: lates on evo x jdm.
ak47m203 08-20-2007, 07:01 AM can someone read japanese, why the hp is only 280(someone is gonna be pissed) but the torque is higher than evo ix, can someone convert that torque in english. there are some numbers on 1/4 mile and o to 60.

linkinparkemon 08-20-2007, 09:27 AM well if that 43 is the torque in kg-m, then that would convert to 311 lb-ft of torque... but i don't know about that 280hp stuff... when it compares the evo ix in the 4th column, it says its equal between the ix and x @ 280... but we all know the evo ix in america was 286hp... so i don't know about that..
Kooldino 08-20-2007, 01:44 PM The most expensive model listed has "375 000" Written next to it in the list on page 2. Assuming, that refers to Japanese yen, 375 000 = 3 307.875 U.S. dollars. Obviously it won't cost $3300. Maybe we can move the decimal point one place to the right?
Looks like the same HP as the Evo 9 MR (did we even get an MR IX here?), but more torque.
Wow, this thing makes an good torque and makes it early...translates into 253.8 ft/lbs of torque at 3500rpm!!!
I'm suspecting that they're playing down the HP number due to that old gentleman's agreement or something.
Kansei 08-20-2007, 03:12 PM They don't do street cars with more than 276HP in Japan, hence the 280 rating (that's not HP, it's PS.. 280PS = 276HP).
That's not to say that the car doesn't make a lot more power than that, but yeah Dana you're right, it's j ust that gentleman's agreement crap
edit:
The background of the 280 limit
The 280 limit came in effect in 1990 responding to increasing number of traffic accidents associated with high output cars. Also, the gentleman's agreement was there to avoid unneccesary unlimited power race between Japanese manufactures. 1990 was around the year when R32 GTR, 80 Supra, FD3S, NSX came out.
The reason of the termination
Being that the imported cars are not restricted, there were vehicles on road that were sold with more horsepower, recently 400 horsepower is not a surprise anymore looking at Porsches and AMGs. Also Japanese cars are sold more than 280hp elsewhere on the world. For instance, Lexus LS, Infinity Q45.
Considering the inefficiency of manufacturing vehicles in double standards, JAIA concluded that the gentleman's agreement is nonsense.
Another story is that there was opinion that the 280 limit is actually restricting the manufactures development. While foreign manufactures builds vehicles around their high performance output, Japanese cars were designed around the 280 package. The opinion was that development of chassis, brakes, suspensions, and all the other components were suffered from 280 limit.
Now, manufactures are freed to develop vehicles competing with rivalries overseas.
but from what I've read, that agreement came to an end.. three years ago?
http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20040611-00000017-san-bus_all <-- link is dead now, not to mention the fact that it's in japanese. but the article that should go to talked about the end of the gentleman's agreement, citing that new cars are getting so heavy that they need more power to compete with cars from Germany and the like
Kooldino 08-20-2007, 04:09 PM Yeah, I heard it died too, but it sounds like it's still around to a degree, possibly to ease people's minds.
Kansei 08-20-2007, 04:21 PM I bet it's for insurance purposes since the original law was because of increased accident risk.
Parnelli 08-20-2007, 06:24 PM I can't quite make out the figures in the power and torque curves but the power curve seems to suspiciously "flatten out" before getting to the 6500 rpm "peak"
If the motor is making 255 lb/feet of torque at 6500 rpm it should be making about 315 bhp; that's a simple mathematical formula; if you know any engine's torque output at a given RPM you can calculate the horsepower at that point. you can find calculators for it all over the web.
In other words, if it's torquier than the IX, then it's also more powerful at the same revs...

Haha, good observation.

HP = (torque x RPM) / 5252
In other words, if it's torquier than the IX, then it's also more powerful at the same revs...
Agreed.
EndgamE 08-20-2007, 08:56 PM Maybe those are fake numbers to through off Subaru. Since everytime the released the HP & torque numbers Subby would just one up them. Subaru even went so far to release fake numbers about 2-3 yrs ago just to hear what Mitsu numbers where... Just a possibility
Kooldino 08-20-2007, 09:03 PM ^Where did you hear about Suby faking some numbers?
EndgamE 08-20-2007, 09:08 PM At one of the car shows I think It was awhile ago and at first I thought i was remembering it wrong or something but a friend of mine who works at my unit remembers it too and has a 2001 STi. I could be completely off base but I know there was a car show where Mitsu announced it's numbers and Subby was like o yeah well we got this... that was back when the Evo VIII was released.
Kooldino 08-20-2007, 09:21 PM 2001 STi? Which country?
LOL @ Mitsu vs Suby. Thank God for competition.
EndgamE 08-20-2007, 11:20 PM it's from the US I could be off on the yr though it's one of the first ones.
Kooldino 08-20-2007, 11:52 PM I don't think we had STis in the US until 2004.
Kansei 08-21-2007, 12:33 AM correct
EndgamE 08-21-2007, 02:41 AM well I dunno about that but he has one and he had it for awhile I can ask him tomorrow.
