: Gearbox Magazine interview

Hey guys, I would like to take this time to introduce myself. My name is Ryan Gates and I race an Evo X. Haha I know I've been MIA for the past few months, but it's been a shit show...

Basically, I'd like to say what's up and get back into the swing of things. 2010 is almost over, thank god, but there are still a few more things I need to post up before years end. One of them being a 'Brake Thread', which is almost done. I got the pictures back from Girodisc so all that's left is to resize those and get the rest of the text in...it's going to be everything from a review to a guide based on my experience over the past three seasons. Look for that in a few days.

One other thing I'd like to post up is an interview I recently did for Gearbox Magazine. It's a cool site that's just getting up and running, check it out if you have a sec. The interview goes thru a bunch of stuff, but overall it gives you a look into how all of this came about and where things are going.

Have a look here - http://mitsubishi.gearboxmagazine.com/2010/12/follow-your-dreams-to-the-max-like-ryan-gates/

Also, I have a few vids from SEMA and Super Lap Battle that are almost done, I'll post up about those when they're ready. The Evo is at AMS right now getting repaired after a timing chain/tensioner failure at Super Lap...headwork, valves, pistons, etc. Super bummed, but that's how my 2010 went. Project Sportback is coming together real nice...my suspension is off to JRZ as we speak! Updates on both cars later this week. Anything new goin on that I missed???

Ryan, what pistons are you moving to? Still running the 2.2L, right? I heard about AMS experimenting with a 2.3L big bore. Going for 10.5:1 compression or something else? I'm thinking of going with an AMS 2.2L short block late next year. Hearing some lessons from someone who's been there/done that would be great :)

Yeah, I was just going to post that the SST is almost 3 years old and still zero support from Mitsu. Rumor has it that their contract with getrag has expired, yet there's still no replacable parts. Fellow Canadian member's SST is entering lawsuit battles so it would seem :(

Ryan,

did you get the BBX lite tuned on your RA?

I talked to Bryan about the JRZ setup on the RA... we have a 2011, which we are testing stock housing turbos for.. so guys dont have to switch to the EVO X stuff..

let me know man!

need a radiator for that thing? put the evo X rad in it, and ill send you our double pass evo X radiator ;)

Sounds like 2010 was a wild ride, nice article over at Gearbox magazine! BTW when you say you are doing more fun things in 2011, would you still consider One Lap being fun? There seems to be at least five Evo X's attending this spring, the only issue I see is reliability in that you would have to likely dial the power down a few notches to keep the car in on piece. :innocent:

Redline time attack appears to be only doing west coast tracks all of next year which makes it a long haul for east coast people. We'll see how many events I'm able to make with the Kids with Cancer Evo X, all depends on what budget is set and how many events the owner wants to drive. :)

Hope all goes well for you next season!

I'm not moving to any new pistons, they just need to be replaced after the timing chain/tensioner failure. I'll be running the same high compression 10.5:1 JE pistons. You'll love this engine if you go for it...believe me we've done enough testing to figure out what works and what doesn't haha.

It's not tuned yet, but it's installed! The next installment in Modified Magazine goes into a bit more detail of what's goin on. I can't to have some JRZ's on here...I've been spoiled with the Evo for sure. I'll let you know about that rad ;)

Yea dude 2010 was rough...just so many things went wrong. Even so, it was pretty fun and we learned alot! I know now that doing this on your own isn't as easy as I expected, the car issues didn't help but even still. One lap is cool...I'd love to run it. Best of luck with your program too dude, thanks!

Thanks...check this looonnng thread - http://www.evoxforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25640

Damn...sorry to hear. 2010 has been rough on a few people I see. Keep your head up dude, luckily there's usually a fix to all problems!

Thanks for the good words guys! Check out my facebook page in the next few days...I'll be giving out some K&N intakes, filters, gear, etc to a few lucky folks.

That was a great article with Gearbox Mag! One piece that caught me was the warm up session of the Super Lap Battle. When I saw that, my eyes popped and I said to myself "That's exactly what happened to me one day!!!" Haha!! I was a lucky though. It could have been really bad as my X just turned off while I was in a turn coming off the highway. Luckily I was only going about 15-20mph and was able to roll it into a parking lot to check things out. I didn't visibally see anything wrong and once I got back in the car, it started up fine. Did you ever contact Mitsubishi about that?

Also, looking forward to your input on the Brake Thread! I have a set up front that are so loud that it's embarrasing at times!:theeye: Me and another forum member "bradze" had removed them, cleaned them, and applied "Brake Quiet" on the metal backings. It's still loud as crap! I think I'll just get new pads. Anyways, good luck with the 2011 season man!

My issues was the timing chain coming off the gears, not something I can really blame Mitsu for. Yours sounds like it was just a freak hiccup or somethin? I think I have a fix for your loud pads, look for that in the brake thread :)
