: Slight shudder while letting out clutch
DocWalt 11-22-2010, 09:41 PM So, I managed to roast my clutch on the way home from class the other day in traffic, it stunk for days and now I have a slight shudder when I'm letting out the clutch. :duh: Doesn't seem too bad if I'm letting the clutch out at low revs, like in traffic. It's much worse if I rev to like 2k and let the clutch out. It doesn't slip throwing it in 5th and flooring it @30mph.
Does it sound like the clutch will eventually just go back to normal or is it done? Should I just wait for it to go? I do have another car to drive, but still, I wasn't budgeting a clutch already. It's not like I was out launching it or anything, sheesh.
To test if your clutch is gonna die, go WOT (if you think its not that severe) at 4th and see if the rpm needle moves up without corresponding 'feeling' of acceleration.
DocWalt 11-22-2010, 11:35 PM It doesn't, as I stated above. I'm not worried about it dieing now, just worried that the shudder is an indication of a severely hot spotted flywheel, which leads to a massively reduced clutch lifespan.
Zigma 11-23-2010, 05:04 PM Before mine went out, I had a 500-750 rpm 'slip' before it would engage. I mean, if you just burned it now, I would not worry about it but if you continue to drive like that, then I hope you got cash saved up as you’ll be needing to replace it soon.
DocWalt 11-23-2010, 08:04 PM I've got no abnormal slip that I'm noticing, just the judder. I can feel it in the clutch pedal, which leads me to believe that it's a "warped" clutch.
DocWalt 11-24-2010, 02:42 AM Got the slight judder on the way to work, drove home and it was fine. Drove to a meet tonight, and it was fine on the way there and the way home. Popped the hood when I got home and smelled a burnt smell (hot engine smell) with a teensy whiff of clutch smell (somewhat normal, have to turn around in my driveway and it's always smelled a bit since day 1). I wish I knew if it was f'ed up or not :/
fractur3 11-24-2010, 03:16 AM I launched my car for the first time the other day, and I wouldn't consider myself a "pro" driver but I know how to launch an AWD car, and I smelt clutch for 2 days. And now some times at 1k I feel the same stutter. Feels like I warped something in there, kinda feels like a warped rotor if that makes sense. Oh well fuck it, santa's bringing me a new clutch anyway :)
DocWalt 11-24-2010, 03:28 AM I didn't even get to launch it :( I wish santa was bringing me a new clutch, haha. WHen you get her out, lemme know how bad it is.
Eyler_Evo_X 11-24-2010, 03:50 AM I'll tell you that the OEM flywheel and the OEM clutch burn easily. When my original clutch went out I'd never even launched the car and there were two really nice burns in it. I have no idea how they got there because I'd never really pushed the car until after that.
DocWalt 11-24-2010, 12:15 PM If the flywheel is hot-spotted, is it even worth getting it cut and using it with a new clutch?
If it gets any worse over the next few weeks, I'm gonna bitch to the dealer, I only have 1800-ish miles :(
edit: Oh, and on the way to work, it was barely noticeable again, like last night. I think I have another issue as well though, gonna check my plugs tonight, feels like it's running poorly, maybe another bad tank of gas... or the shit-tastic stock tune. I was asked if I was catless it throws that much smoke, lol.
DocWalt 11-25-2010, 01:32 AM Getting some random serious bucking while cruising on the highway totally at random. Not perfectly smooth at WOT either... Might just take it to the dealer next week if it stays this way. wtf :(
edit: swapped my black FP relay with the horn, doesn't seem better, but it seems to pull perfectly fine, besides some very slight bumps. The plugs were the best looking plugs I've ever seen (they better be with 2k on them, haha) so idk... I'm gonna chalk it up to the stock tune. I want a tune, but I also want to keep my warranty if the clutch dies...
DocWalt 11-30-2010, 01:43 AM So... an update. The clutch feels smooth again unless I purposely slip it at 2k-ish Doesn't seem to do it at around 3k :/ I still have no idea if I hotspotted it or what. Bleh.
tehSteve 12-11-2010, 08:01 AM that judder... are you sure it is the clutch and not the car?
like you can slip the clutch at bite or whatever for 2 seconds... but when you are releasing it... is possible you are releasing too fast or just not adding enough gas? When I learned stick this was a problem that plagued me. Because I was sitting on a slight incline and was able to catch myself with a little gas and clutch action, I thought I was able to move forward no problem. Wrong... not enough gas and it shuddered like hell. Now it is all one gentle maneuver of applying more and more gas pressure in one smooth motion while manipulating the clutch. just my 2 cents.
DocWalt 12-11-2010, 08:17 AM I've been driving stick for years, but I sometimes get in a "funk" where I have trouble making it smooth. I think I was having a little bit of that, and an overheated disc burning itself clean. Nobody I know was willing to drive my car to confirm that it was the clutch. :(
I actually have put this in the back of my mind, it's been pretty much buttery smooth as of late. Now I get judder from the Advans in 20 degree temps until they warm up. Sweet! :D
