I bought a Nikon D100 and all the accessories when it first came out. D100 body was like $2999, lenses around 3k, and a 1GB Sandisk Compact flash card $1000. I never use the camera much now, to hard to carry around and all. I mean I love the photos and I love to take some photos of nature and landscapes but no way will I take it on vacation. I used to carry it all over the world and I finally said enough was enough. I guess what I am saying is make sure you are REALLY into it before committing.

I got a Nikon D60, does a good job with everything.

But, a good compact point and shoot is always a must these days.

The 7000 should be a pretty nice camera... what are you going to use it for?

I just got a Canon T2i with 18-55 and 70 -300 kit at costco. I'm a beginner as well. Initial impressions are good. One thing I've noticed is that I've got to let go of the "point-n-shoot" way of taking photos. The more I rely on manual focus and manual zoom, the better my pictures seem to be.

Of course, I've only dealt with a DSLR for 2 days now, so there's a lot for me to learn. I don't know enough about it to form an opinion.

As for the decision on the D7000, its a no-brainer really, all entry level DSLRs from Canon and Nikon are pretty good. Just don't pay attention to Megapixels.

Also look into purchasing from Costco if possible. using the Costco Amex card, I got a total of 3 year warranty plus a bag plus a 4GB mem car and an HDMI cable to output directly from my camera to a TV. Even with the added cost of Tax compared to an online purchase, I find this a VERY attractive deal.

I just bought my D7000, have about 1800 pics on it. I love it. ISO 6400 looks better than ISO 1600 on my old Canon 1000d. It's a big change from my canon, so I'm still learning all it's features. I seriously doubt you will regret getting the D7000. There is a reason it's sold out everywhere :)

What is this comparable to on the Canon side? 50D?

What do you plan on using the camera for? I have a 50D, which is right around the same price as this D7000. I use it a lot though, and I make money with it. Most of my friends have the Rebel, which is the cheaper model.

MUCH closer to the 7D. Hard to believe I know, but go look up the specs and it's performance. It's only really limited by it's buffer, 6fps for 31 snaps in Jpg fine. 100 in Jpg normal. Oh limited in video slightly as well, as there is no 30fps mode, only 23.xx.

I have heard nothing but good things about the D7000's ISO performance. A good friend of mine is planning on picking one up soon... I am going to wait until some more new models come out and run my D5000 into the ground.

The Canon vs Nikon argument is really a wash for many. Just choose one and stick to it.

Fish, it looks like the D7000 is equivalent to the Canon 550D (Also called T2i).

Nope..

D7000 = 6fps and 39point 3d AF tracking.
