A tipped cargo shipped at port in Jersey City caused serious damage for over 370 [URL="http://www.egmcartech.com/2008/01/14/e92-bmw-m3s-1-series-and-others-destroyed-in-tipped-cargo-ship/#"]BMW (http://www.egmcartech.com/category/car-news/) North America cars. 70 of which were completely written off. Unfortunately. a majority were apparently E92 M3s. There were some 1-series, 3-series and others among the carnage.
The cars that weren’t totaled will be repaired at the BMW Elizabeth Receiving facility and will be sold as new. Others will be sent to the crusher. The shipping company’s insurance company will allegedly be paying the tab. If you have an M3 (http://www.egmcartech.com/2008/01/14/e92-bmw-m3s-1-series-and-others-destroyed-in-tipped-cargo-ship/#) on order, you might want to look into whether your car was totalled.

If I was waiting for a 1 series I would seriously look at waiting for a few months and making sure that the car I buy is new production. I wouldn't want one of these 'repaired' cars. Better yet, arrange for European delivery!

Im not sure there will be any way to track which cars were hit. This happened to Mazda last year, and due to the liabilities of something going wrong, the crushed all of the cars. Mazda felt there was no way to prove that a car would operate to safety specifications after being tipped on its side. Rather then take the risk with their drivers lives, they totaled all the cars. Guess BMW feels a little more arrogant. Guess that fits well with the BMW crowd :p
