This guy just didn't get how to drive an automatic or better yet semi automatic car....if you have a problem with the gear it chooses choose it yourself...their problem solved your in the right gear and your more involved...this guy is a moron plain and simple hes just finding a reason that isnt there to hate on Semi autos.

The fact that this guy is just now finding out that a 5-speed manual is going to be made available should make it completely apparent that he has absolutely no idea what he's talking about. He either wrote that article a year ago with a prototype SST or he knows less about the X than every single person on any car forum and blog on the Internet.

I can see how someone may enjoy a manual, but DCTs are coming and they are great. Real drivers (not just pretentious idiots) are baffled by their efficacy. I'm sure there were a ton of purists out there that pissed and moaned when they introduced synchros to manual transmissions claiming that "real men double clutch".

I honestly feel sorry for people who will never get on board with the DCT's because it's inevitable. Just look at the GT-R. People utterly marvel at this thing and it only comes with flappy paddles.

I hated when they got rid of the original giant Xbox controllers because I don't have small child-like hands. I had to search for them on eBay and deal with terrible scores when I played at friends houses with "normal" controllers. Sadly, I was in the minority and I lost out.

Sorry manual fans, you're losing. You'll always be able to search the classifieds and find old cars with the three pedals, but as time goes on you'll find fewer and fewer of the cars you want to buy available with a manual transmission. It may be a slow gradual decline, but it is, most assuredly, coming.

Yup, MT will be going the way of roll-your-own cigarettes fairly shortly.

I would have gotten a DSG transmission if it came in GSR trim. Left foot braking is ftw!

I don't know if I agree on that one. Simply because almost every car driven in europe and other countries is manual. There will also be a car enthusiast market wanting the manual and there will always be the "dirt cheap" car market selling manual trans.

Those cars have traditionally been MT b/c of gas mileage/fuel costs. As ATs have become more efficient, I think fewer and fewer people are opting for MT. And once the auto-manual (twin-clutch or not) is ready for industry-wide rollout, it's probably going to be adios, au revoir, auf Wiedersehen, etc., to the MT. Well, maybe the Indian and Chinese car companies will keep MT on their cheapest cars.

UnctrldRage: Here at I work....LOL but I don't believe true automatic trannies will ever be as efficent as manual transmission due to the fact that they weigh to much for normal shifting time to make a difference that being said Twin Clutch trannys which are just computer controlled MANUALS to begin with..will be and continue to get more efficeint as technology for them improves.

he didnt necessarily say that SSTs and DSGs are pointless and wrong... so much as a statement that I agree with 100%

can we establish once and for all that DSG/Speedshift/SST gearboxes – twin-clutchers – are not as rewarding to use as a stick?

I would agree with that. The reason I seem to be such a "purist" is not because I dont believe the technology is good, or better than a manual, but simply because I have more fun driving a manual transmission.

I dont mind SMGs, etc. in certain cars - as they can ADD to the experience, but I dont think they're right for every car.

I'm pretty sure when he said "ATs will be more efficient" he's referring to the dual-clutch style automatics.

I know there's this huge linguistics debate about whether they should be called automatics or manuals, but in my mind they are automatics. They are automatically shifting for you regardless of the components. If they were called "clutchity transmissions" and "torquity convertory transmissions" then we could call these DSG/SST transmissions by the "clutchity transmissions" moniker.

I think for everyone's sake we need to just adopt a terminology like "automated clutch transmissions" or "dual clutch transmissions" (DCT) to avoid confusion.

i agree, the popular belief among the more "knowledgeable" population is that an automatic entails a torque converter.

its all terminology, but if you get down to semantics, automatic means the process is completed with little or no human control. i think maybe we should refer to the trannys as what they really are. conventional auto, conventional manual, cvt, dsg, smg AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Here, here. After driving TSS or DSg I'll never drive stickshift again. Why would you?

over here most cars 98% are sold MT and as such anyone buying AT is not normal (hence purist real drivers prefer the MT) i personally love the SST but can also understand why some would prefer the MT...the launch aspect alone...not sure how many standing start 1/4miles the SST will take before going to dinner on its own internals. Over here its strictly no modding of SST cars or warranty is gone.!
