

Its on the list of things to do. I just have to cut off what I think the next version should have or Id never get the next one released. I plan on adding a 1/4 mile and 1/8 mile calculator that would tell you your estimated speeds based on power calculations. Is that close to what you are wanting? I have a way to calculate this and its pretty darn close. Just have to implement it.

Hey bbarnhill - just downloaded the virtual dyno to check it out. I'm using the cobb ap datalogs and I'm getting an E111 error when I attemp to load a log. Do I have to set something up if I'm using a cobb datalog?

its been reading cobb logs for a long time now. Where have you been? hahaha SEND AWAY!!! I support a number of loggers now. Some columns I havent seen before so if anyone runs into one ... PLEASE send me the log and let me know so I can further expand the list of columns. HHH (Hand Held Halo) is the only company that has sent me a complete list of column names.

Should be fixed now. I dont know what happened, but I did simplify the code behind that button when you click it. I just did away with it all and went old school on it. I dont know why I made it as complex as it was.

This is a great program. Thanks for creating it. But I have a couple of questions/suggestions.

1. How are you calculating frontal area? AFAIK, it is width X height x 90% (car and driver's formula). For example you list the FA for the Evo 10 at 22.9 square foot. But if you multiple the width (5.942 ft) and height (4.8583) of the car and then multiply the result by 90% you get 25.98 square foot.

2. Is there any way to activate the temp/baro functions w/o having to activate the SAE correction? Can you please do that in a future release if it is not in there?

Edit: I looked at the FA of the Evo 9 GSR and you have it listed at 24.9 sqft. This is very close to the 25.15 that I have extracted using the car and driver formula. The Evo X seems to be off.

Where did you find the numbers for the Evo X? Can you share the link? I searched for frontal area of cars and did not come up with much.

Temp/baro will have an impact on power even if you do not activate SAE correction. I do not want to compare to 77*/29.xxx SAE base. I just want to compare two runs to each other and see what impact the weather had on the power output.

you can change the temp and baro with SAE enabled.

I am having this problem with your program on Windows 7. Everytime I try to close the program or change the graphing options I get an error code. It never happened when I was running Windows XP on my old lap top. It does not happen on my tuning laptop that also runs XP. Attached is the gif of what it says. Is there a fix?

Ok, I fixed the problem. I installed the program outside of program files folder. I simply put it on the C drive. That took care of it. I would love to know if others with windows 7 are having this problem.

I would like to know what causes this problem ... it should give you proper permissions because it should give your account you install it under rights to write to that directory. I have redone the installer in 1.0.8 and use Nullsofts installer (NSIS) as the installs are smaller and its easier to build the executable everytime. Maybe it will fix this issue since I wont be using install shield anymore.

So if you keep the default installation location (C:/Program Files) you don't have permissions to certain folders? But if you install to the Root of C it gives you all the proper permissions? Only on Windows 7? Or Vista as well? XP?

XP does not have folder permissions. So it doesn't have this issue on XP. :nerd:

2000 and above uses NTFS the old File System was Fat32.

XP does allow for folder and file permissions. I need to find out if this problem is only on XP or if it happens on Vista and 7 too. I think it happened on 7 once too. I just dont know how to compare situations when this happens and find the underlying cause. It seems like I cant get enough feedback to get to the root of the issue. I could patch and patch all day long but if we fix the underlying issue which is more than likely a user account issue on the clients machine, but Im staying open minded about it.

Please know that I have redone the installer in NSIS (nullsofts installer system) in the next edition. I have gotten away from install shield for now because it does have some problems from time to time in visual studio. Also the installer is 1/3 the size after NSIS compression.

I have been focused on moving the project to a new webserver in the last week and that move has been made. It should have better bandwidth and if my power at the house goes out the server is still up and running. I hope this helps availability to you all. Yes, but a base install of XP has wide open privileges. It's a windows 7 thing to lock every thing down. (for the better good)

I will load a copy on Xp, Vista and 7 and see what I get. Do you want 32 vs 64bit? New version vs old version? Might take some time but I will try if you want.

It is a windows 7 issue. My tuning laptop runs XP and I had no problem installing and running VD in program files. My new Dell XPS has windows 7. When I installed VD in program files (x86), I had this problem. The problem was solved when I installed VD on the C drive only. It seems that the windows 7 prgram files folder has some sort of protection on it.

It may be setting the permissions to "Program Files" not Program Files x86. If you manually grant the necessary permissions will it work?

I have installed it on several windows 7 machines without an issue. Vista has the same 'lockdown' issues that windows 7 has, so I think there is more to this. There has to be some user account issue going on I think.

Well... try it with and without UAC enabled and see if you have a difference.

Ok after a bit of testing:

UAC off initially: installed and no errors when writing xml files
UAC turned on: installed and errors when writing xml files
UAC turned off w/ different install system (NSIS): no errors

So now Im attributing the problem to installshield and windows 7. I have already gotten a new installer built in NSIS for 1.0.8 and it looks like this may force a release of 1.0.8 very very soon. I need to get it tested as there havent been many changes other than the installer so far but a few were made.

Well if I can help out with anything let me know. I can't run logs because my clutch is swiss cheese at the moment. lol

Yep I'm running W7 64 and for a few releases now have had to set installation folder permissions after a fresh install of VD.

Because with the math it should should be 1.00 but after comparing SEVERAL dynojet plots it averaged that 1.09 is what matched most of them. Its been pretty reliable on most of them.

Iinterestingly, using CF=1.0 the numbers are EXACTLY what i got on my local DD dyno. like to the kilowatt :)
I literally went on the dyno, got tuned, and then did a VD run on the road outside on the way home. 270.8 on dyno, 271 on VD.
I have a mate who used the same dyno and we did a VD run in his car the next day and it was within 3kw.
So props to whoever did the math!!

(and any Aussie guys reading this, using CF=1.0 will get you darn close to "real world" results on most of our tried & tested dynos down here )

Isn't the dynojet correction factor a function of the weather stationfor the dyno? If that is the case, then how can we have a 1.09 correction factor? Is it possible to add a weather station to your software like DLL has? This way you would not need a correction factor? or would you?

nope. Its a function of them just not matching actual mathmatical calculations. Weather correction is partially implemented in VD at this time. I should add air humidity as a parameter too actually but Im so frustrated with weather correction Im on the border of ripping it out. Its useless. It basically changes your HP/TQ readings to match what they could be in ideal conditions ... phffft thats stupid and useless.

brad - do me a favour :) and either add multiple run detection, or just graph the longest run in the log..

a lot of the time I hit WOT for a few seconds, and it would be nice to exclude these parts...

Basically you could have an edit screen that has the TPS graphed for the whole log. We drag a left bar to the right, which moves a vertical line and cuts off entries at the beginning of the log. Same thing for the right side, we drag a bar left and it chops off entries at the end of the log. A human can quickly and easily determine which TPS "bump" they want the dyno chart to be displayed for.

That is exactly how EcuPlus did it and it worked great.

I think it would be easier to just list the WOT sections (in a dropdown) and the user selects which one he wants...

it should be fairly trivial to work it out - assuming you are logging TPS... which I thought was mandatory anyways..

its not mandatory but I wouldnt log without it. It makes this program so much easier to use since it does autotrimming now.

Im going to have to think about how to deal with this multiple runs per file issue.

yeh if you solve/do multiple runs per file then you also solve the WOTBUTNOTRUN issue as well :)

Im just wondering if there is a Dyno out there that doesnt make you create seperate run files and just lets you make run after run then it breaks them apart. If anyone knows of one let me know.

So I am having an issue importing files. I just installed the program for the first time and am trying to use it. I import a file, and can select the car just fine. However when I choose 3rd or 4th gear it throws this error:

E111: column " does not belong to table stage 2 93 lwg.csv

Stage 2 93 lwg.csv is the name of the file I tried to import. The log came from a Cobb AP running the latest firmware.

Am I doing something wrong?

So it looks like the "Time" column has some funky characters in it, which is why it was choking. I removed the characters and now it imports. What's weird is that I don't see these characters in Excel, only in OpenOffice Calc. Any way your program can ignore those characters?

is it the time like "0.150.56" I think that is something that needs to be addressed on the logging side. I cant handle all their problems :) What logger are you using again? Im sure the author would be MORE than willing to figure out why thats happening. They need to know about bugs in their programs as well.

Please dont take offense to this ... its just that if we dont fix the actual problem then it will always exist. I have learned to do RCA (root cause analysis) and attack the root of the problem if possible.

Looks like a Cobb log to me. Contact them and ask them why timestamps are being stacked on top of each other.

As I said it's actually the column heading "time" that is causing the issue. There are some hidden characters that appear in certain editing programs. I removed them from the "Time" heading and now it works.
