HOW TO: Firewall Access

Parts Required
- Whatever your trying to run through the firewall.

Tools Required
- Long Phillips (+) Screwdriver. Not too thin.

Recommended Number of People
- You can do this yourself.

Difficulty
- 3 - It's a pain if your not used to working in tight spaces.

Time to complete
- 30 seconds

Step by Step Instructions
1 - Locate the main rubber grommet in the engine bay. It has a big fin on in. Don't be fooled. It's impossible to pull it out without unwrapping it from the wires.

2 - Now poke a hole through the grommet on the left side just above the little tab that appears to split it in half. Go nice and slow, while turning the screwdriver, so that you don't snag any wires and don't cut into anything.

Firewall - Cabin Side - It completely misses the wires, since the wires come in and cut to the left, and we made a hole on the right, there is actually enough room to pass a vaccum line or sensor wires or what have you.

It may be hard to see, but there is a Thick White Wire in that harness. I have the screwdriver coming out well below it. Its silver, so look again and you will see it.

If you need it bigger, you can cut a bigger hole with a razor or if you want just cut the tape off from the wires and try to slide it down. I went with the easier approach. Just keep in mind that there are very fragile, thin, important wires there. Don't go to fast, and use a phillips.

Here are some other ways I tried to get through.

Over the wheel well lining. Maybe there is access to the cabin through here and behind the drivers’ side kick panel. No idea.

This little grommet, I have heard, goes to the back rear of the glove box. I haven't fully explored this option either. It just seems like an unnecessarily long run for something like a boost gauge.

Awesome! I had heard people say that there wasn't any access through the firewall to the inside of the car because of the ecu being in the engine bay now, but I knew that it was just a matter of time until a good spot was found that didn't require drilling. Where is that spot on the inside of the car? Driver's side above the pedals, I'm guessing? Thanks for the great find man!

Ye, towards the center firewall. You will see all of these wires coming out. The main parts of the harness, like an inch in diamater, hugs the hole and goes to the left. It was just a matter of figuring out the safest way to get past them without messing anything up.

There is a blank grommet behind the glove compartment, but its buried under a ton of sound proofing.

ye, thats the one all the way to the left of the firewall looking from outside. Thats the one i pictured up top, and didn't even bother. I have the SSS, so I know I have extra sound deadening layers.

Awesome. PDX, time to make a PDF! :)

Thanks again, EvoX-LI! This will come in handy to anyone trying to install gauges!
